18.01.2022 Hi everyone, I’m often asked by many clients a number of hair questions which I often think! I thought everyone knew that? But then realise that what I think is common Hair knowledge is not so common to most people, it’s only after many years in this industry that I’ve accumulated this wealth of information. I then thought as I discuss some of these issues with my clients daily, I should write about them. One common question I’m asked is Why does my colour fade? There isn...’t an easy answer to that question. But here are helpful hints which may put some light on this subject. Firstly like the old saying says, you get what you pay for! There are a million colour products out there, some much better than others, make a point asking your Hairdresser what colour range they use in the salon. I personally believe that true organic colours are not only better for the environment and us to work with but actually result in great colours that last. Now for the boring tech stuff. Hair consists of three layers CUTICLE, CORTEX and finally the MEDULLA. The process is the colour mixed with the developer excite the cuticle into opening allowing penetration into the cortex and medulla. The tricky part is some people with very fine hair often have no Medulla or it’s found in small quantities. In simple terms the Medulla is where colour needs to penetrate in order for colour to last. Let’s state a fact, you are in the majority, most people have fine hair, why do we often see salons advertising themselves as fine hair specialists, think about, very clever, I wish I had thought of it myself earlier in my Career. What you need to know when having a colour service...... 1) Choose a shade at least half a shade darker allowing for fading and better penetration 2) Don’t wash your hair for at least 48hours after having your colour service, allowing the cuticle to close naturally and lock colour in 3) Avoid over washing your hair and stay away from using styling products too frequently such as gels,mousses,hairsprays, these are high in alcohol and will fade and strip your colour 4) Most shampoos in the market consists of high levels of soap suds, that’s why they foam up making you feel your hair is really getting clean, unfortunately all it’s doing is washing dollar after dollar you’ve spent on your colour down the sink.
