25.01.2022 ** Case Study of the Week** 11 year old patient with known allergies. This young man came to see me so his Mum could get an idea of where he was at health wise.... He has a long history of eczema and allergies and this had become his "normal". In his blood film we could see a lot of eosinophils which are our bodies white cells that are involved in helping with allergies and parasitic infections. Actually approximately 27% of his white cells were eosinophils which is very high, normally they would be between 1-4%. He also showed signs of inflammation with fibrin clusters present. These types of inflammatory markers are less commonly seen in children but because he has a long history of allergies his body is responding with signs of chronic inflammation. As much as he gets along ok and manages his allergies, a chronic state of inflammation is not ideal long term. Because of his age and his understanding of what was happening within his body, he is old enough to start taking responsibility for his own health by being cooperative with his Mum and health care practitioners. I have referred him to an excellent naturopath who specialises in children and she will look at his diet further and assess any additional food intolerances, look at environmental issues, optimise his gut health and look to reduce the inflammation. I'm looking forward to reviewing his blood film in around 6 months time to see the improvements and I expect that he will feel like a new kid! See more

25.01.2022 Tired Mums, this one is for you x

21.01.2022 I am so excited to be starting a part time position next week as a hospital medical scientist. This is going to expand my skill set and expertise in my own business and enable to me to offer an even better service to both my patients and practitioners.

21.01.2022 This will ruffle some feathers but I'm just going to say it! Not all Live Blood Practitioners do a good job! A question on a practitioner only FB page:... "PARASITES. I feel like every person I meet who has seen a naturopath has been told they have parasites. Just because they have gut symptoms and ESPECIALLY if they've had live blood analysis done. Anyone else with me on this?? I do the 3 day parasitology test before telling someone they have parasites. Thoughts???" My Reply: "This is why most naturopaths shouldn't do live blood; they give it a bad name. They are prescribing based on what they find which is not an independent assessment. They will be referring to a raised eosinophil count however pretty much no-one except me does a proper 100-200 white cell count differential which is the standard for assessing white cells so its not accurate, they would just be scanning around and looking to see if there are esoinophils there. Raised eosinophils are an indicator of an allergenic and/or parasitic processes happening, this includes pin/thread worms, which is very common. With the presence of "leaky" gut signs in the blood you can narrow it down to food sensitivities and/or gut parasite but you still need further testing before treating for a parasite.I certainly don't rush into CDA or CDSA but if its really indicated then yes based on presentation and naturopathic assessment and better to try for facael PCR with M+C+S first via GP. Non-evidenced based forms of live blood claim to be able to detect parasites but that's in the blood not the gut. You can see Malaria, Babesia and very rarely Borellia but none of them are commonly seen and trust me I've seen 100's of 1000's of blood films in hospital labs and private pathology as well as my own practice." So make sure you check out the qualifications of your Live Blood Practitioner and look for someone who uses an evidenced based practice and can give you an independent opinion not one that comes with a minimum $400 prescription. And if you want a second opinion you know where to find me

19.01.2022 Hahaha! Certainly not my friends but maybe my children

17.01.2022 I had a lovely 68 year old patient this week who had a range of health conditions and wasn't in the best health. He was about to start on a new exciting chapter... in his life and knew it was time to address his health. Unfortunately most of what was going on with him was actually from poor diet and lifestyle choices yet he had no idea much it was affecting his body and how serious it all was and how much permanent damage had already been done. He was on a cocktail of drugs for different conditions and had no idea that each health issue was all very inter-related. He said to me "Well we all have to die one day!" and I agreed but in this situation we usually don't just drop dead we have years of ill health and declining quality of life as well as dependency on our loved ones before we drop dead. As you know I'm not just about preventative health care but also healthy aging and longevity. I want you to age well and have a great quality of life and to be active and enjoy your family well into your 90's. It's not just luck, many of these diseases such as Type Two Diabetes are lifestyle disease's! Yes you read right! LIFESTYLE! It's not unfortunate or bad luck you happen to develop diabetes, you have a choice and when caught early enough it can be reversed or at the very least be well managed to prevent further damage. Type Two Diabetes is one of the truly systemic diseases which means it affects every organ system in the body and it's a slow painful decline which often includes liver and kidney failure, loss of eyesight, cardio-vascular issues such as strokes, tendency to gangrenous infections resulting in amputations and the list goes on. Not pleasant at all! Unfortunately many people to not realise they have the start of diabetes which is called metabolic syndrome. Many Dr's overlook the signs and symptoms of metabolic syndrome including in the blood tests. They see so much metabolic syndrome they often don't even mention they wait wait until you actually have Type Two Diabetes before acting. Bit late then! If you'd like to find out more about your overall health and if you have metabolic syndrome which is the step before Type Two Diabetes then book into see me for microscopic blood analysis and pathology review where I can see where you health is really at! Feel free to message me if you have any questions, I'm always happy to chat all things blood and your health!

15.01.2022 I’ve got your back. Working in integrative medicine gives my patients the best of both worlds. Both naturopathic and mainstream allopathic medicine.... When reviewing pathology results yesterday, my patient had asked me to look over the ECG results as well. Although she had already been given the ok from her cardiologist, she still wanted my opinion. ECG’s are not my area of expertise and I always work within my scope of practice and advised her of this. However as I also work within mainstream medicine, I have access to some amazing specialists in different areas. So I had three cardiac specialist colleagues take a quick look over the results. (I was lucky to find three in the one spot! ) All good. And this is what I love about my work, it’s not an all or nothing approach but finding one that works in my patients best interest.

14.01.2022 **Case Study of the Week!** 12 year old female, pre-menarche, active with a good diet. She is tall and slim and has dark circles under her eyes but otherwise we...ll. Her blood film showed red cells changes such as elliptocytes and ovalocytes and a significant variation in red cell size. These changes along with the presence of hypersegmented neutrophils (5 or more segments) is suggestive of an iron and/or Vitamin B12/Folate insufficiency. There are also some crumpled looking cells present which we term poikilocytes. These can be seen in oxidative stress states but this is less likely in a healthy 12 year old and is more likely associated with low iron levels affecting the production haemoglobin in the red cells in turn affecting the shape and size of the cells. Interestingly her iron and Vitamin B12 levels came back from pathology within normal range but from a naturopathic point of view her ferritin and Vitamin B12 levels were at the lower end of the recommended range and certainly well below the naturopath/nutritionist preferred ranges. These results interpreted by one of my practitioner partners indicated that this young woman was heading towards iron insufficiency but we were onto it nice and early. This is a great example of where the blood analysis I perform can pick up and pre-empt a more serious health condition. See more

13.01.2022 For the Westies out there. I'm back at Western Health Collective this Thursday 7th November in the afternoon/evening and have a couple of spots left. For bookings www.westernhealthcollective.com.au

12.01.2022 Now is not the time to give up on exercise and hide away. Exercising outdoors has many benefits, most importantly helping your body to produce Vitamin D which we know from valid research is Nature’s Flu Shot! Keeping your Vitamin D levels up as close to or ideally greater than 100 helps boost immune function, improves mood, aids weight loss (Yes! Studies show up to 9 kg) and better exercise tolerance.... Being in green space and breathing fresh air also has many health benefits particularly for improving mood and lowering anxiety. Experts rate obesity as high as smoking for increased risk of death from flu like illnesses. So now and coming into Winter is not the time to be sitting on your couch counting your rolls of bog paper. Your gym closing is no excuse. Get to it people!

11.01.2022 Do you know what blood group you are? By donating blood not only do you get to find out but you are also able to help three people in desperate need of blood an...d blood products. 1 bag of blood is equivalent to 450ml of whole blood which is then processed into packed red cells, fresh frozen plasma and platelets ready to help those in need. Coming into Christmas the Australian Red Cross Blood Service blood stocks become critically low and it really could be the best ever Christmas gift someone could receive so it's time to roll up your sleeves and get donating! 11.01.2022 Your body is very clever and knows when to shut itself down to heal from trauma. All we need to do is follow its cues. I had a nasty car accident yesterday and after clearance from ambulance, my GP and a visit to my osteopath, I went to bed and slept for 20 hours!... Yes an epic 20 hours! And I listened to my body and went with it. It needed time and deep rest to recover from the shock and physical impact. It’s a great example of when your body knows better and when we need to listen and follow. What health cues is you body giving you that you are ignoring? And I’m doing fine, just a little bruised and sore, nothing further rest and osteopathic treatment won’t fix thanks to Osteopath Joanna Strybosch

10.01.2022 This week I’ve seen results from two patients, one with a CRP of 455 (acute inflammatory marker) and another with a GGT of 1350 (liver enzyme). These are extremely abnormal results! Any wonder the lab reference ranges on our blood test reports are so wide.... They include a spectrum of very sick people and it’s easy for us to have seemingly normal results, yet still feel unwell. This helps us understand why our Dr’s don’t flinch with the normal or mildly abnormal results and symptoms we jump up and down about. Personally I think it is worth jumping up and down about these results considering mainstream medicine gives little consideration to preventative health care. My colleagues and I, in naturopathic and integrative medicine are the only ones practicing preventative health care and are trying to avoid these full blown disease states. So if you’re feeling unwell yet your Dr says your blood test results are all normal, consider a pathology review with Haemanalysis. This is where I look at your blood test results and compare them to a healthy person not a bunch of sick people. I do additional calculations to dig very deeply into your overall health to give you answers and direction and help put put preventative healthcare in place. And it can all be done online. Message me for more info Now is the time to focus on your health and well being

07.01.2022 Seriously feeling crap. post anaesthetic after short day procedure this morning I didn’t bother asking if they use nitrous oxide as part of the anaesthetic because my anaesthetic collegues said they rarely use it nowadays. except during child birth (remember that one ladies!) That was a mistake as yes they did and I never react well to it! ... This is because it depletes our Vitamin B12 levels and Vitamin B12 is essential for the brains biochemistry and has important roles in energy production, production of neurotransmitters such as our sleep, stress and happy hormone production, liver detox pathways and many more. I also have many genetic variants or mutations around Vitamin B12 metabolism so I can struggle with B12 at the best of times so nitrous oxide is to be avoided for me unless there’s no other choice. So how to fix this and get myself balanced out again before I start feeling worse with increasing fatigue, brain fog, difficulty concentrating, anxiety and low mood? I’ve already been crying like a baby this afternoon I will be starting on a B group supplement with lots of B12 and all the right cofactors to make my methylation pathways go around like merry go rounds Of course, not self prescribed but recommended and supplied by appropriately qualified Naturopaths so I will get the best results, faster! If you’d like to know more about Vitamin B12 and all the wonderful B group Vitamins and if you have a genetic profile where this can cause issues particularly if you have any of the symptoms I’ve mentioned above then feel free to ask any questions or PM me for more information Now I’m off for another nana

07.01.2022 **Strange Creatures Lurking in Your Blood** This is a type of white cell in the blood called a neutrophil. It is magnified x 1000 and you can see it changing sh...ape as it moves along like an ameoba looking for something to eat. Neutrophils are our bloods number one white cell and are involved in clearing infections mainly bacterial and inflammatory responses. They are known as the cleaners of the white cell family, always moving around hunting for junk to eat. They move form the blood into the tissues where they help clean up after trauma or infection, the majority of pus is dead neutrophils. If we do not have enough of these important white cells our immune system can easily be overwhelmed by bacterial infections it would normally be able to fight off. This is why people having chemotherapy have their white cell count monitored closely, it's often not the cancer that kills a patient but the infections as a side effect of the chemo. See more

07.01.2022 Haemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying molecule in our blood so very important pretty much for every bodily process. For a healthy female, we expect your haemoglobin to roughly be between 120-150. We had a woman in her late 30's come into emergency last week with a Haemoglobin of 24! ... 24! She was lucky to be alive. That is the lowest haemoglobin level any of us in the hospital had ever seen and she walked into the emergency department. And yes it was a true result and repeated using another method and different sample. To get it up to the lower limit of healthy would take a transfusion of around 10 units of packed red cells. One unit of blood = roughly a 10 point rise in Haemoglobin levels. So they started her with 5 units of blood. And how does this happen? Humans are amazingly adaptable and her blood loss most likely from heavy periods had probably been ongoing for a long period of time so her body tried to compensate and she coped. She would have depleted all her iron stores until her body could no longer produce enough red cells for her to function properly then with further heavy bleeding on top she could no longer cope. Further investigations were taking place to rule out any underlying some bone marrow dysfunction but we were all amazed that she was still alive and walked into ED! Thank goodness for our regular blood donors.

06.01.2022 I’ve always struggled to meditate but the more I’ve persevered the easier it has become. The key is to keep it simple, there is no wrong or right, every meditation session is different, the most important thing is that you do it. The health benefits are far reaching, reducing stress and anxiety are the first noticeable effects but the positive effects of reducing chronic inflammation are the most important.... Chronic inflammation drives chronic disease: diabetes, cardiovascular disease including heart attacks, strokes, the development of auto-immune disease and most importantly it sets up an environment where cancer cells can establish and replicate. Microscopic Blood Analysis is a screening tool we use to look at different chronic inflammatory markers than aren’t always picked up in routine pathology testing. To see if chronic inflammation is an issue for you and if you need proof to take on a regular meditation practice then appointments can be made via www.haemanalysis.com.au or by messaging me

05.01.2022 Alien blood? The sample on the right is a normal coloured serum blood sample. The sample on the left is a lovely shade of green which is definitely not normal.... The patient wasn’t on any medications that could cause colour changes, not that that I’ve ever seen one quite this dramatic. Then we worked out it was because the patient had been injected with a blue dye for contrast during a biopsy procedure. Yellow blood plasma + blue dye = ? Green serum of course Fascinating! Well I think so and this is why I love my job
