06.01.2022 I get asked for Moldavite near every day. .... i was just sent this info from one of our lovely Crystal people, and thought I should pass it on. MOLDAVITE. Yep, we get asked about it daily, just like you.... No, we don't have any. But we do feel the need to explain why. Moldavite was created when a meteorite hit the earth in Bolivia, Germany around 15 million years ago, creating the Nordinger crater. The impact fused the meteorite and the surrounding material which was tthen thrown up into the atmosphere and rained down to create a splash field covering the Czeck Republic, Austria, Germany and the Republic of Moldova. Moldavite is a form of tektite but its high composition of silica gives it the translucent green colour. Over the years, moldavite has gradually been mined out and has become rarer and rarer. In line with this, the prices have risen higher and higher. Again, in line with a rise in rarity, and also in value, the other thing that rises is the amount of fake moldavite. Much more so than amber, you will see more fake than real. As it is a silicate it is very easy to fake and they are very good at it. We have seen shops full of fake moldavite, and we have seen people there buying in bulk to either wholesale or retail. Some don't realise or think to ask of its real, some don't really care. We only ever buy from trusted people who mine it themselves and due to covid have not been at international trade shows to source it. BUYER BEWARE. Yes, we all know about the tik tok clip and the fad that has been created. Easy to cash in, easy for us to risk buying and hoping what we get is real, but we really aren't in to that. So our advice is, if you want to go for it, be very careful, and don't assume that just because the people you are buying it from are reputable, that they haven't been taken advantage of. There are ways of testing authenticity. Don't just rely on the absence of bubbles. Poor fakes have bubbles, good fakes do not. Look for Lechatelierite (Google it). Usually a safer way is to buy moldavite from sterling silver jewellery suppliers that you trust. Moldavite is worth so much these days that the silver part of the jewellery doesn't alter the price all that much. Good luck, and don't go nuts as this fad will wear off, and you may be stuck with a lot of (hopefully real) high priced moldavite that nobody really wants any more.
