25.01.2022 (). Yesterday I spent 4 hours on-site with one of my clients and it was RAD. ... Myself and the senior management team (GM, Ops Manager and Head Chef) all sat down in a very empty, very closed venue and had lunch together. Not only was the food amazing but to actually sit down and share a meal, and shoot the breeze with a few humans that you haven’t seen in a few weeks due to this shit-show was really good for the soul. I decided about a week before the industry was forced to close that I would continue to work for my clients for free (or whatever they could afford) until they were open again. When the inevitable happened, I stuck to my promise. Why? Firstly, as far as I’m concerned I’ve made an investment in them and I’m going to see it through. We’ve worked hard to be smashing YOY growth and I’m absolutely not taking my foot off the accelerator now. Plus, when we’re back ‘on’ again I’d prefer to start on the front foot instead of playing catch-up. We’ll reinvent, renew, renovate and be back better than we were before. Secondly, we need to maintain some kind of routine. As much as indulging in ‘Quarantini’s’ at lunchtime every day for a week was fun - I’m ready to get back to work. A huge part of our social interaction each day is with those crazy characters we work with. Our second home. Our work husbands, our works wives, our work kids - Family. I’ve heard some great stories over the last week of staff, although laid off, sticking around to help clean up, pack down, drop in for chats. Everyone is at a loose end and once the grief subsides, don’t be surprised if your staff turn up looking for something to do, or some way to help. I’ll admit it’s been on the invitation from clients to get me out of the house this week. Day one I was inspired as hell to make great use of the time off I’d just been given but the shell-shock finally set in. The days whizzed past with not a lot accomplished and as someone who smashes through a lot of work, the only thing I was regularly smashing was a chilled red at 3pm. HOWEVER. As it turns out the antidote was simply just getting back to some normality. Albeit a new normal. It’s probably just working a few days a week for a while, but I would encourage you to reach out to other venues, your staff, contractors or whoever else can help move you forward and catch up. Two heads are better than one and a whole industry pulling together has got to be even better. Plan some things, keep some things ticking along. We will definitely need to fight our way out of this, but we certainly don’t need to do it alone. Yesterday's duck meatball pasta was a reminder that it’s business as (un)usual, but the show goes on. Hospitality is our home, they’re going to need a fucking wrecking ball to take us out of here. Cheers & beers, Maddy

11.01.2022 Hi Everyone, I know you will all probably have some horrible discussions today with your staff body, I’m well aware that this is unsolicited advice but hopefully there is at least something useful in the below. ... I went through the last GFC - at the time I was working in Communications in the building industry, which imploded. Being young and care-free I ended up overnight with no income, no savings, and of course, on Centrelink. I’ve been in the same spot they’re facing today. Hoping these tips will assist them in some way: Work out where you are at financially. Things like AfterPay are those sneaky little debts that will come up now to bite them in the ass. Give them a heads up to work out what they owe so there are no surprises later. Do NOT go and take out pay-day loans from places like CashConverters or Nimble, you’ll spend 300% of what you borrowed paying it back. If they are overwhelmed with debt, the first step is the FREE National Debt Hotline. 1800 007 007, they are open Monday to Friday from 9.30am - 4.30pm. This should be their first call before things like MyBudget etc. Make use of your time. There’s a fork in the road right now and it's a choice which path you take. Don’t sit around watching Netflix and drinking to pass the time. If you can come out of this situation better educated than you came into it, that is truly a gift. On the Jobseeker allowance, all recipients are entitled to either cheap or fully-funded study for a cert 3 and above. This is a TEMPORARY situation. The second we’re allowed, we will open the doors and fuck my life, it’s going to be the biggest cash injection we have ever seen. Tradies have been missing out on the crisp sensation that only tap beer can give, Mums will be drinking chardy by the bucketful and the pokie room will be heaving. It’s going to be the Steven Bradbury of comebacks we’re just on pause for a little bit. This is just my uneducated opinion, but I don’t think we’ll be in this for 6 months. But if we are - 23rd, September last year doesn’t seem like that long ago. 23rd, September 2020 is 6 months from now. Pencil it in your diary because I will meet you all at the bar, we can collectively put the limits of RSA to the test and say We got through this. It was fucked. But we got through it. I’ll be out and about today, so if you need support with anything just give me a call. Best of luck today, my thoughts are with you. Maddy
07.01.2022 Balter Brewing Company always have CRACKER ads and this one does not dissappoint. We definitely had wet eyes when we got to go have our first schooey in months - this ad brings it all back and captures the moment perfectly. #neverforget *Disclaimer* Please don’t touch parmas, snooker balls and or beer coming out of taps and always social distance responsibly. Even when being carried on the warm breeze of nostalgia towards the golden light of a lost love. Written and Endorsed by Balter Brewing Co.
05.01.2022 [ , , - ] Over the last few weeks, we have been gearing up to actually ‘participate’ our business in social media. I do realise the irony of marketers who don’t market, but referrals have always kept us busy, so I was just happy to focus on marketing for our clients. But now I think I need to say something, even if it’s just to gather my own thoughts. ...Continue reading
04.01.2022 Big congratulations to Daniel Hearn from Paradise Point Bowls who got a double-whammy of an article in the GC Bulletin and feature on Nine local news yesterday. A good relationship with the local MP, determination and some serious community spirit is paying off in spades. They have set up a Bowls Brigade of staff members offering 'life support' to locals. Whether it's collecting groceries, getting them to a medical appointment or just for a chat.... It's that sort of stuff that brings a tear to my eye and is exactly the reason why I love working with Community Clubs
