18.01.2022 This week is #transawarenessweek, ending with the Transgender Day of Remembrance. Hair + Beauty is a wonderful industry! We're creative, passionate, proud, and we celebrate our workers across the gender and sexuality spectrum. But we're not perfect. Gendered and sexual discrimination and bullying is still felt by some of our LGBTQIA+ members and supporters. Trans rights are workers rights, and we will fight every day for safe, inclusive workplaces for ALL workers. ... If you're experiencing any bullying or discrimination at work, no matter your gender or sexuality, it's NEVER OK. Send us a PM any time if you're struggling, have questions, or need help. If you're free tonight, tune into a live Facebook broadcast tonight, where musicians, speakers and allies will come together, and remember. Find out more here: https://loom.ly/U8DSEyo (Credit to Minus18 for the pic. Minus18 is an amazing organisation that supports, empowers, and advocates for LGBTQIA+ youth in Australia. )

17.01.2022 Today, HSA joined unions across NSW in a call for change. 800,000 Australian workers are affected by family violence every year - but only 1 in 3 have access to paid family violence leave. HSA is calling on the Federal Government to make 10 days of paid family violence part of the National Employment Standards. No worker should have to choose between holding down a job and keeping themselves and their families safe. ... As Hair and Beauty workers, we form relationships with our clients, and they feel they can trust us with problems in their lives -- including family violence or relationship issues they may be experiencing. That's why HSA is taking part in the '16 Days of Action', where we'll be educating our members and ambassadors on how to identify and best respond to family violence. If this is something that affects you at work and you need help, HSA is here. Send us a PM or reach out at: https://loom.ly/UZDuggA And if you want to support the campaign to introduce paid family violence leave for all Australian workers, you can sign the petition at: https://loom.ly/a3xuCVg

13.01.2022 The Government estimates that 140,000 apprentices across Australia have lost their jobs due to COVID-19. Their plan to subsidise 50% of an apprentice's wages for the first 12 months will apparently create 100,000 new apprenticeships, but it doesn't do anything for apprentices who have lost their jobs, or who are working right now. The current funding model rewards bad behaviour, and leaves those employers who are trying to do the right thing high and dry. That's why HSA be...lieves that the new subsidy should be extended to fund ALL apprentices, not just new first-years, to look after the young apprentices who are in work, and the employers who investing their own time and money into the next generation of hair stylists. Research shows that government money invested in apprenticeships easily pays for itself with more qualified, professional tradespeople earning money and paying taxes into the Australian economy. So let's support apprentices AND salon owners and invest in the future of our industry. Will you join our campaign? Show your support, and sign the petition here! https://loom.ly/Tqq6OQY

11.01.2022 Hair apprentices are amongst the lowest-paid workers in Australia. They also face some of the highest levels of exploitation, in the form of underpayments, bullying, inadequate training, and constructive dismissals. Financial support for employers taking on apprentices is heavily geared towards the first 12 months of an apprenticeship. This model effectively encourages the systemic churn and burn in the industry. The Federal Government's new subsidies will do nothing to fi...x this. In order to reduce the churn and help apprentices, we need a system that continues to financial support employers for the duration of an apprenticeship, not just the first 12 months. That's why we're calling on the government to fix the broken funding model and give apprentice the support they need. Are you with us? You can support the campaign and sign the petition here: https://loom.ly/Tqq6OQY

11.01.2022 It's getting close to Christmas! For us, that means long hours and extra days. If you're working overtime, make sure you're getting your rightful 150% or 200% penalty rates!! If you're permanent, that means any hours above what's in your contract is considered overtime. And if you're a casual worker, then overtime kicks in if you work more than 38 hours in a week, OR 10.5 hours in one day. (This is on top of your 25% casual loading )... What about time in lieu? If your contract gives you time off instead of overtime, then it MUST be equivalent to the payment you would have received. For example, if you worked 2 hours overtime, then you're entitled to 3 hours time off. If you've got any questions about overtime, or you're not sure you're getting paid correctly, we can help!! Send us a PM or sign up to get started with HSA here: https://loom.ly/ewi6ns8

09.01.2022 PwC estimates that wage theft costs Australian workers over 1.3 BILLION dollars each year. Wage theft is especially common in industries like retail, hospitality - and hair and beauty, too. These are some of the lowest-paid workers in Australia, who can't afford to lose their rightful entitlements. Both VIC and QLD have recently passed laws criminalising wage theft, which is a great start. But it shouldn't end there. Deliberately stealing wages from employees should be ...a crime in EVERY state. Have you signed our petition yet? Head on over and support our campaign: https://loom.ly/GzhX1_Q

09.01.2022 Are you eligible for Tool Allowance? If you're not given all the tools necessary to do your job (usually scissors), then you're entitled to $8.99 per week! This is the rule for ALL workers under the Hair and Beauty Award, including barbers and apprentices! ... So if you need to use your own scissors at work, and you're not getting tool allowance, get in touch with HSA, and we can work with you to put it right. Plus, we can help with any other issues you might have, like unpaid penalty rates or superannuation, bullying at work, or anything that's not right in your salon. 08.01.2022 Exciting news - 'Women of Steel' is finally coming to Aussie screens! This documentary tells the story of a group of women in Wollongong, who fought for the right to work alongside men at the Port Kembla Steelworks. Their 14-year campaign literally changed the laws for working women in Australia. This is a movie that's really special to HSA. Not just because it's a huge victory for women's rights, but because we're also part of the union that stood behind the 'Women of... Steel' in the 1980s! Throughout November and December, cinemas in Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and Hobart are holding special screenings. You can check out the trailer and book tickets here: https://loom.ly/nhTkbVQ

08.01.2022 The vast majority of Hair + Beauty employees work under the Award - but how many of us can confidently say we really understand it ? Industry Awards (including the Hair and Beauty Award) are legalistic and complex, and this can lead to some misinterpretation from both staff and employers! Last weekend, we posted about your entitlements to Tool Allowance, and a lot of people had different views on what the Award actually said. HSA checked personally with senior staff at the ...Fair Work Ombudsman, who confirmed our reading is correct: if you're not supplied tools in your salon, you must be paid an allowance - and this does include scissors! At HSA, we have qualified professional legal officers on hand with heaps of experience in awards, employment and industrial law, but we know a lot of small businesses aren't so lucky. That's why we've made a submission to the Fair Work Commission supporting simplifying the language of the Award, but still retaining all the current conditions and entitlements that are already in place! If you're curious to see what we've proposed, you can read our submission online here! https://loom.ly/wP0jzkM And if you do have questions about your entitlements, or if there are parts of the Award you don't understand, HSA is here to help employees and employers! 08.01.2022 Since HSA started, we have helped HUNDREDS of hair and beauty workers across Australia with stolen wages, unfair dismissals, unsafe workplaces, bullying, unpaid entitlements and SO much more. Our members are all unique, but they have one thing in common - they stood up and said enough is enough. You have the RIGHT to your Award wages, workplace entitlements, a safe salon, and protection from bullying and harassment. ... If things aren't right in your salon, you NEED to speak up! HSA, we can give you legal advice and industrial support, but it's up to you take that first step. We spoke to our ambassador, Joel, about why it's so important to speak up if something's not right at work. You can read the story here: https://loom.ly/yMYtKPc And if you're ready to get started, HSA is here to help! Check us out right here https://loom.ly/RPBdIXQ

07.01.2022 The SA Government has introduced new restrictions following an outbreak of coronavirus in Adelaide. If you're a hairdresser, beauty therapist, nail salon worker, tattooist, or any worker in personal care services, you MUST wear a mask for 2 weeks as part of the new COVID-19 restrictions. Your employer has an obligation under the Work Health and Safety Act to provide you with PPE you need at work, ESPECIALLY when you can't socially distance. This includes products you nee...d to keep your worksite clean, like sanitiser, too. If you're worried about your health at work, if you're not getting the PPE you need to stay safe, or you think there's something not right, and you need help, reach out to us! 06.01.2022 Two years ago today, our HSA ambassador Nicole's Hair Design appeared on A Current Affair! Nicole talked about her experience as a rent-a-chair worker, and her story is still something we hear way too often at HSA. Sham contracting is rife within our industry, and unfortunately, in the two years since this episode of A Current Affair, things haven't got much better. If you're a rent-a-chair, sole-trader, or independent contractor, you do have rights. So if something doesn't seem right, HSA is here to help! Send us an inbox or check out our web stories on what to look out for in your rent-a-chair agreement: https://loom.ly/mwa0kVc

04.01.2022 Because we're an industry dominated by women, parental leave is especially important to hair + beauty workers. We get inboxes ALL the time from supporters and members about parental leave - how much you should get, who's eligible, and who pays for it. There's a lot of misinformation out there, so we thought it's time to get the facts straight. Check out the myths on paid parental leave and what you need to know, here https://loom.ly/Gk1HBhk

03.01.2022 The Government's apprentice subsidy program is supposed to help create 100,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships across the country. All new apprentices and trainees will now receive a 50% wage subsidy paid out to their employer - but only for 12 months. Funding apprentices only for their first year will not solve the problem. We already see a massive 'churn and burn' in the industry, where employers take an apprentice on to receive a subsidy, only to let them go once t...he money dries up. Salon owners who do the right thing deserve ongoing support in these tough times, we need to reward employers and apprentices who stick out the full 3 years. This new program will only encourage further exploitation of the system. The ABC's Isobel Roe recently talked to a number of industry leaders who had similar concerns. You can listen to the full story here: https://loom.ly/P3xwds8 If you've got any questions about your apprenticeship, HSA is happy to help! Send us a PM or get started here: https://loom.ly/hizJEWw

01.01.2022 If you're a sole trader, rent-a-chair worker or independent contractor, we know you have unique challenges and issues in the industry. It can be confusing to know where to go if you need help, as you're not quite an employee, but usually not an employer, either. And that's where HSA comes in! We've helped heaps of sole traders across Australia with professional advice and support on contracts and agreements, financial support, workplace disputes, and legal rights. Ch...eck out our blog posts with lots of info you need to know here! https://loom.ly/8xJ_Mns And if you need some extra help or one-on-one advice, we've got you covered! 01.01.2022 The South Australian Government has announced a 6-day 'circuit breaker' lockdown across the state to help stop the spread of COVID-19. This lockdown takes effect at 12:01am Thursday, 19 November 2020. With all retail except supermarkets closing, hair and beauty services should NOT operate for the next 6 days. People can only leave their homes to go to the supermarket for essentials, for medical services, or in an emergency situation. Our hearts go out to everyone in SA. S...tay safe, wash your hands, and if you have any questions about work, your rights, JobKeeper, or other workplace entitlements, we're here to help.
