25.01.2022 Who doesn't love some stretches that you can literally do lying down? Last week I spoke briefly about the muscles that can affect our lower back. These three muscle groups attach in or around the pelvis and work alongside movements of the hip as well as the knee. These are three simple stretches to release:... 1. Hamstrings (back of your thigh) 2. TFL (Tensor Fascia Latae which attaches to your ITB Band) 3. Adductors. Next week I'll cover hip flexors, quads and calves. And then...in the next series of snap shot videos I'll show you how to get more from your stretch using rollers and myofascial balls!

24.01.2022 - O n t h e B l o g - The top 3 questions I get asked or hear as a trained Pregnancy Massage Therapist, answered: 1. Can I have a massage in my first trimester?... 2. Can I lay on my tummy? 3. How do I know if someone is qualified? See more

24.01.2022 The Pelvic Floor Release is one of my favourite moves and I often incorporate these into Pregnancy Massage appointments as a tool and technique my Pregnant members can take home and practice with their partners! We often also refer to it as Shaking the Apple Tree! This is a great one to do in the lead up to labour but also in labour to help make space for the baby and loosen up the ligaments and muscles that attach in and support the pelvis, including the pelvic floor!... Thank you The Birth Collective for this awesome video! https://www.facebook.com/thebirthcollectiveau/videos/189362312283105/UzpfSTE1NDk5ODU2MDg1NTQ4ODE6MjczNDI3MjEyNjc5Mjg4NA/

24.01.2022 I'm so grateful for the Mums-to-be who trust me to support them on their journey. What makes it all the more rewarding is getting that message announcing the arrival of their new baby It brings me such joy everytime. Another girl born over the last week to one of my beautiful mummas which makes that 6 girls and 2 boys with a many more babies ready to make their entrance in the coming days and weeks (which includes three known girls and one little man)!... Did you find out if you were having a boy or a girl?

24.01.2022 Ive been talking a bit about posture and sharing some easy movement options you can do if you are stuck in the same position for a long period of time or repeatedly. One important thing to remember or that I hope you take away is knowing that our bodies ARE meant to move, so any position we are staying in for prolonged periods of time are going to create discomfort.

23.01.2022 NEW BLOG Im very privileged that I get to work with lots of women during their pregnancy and into their final weeks before their new baby arrives. I enjoy hearing about their birth preferences and what their hopes are alongside their preparation. Having two completely different birth experiences of my own and supporting Mothers in preparation through pregnancy movement and mobility, I often get asked about how I planned and prepared for our positive birth second time around.... So here are my top 7 tips!

23.01.2022 Last Friday was our first Pregnancy and Postpartum Circle and it was an honour to hold space for four incredible women. A common theme that is raised so often and at this circle was no exception, is about 'the village' and more commonly, the lack of! The village that not only helps raise a baby but also raise and support a Mum. Our next circle is being held on the 4th September and will focus on this very important aspect. What is this village and how can we build ours!... Spaces are limited so we can also create a safe supportive network. Please reserve your place via the booking link in the event.

22.01.2022 Preparing for a Gentle Postpartum - Launching August 2020 A birth plan is one of the most important things that we create when preparing for our baby to arrive. Defining how and what our birth preferences are to help set you up for an empowering and positive birth experience. But what happens next? ... When a baby is born, so is a mother, and it makes me wonder, where is our plan? Where are our preferences, our support networks to help set us up for success? I'm so very excited to announce the birth of my new baby - Preparing for a Gentle Postpartum. A series of FREE monthly pregnancy and post partum circles to help support you to plan and live a gentle postpartum. These sessions will be help in person (woohoo) the FIRST FRIDAY of the month. Keep an eye out for the first event that will be released soon. Covering things such as understanding baby brain, how to find joy, tap into our intuition especially as first time parents and realistic expectations of motherhood. So if you are pregnant, recently had a baby or know someone who is/has, comment "I'm keen jellybean" or tag in your Mumma friends to help provide them with a safe support network.

21.01.2022 This is a question I have been asked a few times, so I thought Id help explain more about a remedial massage. A remedial massage can be both deep tissue work or more superficial myofascial work at a lighter pressure. When we actively feel tension in our bodies, its not uncommon that these areas feel tender during a massage. Quite often we find ‘trigger points’ which are points in the muscle where tension builds and restricts the strength and movement of that muscle. When we ...apply pressure to these they may feel tender, the area may just feel tight, or they may radiate a temporary sensation maybe a stingy or possibly dull ache, either locally (when pressure is being applied) or maybe you feel the ache in a different area. A good example of this is headaches (tension). Quite often when muscles in the neck are being released and we apply pressure to a trigger point, they can radiate to the jaw, top of the head or possibly forehead! So whilst you may present with a headache, the tension and cause is actually in your neck! With a small amount of pressure applied to these areas for a short period of time (60 seconds) this tenderness starts to dissipate as we release the toxins from the muscle and encourage fresh healthy blood flow. It’s important to remember that everyone responds differently to a remedial massage and I will always work at a pressure that you are comfortable with, especially if it’s your first remedial appointment.

21.01.2022 Hip Flexor Release This is one of my favourite stretches/releases to with my pregnancy clients. This side lying hip flexor release helps to stretch and release the illio psoas, iliac crest and round ligaments.... We hold it for about 3 minutes (but we can start with three breaths). This move is part of the pregnancy support protocol for Optimal Maternal Positioning. It becomes part of the pregnancy massage and one that I teach my Pregnant Mums to do at home every day where possible in the lead up to their birth alongside some other great moves to increase movement and mobility of the pelvis. As a remedial client, I use this for increase hip mobility as well as releasing tight hip flexors. The difference is, we look for a fluid movement as we move the leg backwards and then gentle move it forward taking your knee back towards your chest. 20.01.2022 Tight and tense shoulders can often go hand in hand with tight neck and believe it or not misaligned hips! If you are feeling tight in the shoulders and find yourself rolling your shoulders forward, whether it be from long periods at the laptop, your new pregnancy posture, feeding a bubba or even laying on the couch catching up on new Netflix series heres 6 simple stretches for helping get those muscles in the shoulder structure more mobile. Hold all these positions at the... stretch for about 30 seconds and repeat on the other side, except thread the needle. Hold this one at the stretch for a few seconds and repeat before moving to the other side. You can also incorporate the neck stretches from last week and I'll be moving down the body over the coming weeks to show you ones to help with lower back and hip mobility too! Stretching and strengthening helps to improve posture over time, it also helps to lengthen tight muscles and increase your ability to work within a normal range of motion. Stretches shouldnt hurt, do not go past the point of pain. If you are experiencing pain, please see a manual therapist or come and see me at The Studio. If you need more help or have any please dont hesitate to reach out!

20.01.2022 Banana Tea! If you have been here for a while you know I quite enjoy exploring different alternatives for reducing our waste and finding low tox options AND I love plants (indoor and outdoor). I shared this on instagram a couple of months ago and had to share to confirm - it works.... With two kids in the house its fair to say we go through lots of bananas. Whilst I often bury the skin into the soil around our fruit trees or plants that are prone to aphids I wanted to try something different so I placed a couple of banana skins into a jar and poured over boiled water. I left it for a couple of days to brew (covered) and then poured this mineral-rich mixture into the soil of my plants...specifically my citrus trees. The added potassium and phosphorus give our plants a boost to keep them growing strong. You wont believe it...my little dwarf lime has tripled its leaf growth! Our lemon tree has also sprouted lots of fresh leaves and flowers and even a neglected orange tree I got from our buy nothing page has thrown out lots of new growth. I then chop up the soaked skins and pop into our little worm farm as green waste. I do this every few weeks now and have also been using them on some of my indoor plants and they are all looking pretty good I must say! But there will always been more bananas so I'm keen to try banana skin bacon or banana "pulled pork" I also read that Banana peels are good for cleaning your indoor plants apparently (use the inside soft bit) to remove dust. Banana tea for human consumption is actually a thing - a natural sleep remedy! And.. I did not realise how common it is to use banana for skin irritations (but bites and other irritations). Very interesting.

20.01.2022 The first Mothers Circle Event is up and I thought it would be fitting to call it Dear 2020, because its definitely been a year! There have been many that have fallen pregnant, or birthed their babies during the restrictions in Perth and I think its important to reflect on our experiences as Mothers and Mothers to be. For many this experience many may not have been part of the original plan, and yet for others it may have been the quieter experience they needed. However it m...ay have happened for you, we invite you to share your experience. My purpose with these circles is to create a safe and nurturing space for you to come and share what is on your mind and connect with like minded Mothers. No competition, no comparison. Check the events tab for the first three events which have all been released.

19.01.2022 It has been a crazy few months for us as we, like many others, are navigating a new normal so my apologies for my lack of interaction here. I have had one of the busiest months in the massage side of my business ever, and also officially launched my pregnancy and postpartum circles (kicking off on the 7th August). The last two days we have spent time as a family reconnecting with the things that bring us joy and getting out in nature... even dipped our toes in at the beach!... And in the interest of keeping it real, I had my first 8 hours of sleep IN A ROW for the first time in about 2 years I felt like a new woman until we walked 7kms today with two kids How are YOU? X

19.01.2022 Do you have a favourite Christmas recipe? These are a family favourite that I used to make with my Mum as a kid, and now I make them with Mila. We call them Cherry, Chocolate Chews which is exactly what they are - chewy bites of cherries and chocolate rolled with condensed milk and coconut!

18.01.2022 Everyone is so good at holding the baby... but who holds the mother? Parenting can be isolating and it can be lonely; add in a pandemic and our villages have almost been taken away from us. Our first Mothers circle is on the 7th of August and I'm looking forward to helping support Perth Mums wherever they currently are on their pregnancy or postpartum journey.... This isn't your typical Mother group sessions. These sessions are all about YOU! And yes we'll talk about our babies but the focus is more on YOU the Mum... ....whaaaat? I know right.... It's about: The transition YOU are going through. The support YOU need. Your joy YOU want to find. The decisions YOU want to make. Becoming a Mother is one of the biggest transitions we go through, and this happens every time we have another baby. Planning your postpartum period is a way to help bring you joy, set expectations and have some of those conversations we hadn't thought of so that when you're in the depth of sleep deprivation, or learning to bond with your baby, you don't need to try and figure it out. Details in the events tab and below in the comments x

18.01.2022 Wiggle your toes!! Did you know that wiggling your toes when you are feeling uncomfortable or tense can be just enough of a trick to help distract you or relax you? This works a treat whether you are having a chiropractic adjustment, getting a trigger point released or even having a cervical check (because we all know how awkward and uncomfortable they are too).... So next time you are struggling to relax in a similar situation, try...wiggling your toes!

16.01.2022 I've been talking a bit about posture and sharing some easy movement options you can do if you are stuck in the same position for a long period of time or repeatedly. One important thing to remember or that I hope you take away is knowing that our bodies ARE meant to move, so any position we are staying in for prolonged periods of time are going to create discomfort.

16.01.2022 Hamstrings are a common place people find tricky to release off. Some people dont often feel the stretch alone and some dont feel the release with a foam roller. But did you know you can use a similar technique together. Its referred to as a Pin & Stretch" in which we PIN down a place in the muscle where we are feeling the tension and then move it into a stretch position. Pretty cool hey! So if you are feeling like you cant release tight hamstrings, give this a go.... Tips - Find a chair that has a firm surface and doesnt dip. Place the ball where ever you are feeling the tension. Start at the top of the muscle (towards your bottom) and then move downwards towards the knee. Where you place the ball, the stretch will occur between that point and the knee. Repeat on both legs. Tight hamstrings can lead to lower back pain so if you are experiencing back pain please dont hesitate to reach out and we can find you an appointment! Quadraceps work against the hamstrings so give some love to those as well. You might find these are tender to release and need to be strengtened especially if you are often in a seated position.

13.01.2022 Perfect weather to rug up in front of a movie and devour some Peanut Butter Slice! Nom nom nom.... https://themerrymakersisters.com/low-fructose-vegan-salted/

12.01.2022 Which one are you? After years of being a massage therapist and getting massages funnily enough I still get tangled! ut I think it's also because I'm trying to get ready and on the table too fast

11.01.2022 Have you ever had your forearms massaged? I don't mean that you literally come in and we massage your forearms for an hour, but have you had them released as part of your massage? Whilst you may be wondering why, and thinking but they aren't sore... think to yourself... How often do you use your hands and bend your arms at the elbow!? ... - Are you a Mum often carry little ones around? - Do you spend lots of time typing on your phone or your laptop? - Do you grip tightly on your bike handlebars? - Do you have a favourite beer/wine drinking arm? As with our necks and backs, when we spend prolonged periods in the same position it can cause our muscles to either tighten and become sore, or lengthen (outstretch) and weakened, also becoming sore. This massage is usually followed up with "I had no idea that would be so sore/tight" followed by a sensation of lightness you never realised you were missing! If you have started to poke around at your forearm to check how its feeling and find some tender spots, simple grab a hard ball and place it on the table, simply place your forearm over the ball and gentle roll. Alas if its part of a bigger picture - neck pain, shoulder pain, general postural changes, feel free to give us a call or click the book now button :)

11.01.2022 I have had so many beautiful people come into the studio over the last few months. Each in their own uniqueness, experiences and stories. It made me really appreciate the huge step it can be for someone to attend that first appointment and I hope you find comfort knowing I completely understand. I understand that coming in for a massage as a new member, it can be confronting and exposes your vulnerability. It's not every day you literally put your body in someone else's hands.... I understand we all have parts of our bodies we aren't comfortable with and that's ok. I'm not looking at them in that way. I understand that everyone has different pain thresholds, different areas that are more tender and that's ok. I work to your comfort level. I understand that sometimes making that first phone call, clicking that Book Now button or sending a message is a huge step for many, especially if you have been experiencing pain for a really long time. I appreciate that step. I understand sometimes, the last thing on our mind is shaving our legs, and that's ok, I didnt even notice (and as a parent, I appreciate saying 'sorry about my leg hair' sometimes just rolls off the tongue!) So please know I do understand and hope that I can make you feel as comfortable as possible so you can really start to understand how good your body is designed to feel

10.01.2022 Who doesnt love some stretches that you can literally do lying down? Last week I spoke briefly about the muscles that can affect our lower back. These three muscle groups attach in or around the pelvis and work alongside movements of the hip as well as the knee. These are three simple stretches to release:... 1. Hamstrings (back of your thigh) 2. TFL (Tensor Fascia Latae which attaches to your ITB Band) 3. Adductors. Next week Ill cover hip flexors, quads and calves. And then...in the next series of snap shot videos Ill show you how to get more from your stretch using rollers and myofascial balls!

10.01.2022 A new week and time for some new stretches, this time to support our lower backs. There are so many I can do for this area so I have picked a couple with a focus through the lower back, abdominals and glutes muscles. Next video I will work through the TFL, Hamstrings, adductors and quads; other muscles and muscle groups that also can affect the lower back. Once again these exercises should be used to the point where you feel the stretch but should not cause pain. If you are f...eeling pain please stop and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Any acute injuries, please avoid as well! Repeat on each side and hold the stretch for 1 - 3 minutes. 1. Knee to chest 2. Piriformis Stretch 3. Bridging (ensure you keep your back straight) 4. Seated twist. 5. and finish up with either a stretch for the lower back - Childs pose, or Cobra pose for more of a stretch through your abdominals! Enjoy. If you are feeling like you need any support to release off your tight muscles and assess your posture please don't hesitate to reach out. Only one space available this week in the Studio for your remedial or pregnancy massage!

09.01.2022 Oh hi! It's been a little since I have posted on here so thought with some new followers joining the page what a good time to reintroduce myself and thank you for being here! So hi, I'm Donna.... Im a Remedial and Pregnancy Massage Therapist and Post Natal Doula. I work out of The Spine Studio in Warwick alongside a fantastic group of like minded Holistic Practitioners. I'm excited to also be introducing some exciting new things later in the year. Heres some fun facts about me: - I used to work in corporate for a good 10 years prior to working in massage. High waisted skirts, pointy toe high heels, carrying around important business documents in a binder saying things like "so let's circle back" during meetings... all that jazz! - I have two strong minded daughters which I love as much as it challenges me, mainly because it challenges me. - I have about 45 indoor plants - I'm relatively introverted. Big group settings, live videos, don't even get me started on meeting a friend at a 'new cafe' and making sure I know where I'm going... but a few wines under my belt and you'll find me lining up some Salt N Pepper at karaoke! - I became a RMT for a few reason but the rehabilitation side of OH&S intrigued me during my HR career. I qualified in Pregnancy Massage based on my own experiences during my pregnancy and the lack of understanding of complex pregnancy conditions out there. - I became a PP doula because of the massive gap between societal pressures and lack of support after my first birth. It was traumatic and I suffered Postnatal Anxiety. - I'm so grateful that my business has been established and built primarily on referrals and recommendations and for that I truely thank you for sprooking my name in fb groups and to your friends and family. ..... Id love to know about you. Who are you? Or maybe what brings you here?

09.01.2022 Have you heard of Pelvic Girdle Pain? (PGP) About 20% of pregnant women will suffer from PGP in their pregnancy. PGP is described as pain in the pelvic joints commonly between the gluteal fold and iliac Crest, and the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) (on the back of the pelvis).... From a symptom perspective it can feel like: a clicking, grinding; or locking sensation in the pelvic joints. It can also radiate pain in the: front or back of the pelvis, the glute (butt) muscles; and to the groin area. This pelvic pain can occur due to changes in our posture increased pressure on the pelvis due to the growth of the baby the release of relaxin which helps to soften the ligaments that support the pelvis. Did you suffer from PGP, or are you currently? What did you find helped reduce the discomfort? Share below

06.01.2022 Do you have a Shakti Mat or are considering getting one? I often get asked about these and what I think so I thought I'd share my thoughts here! So for those that are wondering what I'm referring to, The Shakti Mat is an accupressure mat that has thousands of sharp spikes that apply pressure to your skin and your muscles. Sounds fun doesnt it! When I got one, my husband actually laughed at me and wondered if I'd be able to do it! ... Two years on, personally, for me, I love it. My work is labor intensive and parenting is often a full contact sport, so it's a great way for me to wind down of an evening and release tension in my body. After the initial thoughts of feeling uncomfortable, you begin to feel your body heat up as the blood starts flowing through your muscles, and then bliss...your body just begins to really relax and you feel the tension begin to float away; and you may even fall asleep! This is one of the most common ways I use it. Simply laying on it. I use it on the floor or on my bed (which is a bit softer). We also have the smaller cushion that is easily placed under the neck, but if you don't you can roll a towel up and place it under the normal mat. Ideally, you want to be wearing a lot less clothing but obviously I'm not going to do that here or start by placing a thin sheet over the mat to get used to it. Have you got one or been curious about one?

06.01.2022 Its good to be back! Ps: not going to lie...I totally missed my plants too!

06.01.2022 Im so grateful for the Mums-to-be who trust me to support them on their journey.

05.01.2022 Alongside the neck and shoulders, the upper region of our backs and also our pectorial muscles (chest) can suffer as well. Whilst our shoulders sometimes feel like they are an assessory hanging from our ears (because we raise them up) our upper back muscles can ache and become weakened by constantly being in a stretched or lengthen position. As a result these muscles can feel sore; but counteracting that is our pec muscles in the front which are being shortened from rolling... in at our shoulders and as a result becoming sore and tight. Yry these simple stretches and movements to help release tension, get your body moving and stretch out those sore and tight muscles. They work a treat in conjunction with the neck and shoulder stretches. If you have been following on these posts I would love to know if you have been able to recognise your posture? Have you been getting up and going for a walk, doing some moves to counteract that posture or are you reading this post whilst your shoulders are rolled in, your chin has dropped forward and your upper back is arched? 1. Interlock your hands, sit up straight and raise your hands above your head. 2. Seated twist 3. Cat and Cow 4. Cobra post 5. Passive bend back aka towel stretch

05.01.2022 Hamstrings are a common place people find tricky to release off. Some people don't often feel the stretch alone and some don't feel the release with a foam roller. It's referred to as a 'Pin & Stretch" in which we PIN down a place in the muscle where we are feeling the tension and then move it into a stretch position. Pretty cool hey! So if you are feeling like you can't release tight hamstrings, give this a go.... Tips - Find a chair that has a firm surface and doesnt dip. Place the ball where ever you are feeling the tension. Start at the 'top' of the muscle (towards your bottom) and then move downwards towards the knee. Where you place the ball, the stretch will occur between that point and the knee. Repeat on both legs. Tight hamstrings can lead to lower back pain so if you are experiencing back pain please don't hesitate to reach out and we can find you an appointment! Quadraceps work against the hamstrings so give some love to those as well. You might find these are tender to release and need to be strengtened especially if you are often in a seated position.

02.01.2022 Do you take note of what your kids say? I've been writing down some of those crazy and creative things that Mila has been saying since she could talk (so for 3ish years) and I have finally put them all in one book from the random pieces of paper and notes on my phone! For those that don't know her, this kid can talk under water, like barely takes a breath but in between some of the random daily conversations theres things like this:... The inappropriate ones: - when she openly told me and my husband to stop being dildos and thought she made that word up! - or when she mimicked me saying 'oh gosh' when her sister fell over and then said...I can say oh gosh but I can't say shit. The curious: - when she said she can't wait to be an adult because she hasn't been one before. And the down right cute: - she has recently created the term "cuddle rubber" which means that you rub your arms and make a warm cuddle and then you throw it to the person you want to give a cuddle! "Its for times when theres a sickness and you can't hug your friends." Do you take a note of the crazy and wonderful things your kids or grandkids say?

01.01.2022 Finishing up this series of simple stretches with part 2 of the lower legs. 1. Calf stretches. Our calf muscles are often neglected as we move beyond them and focus more on our hamstrings or quadriceps when stretching or feeling tension. Tightness or pain in the calves can often be the result of overuse. Activities like running and playing sports can be hard on your calf muscles; but so can wearing high heels, that puts our calves in a shortened position.... 2. Quad stretch. Tight quads can pull the pelvis forward which, in turn, may accentuate the lordotic curve in your low back. When it becomes excessive, this is when back troubles may set in. If you dont feel the stretch in this position or you are too unstable, simple stand on one leg and take your ankle behind to the bottom. 3. Hip Flexors. Hip flexors includes the psoas and the iliacus muscles, alongside the TFL and a couple of other muscles that create the hip flexor group. When our hip flexors are tight we can often feel an ache in our lower back, difficulty standing up straight and pain in the glutes. Heres a great stretch you can do, in conjunction with the TFL stretch from last week.
