21.01.2022 Happy Easter From all of us at HAGSOC we would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Easter

21.01.2022 research team at the University of Newcastle in Australia https://www.newcastle.edu.au/ (Drs Shaw, Donnelly, Burke and Parkes from the School of Education) are conducting research into family history and DNA testing and its impacts on people’s understanding of themselves and their place in history as well as some general demographic information. To this end, we are conducting an online survey which is expected to take about 20 minutes. This study is an Australian first and provides your group members with an exciting opportunity to be involved in a new worldwide project about exploring the past. We are hoping that you would be able to share the attached invitation, either by email or social media, with your group’s members and direct them to the link provided: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2DDTC2L

16.01.2022 On this day in 1847, Dr James Simpson successfully used chloroform as an anaesthetic in Edinburgh, which allowed Victorian patients to have surgery without bein...g drunk, held down or knocked out. During the 1840s, Simpson and two colleagues ran experiments to find safer, more effective anaesthetics. But these weren’t your run-of-the-mill scientific endeavours. They took place after dinnerat his dinner table and the test subjects were friends, family and colleagues! On 4 November 1847, the three gentlemen used a substance they’d previously discounted: chloroform. Tales of this legendary dinner party have been rather embroidered over the years it's very likely that Simpson had already tried chloroform and knew it would work but its outcome is undoubted. They initially reported some light-headedness and laughter, and then quite suddenly...they lost consciousness. They were soon testing on Simpson’s niece, Miss Petrie, who began singing "I am an angel" under the influence of chloroform! Within the week, Dr Simpson had used it in childbirth and surgical procedures. Sir James Young Simpson gives the first public demonstration of his new anaesthetic and a few days later publishes his highly influential Account of a New Anaesthetic Agent.
