25.01.2022 Why is it important for salon workers to undertake basic family violence training? Because very few women experiencing family violence approach specialist services or the police in the first instance. They are often ashamed, have previously had a bad experience or fear that they won't be believed. It's far more likely for women to seek support from someone they trust or have developed a bond or rapport with like their hairdresser or beauty therapist. With proper family viole...nce training, salon workers can play a vital part in guiding a woman towards safety by reducing the stigma around disclosing violence, and passing on information about services that can safely provide support. To empower your staff with the skills to help clients experiencing family violence, slide into our DMs to book a free HaiR-3Rs training in 2021 or contact [email protected]/ 03 9259 4200

25.01.2022 We know salons are busy places and taking time out to do training isn’t always easy. This week HaiR-3Rs is appearing on our very first billboard to spread the word that free online family violence training for salons is available during lockdown! If you work at a salon in Melbourne that has closed due to Stage 4 restrictions, please get in touch with us to book your free HaiR-3Rs training. By learning the 3Rs Recognise, Respond, Refer you will be prepared and empowered to help clients experiencing family violence when salons reopen. To arrange your session, email [email protected], call 92594200 or PM us. Extra special thanks to the wonderful Beci Orpin for designing our gorgeous billboard and to the legendary folks at LOVE POLICE for giving us this opportunity. You are our HaiR-3Rs angels!

24.01.2022 Let that sink in a moment... That statistic might be surprising or confronting, especially for women living in Victoria. Violence towards anyone is unacceptable but for women, too often it's lethal.

24.01.2022 We believe violence in the community is everyone’s business and we all have a part to play in ending it. If you work in a salon, you are well placed to help someone experiencing family violence. However, we know that many of you already undertake a significant amount of emotional labour and the last thing you need is to feel that an additional burden is being placed on you. We want to empower salon professionals with proper training and make sure that you understand your role.... You don’t need to be an expert on family violence or fix the problem and you are not expected to be a counsellor. Your local family violence service has staff that are trained to counsel and offer appropriate help and support. You can find your local family violence service in Victoria by visiting orangedoor.vic.gov.au/find-a-service-near-you. For free HaiR-3Rs training for salons in Victoria, DM us or contact [email protected]/ 03 9259 4200.

22.01.2022 We have TWO exciting announcements: HaiR-3Rs trainings are BACK! Thanks to Zoom, we're now able to offer training online.... Trainings for salons in Victoria are FREE! Thanks to the generosity of Doncaster East & Templestowe Village Community Bank Branches, we have 25 free HaiR-3Rs sessions for those working in hair and beauty in Victoria. For those who've followed us for awhile, you know the struggle we've had to keep providing training free of charge without ongoing funding. We're thrilled to have these sessions to offer, particularly as more women start to return to salons. We already know that many of these women will have experienced family violence for the first time during COVID-19 and we want to ensure that salon professionals have the skills to help guide their clients to family violence services for support and safety. For more info or to nab a session for your salon, contact [email protected] or call Eastern Domestic Violence Service on 03 9259 4200. Together, let's #cutoutfamilyviolence

22.01.2022 Check out ambassador Zowie Evans Hairdressing speaking so eloquently to The Saturday Paper about the essential service/space that hairdressers are providing to victim-survivors of family violence as salons reopen. With personal and beauty services returning this week, we are truly grateful for all the salon workers able to provide help and information to those who need it most.

19.01.2022 As part of our training, we look at commonly held beliefs about family violence. One that comes up frequently is that women should just leave abusive relationships. Many women choose to stay because they: believe that their children will be safer and better off... lack finances and resources fear abandonment by family and/or religious, spiritual or cultural community hope that their partner will change their behaviour lack support from the people around them are further isolated by barriers such as disability, age, culture, language or living in a remote area Rather than telling a client to 'just leave', remember that there are multiple practical and emotional barriers to women leaving an abusive relationship, and that women are at the most risk when they first leave a violent relationship. #helpcutoutfamilyviolence | . . . #hair3rs #EDVOS #recogniserespondrefer #hairstylist #beauty #hair #hairdressers #hairdressing #lovehair #freetraining #familyviolence #stopfamilyviolence #survivorstrong #awareness #endfamilyviolence #familyviolenceawareness #familyviolenceisnotokay #salonsagainstfamilyviolence #empoweringwomen #domesticviolence #domesticviolenceisnotokay #domesticviolenceawareness

18.01.2022 There's no one better to tell you about family violence training than people who've done it and felt so passionately about our program that they became ambassadors! From king of #intentionalfrizz @mr_d_hair of Delilah: 'HaiR-3Rs is at the forefront of the movement for equality and better, safer lives for women in Australia and around the world. I encourage every hair professional I know to become part of that future.'

16.01.2022 Women experiencing family violence are more likely to talk to someone they trust. Research shows that 68% choose their salon professionals because of the relationship and 84% trust their salon professional’s support. If you work in the hair and beauty, your skills are valuable far beyond the artistic and creative work you do. Your ability to listen and respond with empathy can change a woman’s life and help guide her towards the help she needs to escape violence.

16.01.2022 Research amongst women experiencing family violence shows that many would have told someone if they’d been asked, as it’s often easier to answer a question than bring up a ‘taboo’ topic. Asking a client if they’re experiencing family violence can be one of the most powerful things you can do. But for some salon workers the idea of asking is daunting you might be worried about not getting it right or potentially upsetting your client. To help overcome hesitation, we’ve put ...together this short resource on how salon workers can start a conversation about family violence with a client. though for tips and examples. To further increase your confidence and capacity, get in touch to book a HaiR-3Rs training session: [email protected]/ 02 9259 4200 or PM us. 16.01.2022 In Australia: - 2 women die every 10 days solely due to family violence - 1 in 4 children are affected by violence in the home - 3 women are hospitalised each week due to Acquired Brain Injury from family violence... - Intimate partner violence is the leading cause of death, disability and ill health of women aged between 18 and 44 We must call this what it is: an epidemic. #cutoutfamilyviolence

14.01.2022 This is a fantastic initiative from Deadly Connections Community & Justice Services Inc., who want to set up a culturally safe community hub (one stop shop) for First Nations people to engage in healing from grief, loss, trauma, family violence and institutional violence. This is particularly important given that Aboriginal women are 35 TIMES MORE LIKELY to be hospitalised by family violence than other women. It is so important for these women to be able to access help from services that recognise the impact of colonisation, Stolen Generations, racism and loss of language. Even if you’re not in the position to donate right now, sharing helps.

13.01.2022 The HaiR-3Rs team is all set for Victoria’s mask regulations. We’re sending and support to all our salon professional mates, many of whom who’ll be wearing these whilst having conversations with women about the violence they’re experiencing during COVID-19. You are all dead set legends and our community is so lucky to have you.

13.01.2022 These women are our friends, family, colleagues, neighbours, and clients. As a community, we must be prepared to take action against family violence. . . . #hair3rs #recogniserespondrefer #cutoutfamilyviolence #recogniserespondrefer #familyviolencetraining #familyviolence #endfamilyviolence #familyviolenceawareness #empoweringwomen #domesticviolence

11.01.2022 January 26 is the date on which Australia was invaded and land was violently stolen from First Nations people. HaiR-3Rs acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of this land and pays respect to Elders past, present and emerging. We don't believe today is a date to celebrate and support it being changed to a day that includes and celebrates the survival and strength of one of the oldest living cultures in the world. via @clothingthegap #alwayswasalwayswillbe #noprideingenoc...ide [Image description: Graphic with a yellow outline of Australia on a black background. 11.01.2022 An easy way to help clients experiencing family violence is to know your local family violence service. That way, if a client discloses, you’ll know where you can refer them for professional help and support. We recommend searching for your local family violence service and putting their contact information in staff areas for easy access. You could also contact your local service and ask them for materials such as brochures or posters to display in the salon in areas where cl...ients can access them discreetly, for example a poster on the back of a toilet door. Knowing your local service can help reduce the fear that many salon workers feel about what do if a client discloses. Rather than worrying about looking after them by yourself, you can say ‘I know a service that can help you. Would you like me to tell you about it?’ To find the family violence service in your area, visit https://orangedoor.vic.gov.au/find-a-service-near-you

10.01.2022 We had the great privilege of chatting to Hairblogstylist about our training for salons and how salon professionals can play a crucial role in helping women experiencing family violence during COVID-19. Big thanks to the wonderful Romy at Hairblogstylist for shedding a light on our program.

09.01.2022 Our training may be virtual atm but the connection is 100% genuine! Our educators had an absolute blast this week delivering HaiR-3Rs to the wonderfully engaged and enthusiastic teams at @delilah_hair_studio and @zowieevanshair. The training was also attended by program ambassadors Adrian aka @mr_d_hair and @zowieevanshairstylist who completed HaiR-3Rs again to refresh their Recognise, Respond, Refer skills.

08.01.2022 With increased rates of family violence occuring because of isolation during COVID-19, it's great to see these new ads from Respect Victoria. Where have you seen them?

08.01.2022 There are people in the North Melbourne and Flemington housing commission towers who have been put in lockdown with a perpetrator without warning. Not being allowed to do the same activities as their neighbours on Stage 3 restrictions, such as grocery shop or go to work, means denying them access to safe spaces where they can tell someone about the violence they’re experiencing and get help. Even if someone isn’t ready to seek help, being unable to go outside or for a walk me...ans there is no reprieve from the violence. 5 days might not seem like a long time but imagine how long it feels for someone experiencing family violence. These are just a few family violence providers that service the areas where the towers are located. However, it’s important to know that even if the family violence service contacted is out of area, they can help put someone in touch with their local service. Please share if it’s safe to do so.

07.01.2022 Shoutout to all the hair and beauty gurus out there providing so much more than a haircut. The work you do for your community, particularly those experiencing family violence, is invaluable. [Image description: graphic of a bill of service for a hair salon that reads 'Hair cut and colour, 120mins. Conducted in a safe, inclusive space by a hairdresser trained to recognise signs of family violence, respond to disclosures without judgement, and refer to the local family violence service. 07.01.2022 As salons around Melbourne go through their last day of trading today before a 6 week closure, we want to take some time to say thank you. THANK YOU for services you’ve provided over the last few months throughout ever-changing restrictions, lockdowns and financial uncertainty THANK YOU for the safe spaces you’ve provided for women experiencing family violence during COVID-19 THANK YOU for the difficult conversations you’ve had with those experiencing violence, for continu...ing to ask ‘Are you okay?’ even when you’re facing your own challenges You are, and always will be an ESSENTIAL part of our community and the fight to end violence against women. Whatever the next six weeks brings, we hope you’re able to get through it safely, with moments of peace.

06.01.2022 Close contact with clients in the salon means you could see more readily identifiable signs of family violence such as ripped hair, bruising, difficulty sitting, soreness around the neck, scratches etc. But not all family violence involves physical violence. When keeping aware for signs of family violence, remember that abuse can also be: intimidation/controlling behaviours verbal emotional social reproductive financial sexual spiritual/religious animal stalk...ing spousal homicide Remember family violence is when someone uses controlling, violent or harmful behaviours to exert control over another person, and make them fear for their safety. . . . #hair3rs #recogniserespondrefer #cutoutfamilyviolence #recogniserespondrefer #familyviolencetraining #familyviolence #endfamilyviolence #familyviolenceawareness #empoweringwomen #domesticviolence

06.01.2022 Recently, you may have seen black and white photos with the tag #challengeaccepted pop up across social media. Whilst women acknowledging and empowering other women in their lives is a lovely and worthy message, it’s important to keep focus on the important and urgent cause behind these photos. The #challengeaccepted movement was started in response to the murder of Pinar Gultekin, the latest Turkish woman to have been killed in a cruel and gruesome manner by someone known to... her. In July alone, 40 Turkish women have been murdered, with the perpetrator almost always a close male relative. In spite of this, the Turkish government is trying to abolish parts of The Istanbul Convention, a human rights treaty that protects women from domestic violence. The stats in Turkey are alarming, unacceptable and quite frankly, deeply felt. We witness daily the devastation that violence against women causes in Australia, with on average 2 women being killed every 10 days due to family violence. HaiR-3Rs stands with Turkish women, and women and children across the world whose lives are cut short because of violence. Ending violence against women is the challenge that we fight every day and will continue to until it ends. Will you join us in accepting this challenge?

02.01.2022 As a salon professional, clients may talk to you about problems they're having with a partner or family member. It can sometimes be difficult to know if what they're describing is normal relationship conflict or family violence. Here are 3 key things to know about family violence: Family violence is an abuse of POWER AND CONTROL... Family violence is when a person chooses to use violence, threats, force or intimidation in an ONGOING WAY Family violence makes someone FEAR FOR THEIR SAFETY AND WELLBEING Even if you're not sure if your client is experiencing family violence, it doesn't hurt to ask 'Are you ok?' Remember, no one has ever been hurt by being asked but people are hurt by never being asked.

02.01.2022 Elder abuse is a form of family violence and one that salon professionals are well placed to recognise, particularly those providing beauty services to aged care facilities. With World Elder Abuse Awareness Day this week, we highly recommend visiting the Seniors Rights Victoria website: https://seniorsrights.org.au/... They have a fantastic range of free resources, including the 'Concerned About an Older Person?' booklet, which includes signs of elder abuse and tips on how to help an older person experiencing elder abuse. #cutoutfamilyviolence
