24.01.2022 Please note the inclusion of hairdressing in the release!! Media Release 4 April 2020... Small business calls for fair deal in any further lockdowns The Tasmanian Small Business Council has called on Premier Peter Gutwein and Small Business Minister Sarah Courtney to treat small business fairly and not allow a concentration of market power in the hands of the big retailers in the event of further coronavirus protection measures in Tasmania. Tasmanian Small Business Council Chief Executive Officer, Robert Mallett made the comments amid increasing speculation that Victoria was contemplating so-called ‘stage four’ lockdowns with the retail sector likely to face more forced closures. Everybody accepts that the Government is acting in the best interests of all Tasmanians, but if the major chain supermarkets are favoured over small business it will have a devastating economic impact in the short and long term throughout state, Mr Mallett said. Essential goods and services are essential goods and services whether they are provided at a convenience store, a newsagency, a tobacconist, hairdresser or a major supermarket or retail chain. Small business has taken the COVID-19 message extremely seriously and are maintaining the highest possible standards of hygiene. In addition, by having a diversity of retailers providing essential services, the interactions are spread wider in more sparsely occupied retail outlets and so help to reduce the spread of COVID-19 as opposed to cramming them all into the local major chain. There are also many rural and regional areas throughout Tasmanian that are not served by the major chains such as the central highlands and east coast. It is important these regions can access essential services, but just as importantly it is vital that all Tasmania have access to a range of providers of essential services, not a simple focus a couple of large providers. If small business is shut down at the expense of big business during this pandemic, small business may never recover and our local communities will never be the same again, Mr Mallett said.
