25.01.2022 Proud Parents 2: Crested Terns, colloquially known as Elvis Presley birds because of their gorgeous quiff, shield their 3 day old chick from neighbouring birds. These terns often nest in low dunes close to the beach at the Houtman Abrolhos. See more images in the book Houtman Abrolhos: A Natural History online at https://www.halfmoonbiosciences.com/shop-1/

25.01.2022 ABC followed the rescue and release of Lesser Noddies recently, thanks to John Fithardinge and WA Seabird Rescue.

24.01.2022 A lovely writeup from the Guardian on the HACN new info poster on Pelsaert Island, produced mostly by Virginie Carbonnato. For more info see site link below or by the Houtman Abrolhos book here; https://www.halfmoonbiosciences.com/shop-1/

24.01.2022 Fledging time. This Bridled Tern youngster contemplating its first big migration, from Pelsaert Island to the Celebes Sea 4000km north. Big ask at just 2 months old.

22.01.2022 Hi Everyone We have started a campaign to raise funds to purchase more trackers to continue our research on Lesser and Brown Noddies at the Houtman Abrolhos. Please feel free to share this link https://www.pozible.com/profile/christopher-surman

22.01.2022 Family time - A Lesser Noddy pair canoodling with their 2d old chick. Lessers mate for life and are found on only 3 islands at the Houtman Abrolhos. Well worth protecting.

20.01.2022 The Research shack in the Pelsaert Group, Houtman Abrolhos. Start of the busy part of the seabird season, good to be home.

20.01.2022 Tracking Noddies- Wading in knee-deep tidal ponds on Pelsaert Island to get to the site of our Lesser Noddy study. This season we had a successful crowdsourcing campaign to purchase GPS trackers. Contact me at [email protected] if you wish to contribute.

18.01.2022 Check out this short video put together by the amazing Samille Mitchell from ABC Midwest Bureau. A brief look at the international significance of the Houtman Abrolhos' seabird colonies. https://www.facebook.com/abcmidwestandwheatbelt/videos/640163630125885/UzpfSTYxNTI3NzQ4NDoxMDE1NzgxNTc3MzI4NzQ4NQ/?q=abc%20midwest&epa=SEARCH_BOX or on youtube... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAQi2_QrAJo See more

17.01.2022 Welcoming committee, 2 Australian Sealions, Bernard (pictured) and Manny, made getting in and out of the shack tricky for nearly 2 days.

17.01.2022 The Ladies- Our first batch of sponsored Lesser Noddies all sitting on eggs. Syb, Leeuwin Current, Daisy and Lucky B. Thanks to our supporters- each received a rare hardcover of Houtman Abrolhos: A Natural History. https://www.halfmoonbiosciences.com/shop-1/

17.01.2022 Mangroves full of chicks! Another research update fresh from the Houtman Abrolhos. A productive early year and significant tracking results from the girls, Syb, Pearlie, Gimloy, Lucky B, Clementine, Squabble, Daisy, Aquarius, Julie and Sally. Big shout out to Ashley Newton, Pia Boschetti @latitudejewellers and our supporters.

16.01.2022 Proud Parents 3: Spot hidden spectacularly amongst the rough coral slabs this Roseate Tern chick, just fed by its parent. Perfectly camouflaged.

16.01.2022 After leaving the burrow, these nocturnal Wedge-tailed Shearwaters are highly vulnerable to spotlights on vessels and camps. Switch off those lights at night to save shearwaters.

14.01.2022 New GPS trackers from PathTrack in the UK. Absolutely gold, 10 of these babies were funded by our Pozible campaign and we are now following Lesser and Brown Noddies at sea. pozible.com/proj/seachange-tracking-nautical-noddys/rewards [email protected]

08.01.2022 A Bridled Tern arriving at my island base at the Abrolhos. After wintering in the Celebes Sea north of the equator, these guys head south 4000km to the Houtman Abrolhos to breed. These secrets are only revealed when the community gets behind projects such as mine. Stay tuned for more...

08.01.2022 This was last years attempt to mitigate shearwater deaths on the massive number of vessels that anchor up for ANZAC Day celebrations at West Wallabi. Up to 30 a night on some of the larger vessels, many of which will never return to breed.

08.01.2022 Proud Parents 4: A fragile, exposed 6 day old Roseate Tern chick, hunkered down and hidden while fully exposed on a coral shore. Above, her parents are divebombing the scientist ! At the abrolhos Roseate Terns, Fairy Terns and Crested Terns are all vulnerable to unwary visitors to their nesting sites.

06.01.2022 Houtman Abrolhos: A Natural History available now at https://www.halfmoonbiosciences.com/shop-1/ and at Latitude Gallery and the Geraldton Museum.

05.01.2022 Manny, as cute as he looks he is blocking the front door. One of the daily hazards and joy's of the Abrolhos.

04.01.2022 New booklet, a Guide to the Birds of the Houtman Abrolhos, hot off the press thanks to Pia at #latitudejewellers and #flotsamandjetsam2021 All major species, map and guide all for $10 from Latitude Gallery or my Halfmoon Biosciences website. Supports our research and protects the islands at the same time!

04.01.2022 Proud Parents 1: Check out the eye I'm getting from this Lesser Noddy, his 21 day old chick sheltered behind.

03.01.2022 It's that time of year, when over a million shearwater chicks prepare to leave the burrow they were raised in and fly for the first time. They are hungry and restless, and in the next month they must prepare for a 4000km journey into the Indian Ocean. In 5 years they too will return to breed. Photo: Chris Surman
