24.01.2022 You can now access the study I conducted into community perceptions of large-scale wind developments on the Hallett Gallery Webpage, as well as the full PDF. I would like to thank the 139 properties in our region who took the time to complete the survey. Community responses to the close proximity of industrial-scale wind developments in Mid-North South Australia.... Felicity J Martin BPsSc -Hons; PostGrad Neuroscience and Psychology of Mental Health, Dip Counselling * Correspondence: Free access to the full research article available as PDF in Downloads Abstract: South Australia is a world leader in renewable energy, particularly on-shore wind, with SA's Mid North hosting a significant proportion of developments. Despite extensive developments, little empirical research has been conducted into broad-based factors contributing to rural community responses. A 75-item survey explores costs and benefits affecting local community perceptions of developments within 12 kilometres. Questions are drawn from Australian and overseas research, and responses in 139 submissions by residents directly affected by wind developments, to the Australian Senate Select Committee Inquiry into Wind Turbines (2015)[1]. The survey was distributed to Mid North SA communities living within 12 km of wind developments. Regression analysis of 127 SA respondents reveals disruptions to traditional rural friendship networks directly and indirectly predicts increases in self-reported stress through loss of valued landscapes, and perceptions of government failures in monitoring for wind development compliance. Significant disruption to accessing regional and local television reception increases self-reported stress. Contrary to expectations, Amirkhan's (2012) Stress Overload Scale (SOS) scores indicate farmers under 55 years tend to report higher stress levels [2]. Other significant contributors to increasing SOS stress scores are perceptions decisions affecting personal assets are made by powerful others, and perceiving government failure in monitoring for wind development compliance. Turbine noise is the strongest factor predicting sleep disruption, while 67% of residents within 5km report hearing noise. SA government development setback guideline of a 1 km for individual homes and 2km for townships may not be sufficient to protect residents, and a minimal 4 km setback is suggested. https://www.google.com/url
24.01.2022 And people wonder why people don't do experimental sleep studies?
23.01.2022 Needless to say at the big creek on Ketchowla even for wheel drives will struggle
23.01.2022 A stunning venue in a beautiful spot, hope one day we will see the Bundaleer weekend again
21.01.2022 There is nothing like the fragrance of buddleias. and the butterflies agree with me..
18.01.2022 A truly remarkable example of authenticity, dedication, intelligence and humanity - deeply missed.
18.01.2022 UNTREATED SCABIES IN DEMENTIA WARD OF WHYALLA NURSING HOME Appalled at this situation, which is apparently quite common in nursing homes according to a study by Cassell et al (2018). Really how can we dare to call ourselves a civilised society when horrible inequities like this are allowed to continue... there should be an open rating system for nursing homes similar to schools, a facebook page where people can share experiences without fear of litigation for genuine concerns, and a regulator who actually goes to homes, not avoiding them while on huge salaries. https://9now.nine.com.au/.../e97a46b3-2ddb-4667-b85f
14.01.2022 As someone who has a family tendency towards the wrong sort of cholesterol, am trying a new regime, one glass of lemon juice a day - reduces triglycerides and LDC, and a super duper new lawnmower... No polluting and carcinogenic Victa fumes, no frustrating time trying to start the job, and easy way of getting over 30 active minutes- recommended for all. A Bosch push/pull mower, even gets through thick kikuyu, and yes I do have a big lawn, still one of the most efficient CO2 removal systems.
13.01.2022 One of my favourite garden inhabitants is Leonardo da Banksia, or Leo for short, once a great artist but now a stockban who likes sitting by a billabong, great mates with Vasco da Llama who is off circumnavigating the world... characters in my story time to the grandchildren, of days of old when knights were bold...
13.01.2022 As I and Bob have a virus thought I'd better do a COVID check Hallett style- go out and smell the roses in the garden, yep, still have a good sense of smell, and feel better already!
12.01.2022 A wonderful photo taken by Francesco Bozzo of Sarah's beautiful Bassett Bella "What?! I wasn't doing nothing!"
12.01.2022 With all the talk of COVID vaccinations we forget what we need now is a much more effective treatment for older people... an Australian company I Mentioned previously, Mesoblast, has teamed with international giant Novartis because of the success of their trials in treating people with moderate to severe COVID - share price expected to explode on ASX this morning. What a pity we didn't as a nation back this innovation and keep profits here
11.01.2022 This is rather clever
10.01.2022 Just a wonderful reminder of the majesty of farming decades ago when towns were abuzz with people
10.01.2022 Disappointed as a registered land agent and someone who had years experience doing realestate floorplans to hear some large realestate companies are using cheap & nasty offshore people to do floorplans. This, instead of paying SA professionals who are accountable and maintain confidentiality. There is an obligation to vendors to ensure their property is accurately represented without significant features left out.... It is not suitable to have someone put it together through Google, photos of rooms etc with no dimensions using freeware. Before listing with any agent, ask where the floorplans are done, turn around and accuracy are then not an issue.
09.01.2022 It's hard to fully comprehend it is over 173 years since my great, great grandparents Francis and Catherine Roskilly Symons made the 88 day long journey via the 'La Belle Alliance' from Cornwall to South Australia. The journey would have been harrowing as they lost the main mast in a storm and had to return to Plymouth for repairs. They became pioneering settlers in the Burra district at Kooringa... this kettle shared the journey with them from Goldsithney, Cornwall.
07.01.2022 A little bit of humour is good for the soul :)
06.01.2022 Ready for summer, frogs have moved in, my little place of mindful listening...
03.01.2022 A wonderful morning, before the heat arrives, after all the lovely rain...plants (and weeds) are loving it... some overachievers is this simple multi-coloured rose, and the entrance to my energy circle, where earth (saltbush) meets air (Hawthorn). In these time going back to a more fanciful period governed by romanticism personally lifts my spirits. Much more than living in high density, energy hungry, urban concrete blocks, where beliefs exist you should not have a garden unless it does not require water, and you shift the ugliness of energy generation to rural landscapes and then claim you are Green - sheesh.

02.01.2022 Parents with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder now have access to a TGA approved new treatment, just approved, Zelira's 'HOPE', which is based on Cannabidiol (CBD). This will now be available through prescription, and in trials has proven efficacious in reducing severe behaviour.
01.01.2022 Mornings and evening are so enjoyable, my labyrinth changes from spring to golden summer colours, and the surrounding Australian natives are gradually growing, making a more spiritual setting for our majestic blue gum, once alone now surrounded by friends.
