24.01.2022 Have you been to the Gympie Regional Gallery lately? Now is a great time to visit as two outstanding exhibitions, 'Wonamutta Burra' and 'Wild/flower Women III: Women Walking Country' are currently on display. 'Wonamutta Burra' celebrates the cultural life of the Butchulla nation spanning from Rainbow Beach, K’gari (Fraser Island) north to Piabla in Hervey Bay.... The exhibition showcases the cultural knowledge and stories brought to life through a range of artistic mediums including, acrylic on canvas, ceramics, patchwork (of recycled berlin canvas, recycled tapestry wool, screen print, hand dyed cotton fabric), limited edition photographic prints & timber sculpture. The project has been supported by Gympie Regions Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Gympie Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. 'Wild/flower Women III: Women Walking Country' is another exhibition on display which celebrates the work of Kathleen McArthur, who was an artist and conservationist who specialised in painting Queensland wildflowers. She is also well-known for being one of the founding members of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland. To profile the living legacy of women, art and Queensland wildflowers, contemporary artists from Gympie, Noosa and Sunshine Coast created new work ranging from paintings, prints, works on paper, and jewellery to textile works using natural dyes, recycled textiles, and wall vinyl. The Wild/flower Women III exhibition is supported by Cooloola Coastcare and the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Gympie Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. Entry to the Gympie Regional Gallery at 39 Nash Street is free, with opening hours from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday. For more information, or to make bookings for workshops and themed activities, visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/gallery or call 5481 0733.

Council crews will be on the ground to commence the clean up as soon as they can. Its a timely reminder, if its flooded, forget it. More information on severe weather preparedness can be found at, www.getready.qld.gov.au

22.01.2022 All over our region Magpie parents are busily tending to their growing families. Did you know that in most cases the babies are unable to fly when they first leave the nest? They will flutter around for a week or so, while Mum and Dad keep an eye out, continue to feed them and encourage them to fly. Overnight the baby Magpies will find a safe place in undergrowth to take shelter. Unless the babies are in danger due to a roaming pet or don't seem to be attended to by their p...arents, there is no need to intervene. If you are concerned about a Magpie in distress, please call the RSPCA hotline 1300 ANIMAL and they will be able to offer further advice or assistance.

20.01.2022 The trees on Mary Street are beautiful but for some of them, it's time for a prune. Council has a responsibility to make sure the trees are maintained to an appropriate safety standard. The works involve pruning and canopy reduction which helps shape the trees by reducing the height and increasing the spread, the trees will provide more shade and be safer. Some of the trees will be removed if they’ve expired or pose a safety risk. These will be replaced with new trees in the near future. This work is planned to commence in early December and will be finished off early next year weather permitting.

20.01.2022 A Message from the Mayor COVID19 and the social distancing restrictions imposed on our nation have impacted so many facets of our lives, especially our ability to gather as a community. There were so many events which are institutions in our region, and have been for many years, that were cancelled during 2020 as a result of COVID19, including the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival, Gympie Show, and Gympie Music Muster.... Community organisations such as the Gympie Show Society were unable to hold their major annual event which put an enormous financial strain on the organisation and is something the show society hasn’t had to face since World War II. Some of these organisations are preparing to make a resurgence in 2021 with the Gympie Show and Goomeri Pumpkin Festival returning to their regular spot on the calendar in May. The Gympie Turf Club are also preparing for their first race meet of the year in March. These events have always been wellattended by those looking for a fun day out with family and friends. While I am on the subject of community events, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody involved in the Australia Day celebrations that took place at the Pavilion last week. Council staff worked tirelessly preparing and executing a fantastic event that was attended by so many locals who enjoyed a great day of live music, food and family entertainment. These events will continue to be important for our community as we continue to deal with the devastating effects of COVID19. These community organisations will need your support as they begin the process of rebuilding, so get your family and friends together and support them where possible. Mayor Glen Hartwig

19.01.2022 Meet Claude 'The Mowerman' Harvey. Claude is spending his retirement raising money for Bravehearts, Australia's leading child protection organisation, by pushing his lawn mower around Australia. Claude has raised over $1.2 Million over the past 13 years, and all of the generous donations received will help Bravehearts to continue their counselling and education services, which are imperative to families across Australia.... Claude is part way through his mow-a-thon from Caloundra to Bundaberg, which started earlier this month, and he will be in the Gympie region until Tuesday, 27 October. During his stop over, Claude is meeting with community leaders, visiting shopping centres and chatting with locals that cross his path, inspiring donations from those with a few dollars to spare and spreading his message of the importance of child protection in Queensland communities. If you see Claude during your travels, stop and say g'day and if you can, donate to this amazing cause. 18.01.2022 A Message from Cr Jess Milne Christmas means something different to everyone, but you know it’s here when the tinsel goes up, the baubles come out and the jingle of bells rings through carols. The spirit of giving boosts the economy, and on another hand, allows those less fortunate have a moment of joy. No matter how you are going to be celebrating, reflecting or serving this Christmas, stay safe and take the time over the festive season to recharge after a roller-coaster yea...r. While the Christmas season can bring a lot of happiness, it also makes waste. Paper, cards, bottles, cans, clean aluminium foil dishes (crushed into a ball), cardboard, old fairy lights, other electronics and soft plastics can be recycled through designated programs, while mindful food service will result in plenty of safe leftovers to eat or freeze. For all those unwanted gifts, consider re-gifting them to a charity or a not-for-profit fundraiser. Our region is a destination that has it all, from country charm to historic connection and coastal bliss. Support the local tourism industry by giving visitors a warm welcome; a simple smile can make the difference between a good and great experience! I see resolutions as a mindset for positive change. I used to ask myself Where do I want to be in ten years’ time? to set my goals for personal growth. While I know that my journey is ongoing, I always try to learn something new every day. Today it was that Scotland’s national animal is a unicorn. The things you learn while girls go through the unicorn stage of childhood! Are you going to make a New Year’s resolution? Whether it be for personal improvement, community betterment or just one simple change, don’t forget to be mindful on your journey as you’re always making memories. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Cr Jess Milne

17.01.2022 Whether you like it or not, flying foxes are loving the Gympie region right now. We are reminding all residents to stay safe and not touch injured or deceased flying foxes. Flying foxes are potential carriers of the Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV) and if they scratch or bite a person, they could infect them with the virus. While actual human cases are low there have only been three cases in Australia in the last 24 years it’s important to be cautious as it can be deadl...y. Queensland Health advises that if you (or your child) come across a bat: Do not touch the bat , even if it seems to be dead. If the bat seems sick, injured or stuck, contact a wildlife rescue organisation such as ANARRA, which has vaccinated, trained bat carers or the RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625). If you or someone you know has been bitten or scratched by a bat, or bat saliva has entered your eye, nose or mouth: Wash the affected area gently and thoroughly with soap and water for at least five minutes Apply an antiseptic (alcohol-based or iodine-based) to the area of the scratch or bite Immediately contact medical services. A vaccine is available and while it is rare to become infected, it can be fatal. You can contact: Your GP 13HEALTH information line on 13 43 25 84 Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service public health unit on 1300 017 190.

16.01.2022 The Goomeri Pool is reopening this weekend!!! Council is pleased to announce that the Goomeri Pool is reopening to the public this Saturday, 12 December 2020. To celebrate, council is inviting the community to enter the pool free of charge this Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 5pm at Moore Street, Goomeri.... Councillor Hilary Smerdon says this is a great outcome for the residents of Goomeri who have waited a long time for the pool to reopen. The township of Goomeri has been without a pool for a while now, and I am pleased to announce that the facility will be opening especially as temperatures begin to soar across the region. There is still more work that needs to be done to the facility, which has been scheduled after the end of this swimming season, but this won’t stop patrons from using the facility throughout Summer, he said. The Upgrade to Goomeri Pool project is a joint initiative of Gympie Regional Council and the Queensland Government. To find out more information about the Goomeri Pool, visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/swimming-pools-public

16.01.2022 We would like to thank the people of the Gympie Region for their generous donations to the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. Councillors Dolly Jensen and Shane W...aldock were on hand this morning to handover the nearly 300 books and toys to Lieutenant Zac Churchill of the Gympie Salvation Army Corps. The books and toys will go into Christmas stockings for over 260 families in our area ensuring children will not miss out this Christmas. See more

16.01.2022 A Message from the Mayor Our Christmas tree in Nelson Reserve has a chequered history to say the least, and although it’s not the poor tree’s fault, it is an example of where Council did not get it right and the community have ultimately paid the price. There’s no doubt residents want to see the region sparkling for Christmas and Council would like that too. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been an option for this Council to complete and decorate the Christmas tree in Nelson Reserve,... however all that has changed. What warms the heart is our community, driven by amazing people who step up to support the region and residents because they just want what is right. On Monday night, Groves Electrical, Energex, and our community came together and donated their time to deliver and decorate the Christmas tree because they wanted to make a difference. This was not driven by Council; this was driven by local businesses who wanted to give back to the community. On behalf of Council, thank you to the teams at Groves Electrical and Energex. Without you, we wouldn’t have a decorated tree. What a great bunch of people. And it’s not too late to donate. Simply take your home made decoration to the Gympie Library before Monday the 7th. Council is also working with the Chamber of Commerce in Gympie to return the annual ‘Mary Christmas’ nights to Mary Street. COVID-19 has changed our lives, and has certainly impacted nights like these. However, the chamber and Council are driven to deliver a night for families to come out and celebrate all we have to offer. Mary Street is something this community has that can’t be replicated, and on a summer’s night, there’s no better place to be. It may look a little different to past years thanks to Coronavirus, but the result is the same - a great night out to catch up with family and friends, do some shopping and grab a bite to eat. Both nights (Wednesday 16 and 23 December) start at 5pm. Head to the council website or Facebook page to find out more. Just remember to social distance and keep each other safe. I’ll see you there! Mayor Glen Hartwig

16.01.2022 Folks in the Gympie region know a thing or two about severe storms. Are you prepared for this storm season? find out more www.getready.qld.gov.au.

14.01.2022 'Recovering The Past', a highly original photographic exhibition that documents the social aftermath inflicted on Australian society by the First World War, is on display at the Gympie Regional Gallery until Saturday 23 January 2021. Accompanied by thought-provoking quotes sourced from Australia’s archives, this timely exhibition raises the profile of the traumatizing impact of the Great War as suffered by Australia’s grieving women and its returned soldiers. With a narrative... of consequences of war, this series of 25 large-format montage photographs features Australia’s famed Diggers and the Belgian Army’s Flanders-based bomb disposal team. The exhibition is touring Australia after having previously been exhibited at the Palais Des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland and the In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres, Belgium.

13.01.2022 A Message from the Mayor Monday afternoon was another major milestone for Council, holding a ‘special meeting’ where our CEO, Shane Gray, presented his 100 day review and due diligence report of the organisation. The in-depth report has been produced with information coming from staff, Councillors, community, businesses and external agencies, as well as experts in their fields to audit several areas across Council.... For me, this is another step towards returning Gympie Regional Council to a community and business focused organisation, with a culture of ‘how can we help you?’ To make any changes, you first need to fully understand the organisation and I would like to thank everyone who assisted to ensure a robust and measured report was delivered to Council. I would like to specifically thank staff for their openness and support during the process. The report and the new organisational structure was unanimously endorsed at the special meeting. This isn’t a standalone piece of work. We continue to work with numerous agencies, such as the QTC, to help us repair and become a council others look to as an inspiration. However, we have a long way to go, and the news isn’t always good. Our financial position is still a challenge. We are working with staff to repair this, but Rome wasn’t built in a day; it will take us time to get back to a position we can all be proud of. The report isn’t just our report. Council endorsed the release of the review to the public we are your council, spending your hard earned money and you deserve to know what is happening. We can’t use the word transparent and not open our doors to our community - actions speak louder than words. You will see the report on the Council website in the next week. On behalf of Council I would like to thank our CEO Shane Gray. We know we have many areas that are working well; however it would be naive not to acknowledge that we have many gaps and areas for improvement, and it is encouraging to see us on our way. Mayor Glen Hartwig

13.01.2022 A big welcome home to Widgee's own Tino Fa'asuamaleaui. The Maroon's superstar is in town before hitting preseason training with the Titans in January. Thank you Tino. You are a fantastic ambassador for the region. Best of luck in 2021.

11.01.2022 A Message from the Mayor Over the past few months, I have been sharing some stories about our region and how beautiful our natural surroundings are. However, what makes our region such a great place to live is the people, and their ability to inject so much community spirit, especially during this difficult time. We are fortunate to have so many talented individuals in our region who are dedicated to making our community special by donating their time to help others and offer...ing their talents to the many charities, events and sporting groups within our region. The Australia Day Awards provide a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge those people who work tirelessly and love being involved in our wider community. I always look forward to the Australia Day Awards, and next year’s event will be extra special for me as it will be the first time I have the honour of sharing the stage with some truly inspirational members of our community. You can nominate yourself or someone you know in one or more of the following categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Cultural Award, Youth Cultural Award, Youth Sports Award, Sports Administration Award, Community Event of the Year. I encourage everyone to get their nominations in as soon as possible, as entries close at 11pm, Monday 30 November 2020. 11.01.2022 Gympie Regional Council now has four portable water fill stations that are available for use by community groups. These fill stations are easy to set up - just plug them in to a normal garden tap/hose and they are good to go :). They even have their own internal filter! The Gympie District Hockey Association has used these fill stations in the past for a junior hockey clinic with great success. Recently, the stations were used for the club's grand final day back in September where more than 380 litres of water was consumed! If you'd like to book a portable water fill station for your next sporting event, contact Council on 1300 307 800. The stations are covered by a COVID safe plan to ensure the safety of both Council staff and the community.

08.01.2022 What a community we have here in the Gympie region. Decorations are pouring in from sporting clubs to decorate the Christmas tree in nelson reserve. A big thank you to Joel Albion and the crew from Energex and Doug Rose and the team at Groves Electrical who volunteered their time to mount the decorations and lighting. There is still time to donate. You can drop your donation off to the Gympie Library. Just make sure it weighs no more than 250 grams and can be secured.

08.01.2022 A message from Mayor Glen Hartwig Today marks a solemn day in our calendar. It’s a day we pause to remember the sacrifice of all those men and women from our nation, state and local community who have and who continue to serve our country. In a very special touch, members of our local army cadets have placed hundreds of Australian flags and poppies on the head stones of our local heroes who are no longer with us. Lest we forget.

08.01.2022 Multiple water mains have burst in Tin Can Bay this morning and unfortunately many residents in Tin Can Bay are without water. Council crews are on site and working to have this fixed as our highest priority. You may see the teams working at Dolphin Avenue and Tuna Way. While we fix the issue, we are arranging to have a drinking water pop-up stall available for residents. We’ll let you know the location as soon as they arrive. This drinking water will be at no charge to affe...cted residents. We also understand that some residents may not be able to access the pop-up stall. If you are a resident without drinking water in Tin Can Bay and cannot attend or access the stall we have set up, please call Council on 1300 307 800 and we'll help you. As soon as we have repaired the system and water is once again online, we'll let residents know as soon as possible. Thank you to all Tin Can Bay residents for your patience.

04.01.2022 Gympie Regional Council is calling on residents to donate decorations to hang on the Christmas tree in Nelson Reserve. The call is on the back of a number of local businesses donating lighting. 2020 has been a tough year for our community and if we can generate some Christmas spirit by decorating the tree, then Council is all for it, said Councillor Shane Waldock. ... I understand the Christmas tree has been a rather contentious issue in the past, but with the help of some generous local businesses we have been able to source some appropriate up lighting. We have had our expert council staff assess the condition of the tree and there will be some parameters on how we can decorate it. I am sure that whatever donations we receive will look fantastic,’ Cr Waldock said. What we need: The weight of the decoration cannot exceed 250 grams, and cannot be larger than a standard football. Suggested hanging design: Use wire coat hangers embedded in your design with the hook at the top. Where to donate: Gympie Library between 9am and 4pm. Community partners: Energex, Groves Electrical and Sherriff Electrical.

01.01.2022 'Ways of Seeing: Gympie Messmate Park', is now on display at the Gympie Regional Gallery until Saturday, 23 January 2021. This exhibition embodies history and conservation, and celebrates the Gympie Messmate (Eucalyptus cloeziana), which grows in the Gympie region. This exhibition shares the creativity and passion of a group of local artists that have been meeting at the gallery for over 15 years, whose works are inspired by Messmate Park, which is a dedicated 10acre reserv...e at Kia Ora with a very healthy supply of Messmates. This area, which was originally full of vegetation, was subjected to heavy deforestation in the 1950s due to farming. However, local councillors Mr WN (Nils) Buchanan, and Mr Arthur Portas assisted in transferring ownership of this land to the Queensland Government, and is now preserved by the ongoing work of volunteers and Gympie District Landcare. Artists that have contributed to this amazing exhibition include Chris Williams, Christina Croft, Denise Hickey, Don Cameron, Jean McAuley, Jeanette Parnell, Judy George, Marcia Parker, Margaret Neilson, Nonie Metzler, Pat Sutton and Tess Stuart, with the exhibition being curated by Sunshine Coast artist Anne Harris. During this exhibition there will be the opportunity to meet at Messmate Park for a beautiful guided tour. There will also be interactive demonstrations in the gallery. Entry to the Gympie Regional Gallery at 39 Nash Street is free, with opening hours from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday. For more information, visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/gallery or call 5481 0733.
