12.01.2022 RECALL ALERT Veganpet Dry Dog Food 1kg / 15kg linked to a number of Megaesophagus cases. Veganpet believe only one batch is affected and are investigatin...g the cause. Known affected batch: # 02026021, expiry date 21 July 2021. Statement from Veganpet: The health and welfare of all animals has always been important to us and the underlying reason why we started distributing Veganpet over twenty years ago. We are deeply concerned by reports we have received of dogs being afflicted with megaoesophagus. While we do not presently have any reason to believe that this multifactorial condition can be caused by our Vegapet dry dog food, out of an abundance of caution, we want to take all steps possible to avoid any risk of harm to any dogs and are therefore recalling our Vegan dry dog food immediately. We understand from our records that your store/s made a purchase of Veganpet dry food recently. We are therefore contacting you to advise you to check whether you have Veganpet dry dog food batch number 02026021 expiry date 21 July 2021 and if so, to please remove the product from your shelf immediately in both 1kg and 15kg sizes. We confirm that this recall relates only to one batch of Veganpet dry dog food, batch number 02026021, which is printed on the outer foil bag in the 15kg product (photo attached). On the 1 kg bag, it is readily identifiable by the expiry date 21 July 2021 (photo attached). Please dispose of this food and cut out the batch codes and expiry date to enable us to keep track of the number of bags and to enable your reimbursement. Our dogs are the heart of our family here at Veganpet and we feel greatly for those that have lost a family member to megaoesophagus, or whose dogs may have been diagnosed with the condition. Veganpet has been produced safely for over twenty years by our same manufacturer and there has been no change in the quality, formulation or process used in the product as it is supplied to us. Investigation and testing into this multifactorial condition by the manufacturer will continue at pace to get to the bottom of this issue. We are also in contact with the owners of the affected dogs to offer support and information at this difficult time. We demand the very best standards for our animals and will work collaboratively with industry bodies and customers to ensure swift resolution of this issue. Please email us with any queries and we apologise for any inconvenience. Veganpet

12.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who signed my petition to stop convenience killing in our pounds and shelters! I just wanted to let everyone know that a motion for pound ...reform was passed in Parliament yesterday with almost unanimous support!!! This is a first in Australia - it includes mandatory kill reporting, ensuring rescue groups can save death row animals, reviewing outdated behavioural assessments, and more desexing initiatives. The government has committed to a working group to implement the reforms. 10.01.2022 What a difference a month of TLC, good food and vet care have made for Sia! Her story is back on June 12th, but after her owner died suddenly she was taken to a... Gippsland pound, before R2R took her into foster. Alas, we think her poor condition may have been associated with terrible teeth - the vets had to remove 27 teeth! But now she has put on 4kgs and has a new lease of life with a spring in her step, and she just loves her daily walks. Thanks to Catherine Ongarello for all her care and vet trips to get Sia back on her paws and now looking for a forever home to enjoy her twilight years. 10.01.2022 SO JUST HOW LONG DO YOUR PET’S SHOTS LAST? Definitely longer than a year! According to the top pet immunologist (aka vaccine expert) in the world, Dr. Ronald Sc...hultz, Ph.D. Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may increase the risk for adverse reactions. What the heck are adverse reactions (or side effects)? Well according to the other rock star pet immunologist Dr. Jean Dodds: Side effects from dog vaccinations can occur anywhere from instantly up to several weeks or months later. Vaccines can even cause susceptibility to chronic diseases that appear much later in a dog’s life (Dodd, 2001). Severe and fatal adverse reactions include: Susceptibility to infections. Neurological disorders and encephalitis. Aberrant behavior, including unprovoked aggression. Vaccines are linked to seizures. Distemper, parvovirus, rabies and, presumably, other vaccines have been linked with poly neuropathy, a nerve disease that involves inflammation of several nerves. (Dodds,2001) SO HOW LONG EXACTLY DOES YOUR PET’S VACCINE LAST? According to the recommendations of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), (basically the dudes who set the standards for the vets): Among healthy dogs, all commercially available [core] vaccines are expected to induce a sustained protective immune response lasting at least 5 yr. thereafter Here’s the breakdown of the core vaccines from Dr. Ronald Schultz: Minimum Duration of Immunity for Canine Vaccines: Distemper- 7 years by challenge Parvovirus 7 years by challenge Adenovirus 7 years by challenge Canine rabies 3 years by challenge The moral of the story here, if you have no idea when your pet is due or has been vaccinated, then just run a titer test and this will confirm if you are due, rather than over-vaccinate your poor pet, setting the stage for future problems! What’s a titer test? A titer test (pronounced tight-errr) is a laboratory or in-house veterinary test measuring the existence and level of antibodies (necessary to fight off disease) in your pet’s blood. Basically, it’s a test that will tell you whether or not you actually need to vaccinate your pet. It’s also super useful when making a decision about vaccinating a pet with an unknown vaccination history, or for determining if pets have received immunity from vaccination. Vaccinating your pet is super important so don’t lose the overall message here: VACCINATE, JUST DON’T OVER-VACCINATE! According to Dr. Dodds: Vaccines have achieved many important benefits for companion animals, and has saved more animals' lives than any other medical advance. Want more on titer testing? Check it out: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153271303942028&set=pb.509362027.-2207520000.1461100680.&type=3&theater Rodney Habib "An educated, informed and well-researched community of pet owners can only put more pressure on the pet food industry to be better! When pet owners know better, they will only do better!"

06.01.2022 THE NOT TALKED ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS OF THE MOST POPULAR DRUG IN THE WORLD! Metronidazole is the most prescribed antimicrobial for treatment of diarrhea & GI ...problems in pets and a new study highlights some very important issues that pet parents and their veterinarians need to talk about before prescribing this drug. The new study from the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine found metronidazole administration obliterated a dog’s microbiome and a month after the drug, the microbiome was still profoundly destroyed. Our results point toward a longlasting effect of metronidazole administration, and should be considered as further evidence to support a more cautious approach to prescribing this antimicrobial to dogs. - https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/jvim.15871 Has your pet been on this medication? This Sunday at 10am ET, Dr. Karen Becker and I will have a quick discussion about this new study and Dr. Becker will go over what you need to to think about before and after using this medication. 02.01.2022 This morning when I woke up I was reminded that I need to give my dogs their tick treatments. Not by a reminder I set (I am not that organised) or a reminder fr...om my vet (they don’t push chemicals on us), but by a post on Facebook telling me that if I give my dogs chemical flea and tick treatments then I need to accept the fact that I am killing my own dogs, and begging me please do not poison your pets because it is simply not worth the risk. These posts love to point out that flea and tick treatments are poison. Like, yeah, they are literally poison, Einstein. You have’t uncovered some industry secret, that’s the actual purpose of the product. I do not take the decision to give my dogs chemical preventatives lightly. I hate doing it. I have heard the many horror stories about bad reactions. But I have also looked into the risks, and I have discussed it extensively with my vet. I live in northern NSW in Australia, in a rural area where the temperature at the moment hits around 30 degrees celsius by lunch time most days. It is tick season. And the ticks here are paralysis ticks. Any local vet will tell you they have extremely sick dogs coming into their clinics every day, many of whom don’t make it home. I personally know people who have lost dogs to paralysis ticks. To suggest (as these posts did) that vets only push these products to make money is, frankly, pretty bloody rude. I don’t agree with a lot of things about the veterinary industry. I think we over vaccinate, over medicate and the food is fucking rubbish. But I spent a long time finding a vet who listens to me and respects my concerns and my choices. I am not saying you should give your pets chemical preventatives. Personally, if I lived in an area with no paralysis ticks or heartworm, I would not give my dogs any chemical treatments whatsoever. I am saying that whether you do or not is entirely up to you, and you should make an informed choice that you are comfortable with. Yes, there are risks. And you should weigh them up in the context of your personal circumstances. Today I gave my dogs a half dose of a flea and tick treatment because I feel I need to provide protection against paralysis ticks and unfortunately you cannot buy a chemical preventative for only ticks. I am not comfortable giving them the all in one treatments that include worming, and my vet agrees that separating these treatments is preferable. I space their doses out further than the packet recommends and I always provide nutritional support when I do treat. My dogs each got a feast meal of a salmon head that weighed around 800g, so they will be actively digesting an anti inflammatory meal for most of the day, and physically resting. I also gave them a smoothie with their food that contained lots of water for hydration, as well as spirulina, kelp, wheatgrass powder and glutamine, which will (hopefully) help them mitigate the poison in the treatment. If you feel your vet pushes unnecessary products and doesn’t listen to your concerns, find a new vet. If you feel your pet will benefit from a treatment that people on Facebook say is bad, ignore them. Don’t feel bad for not listening to fear mongering.
