22.01.2022 2019 NSW Farmer of the Year

22.01.2022 Farmer of the Year Chris Hall from @hallfamilyorchards on the cover of @nswfarmers Farmer Magazine. Oddly enough this isnt the first time Ive shot at a cherry... orchard just after harvest with no cherries on the trees. This cover shot was the last shot of the day, the lets try something different shot. Chris took a small rest on the recently constructed cherry bed while I fired off his portrait. Chris is passionate about caring for his land and believes in partnering with nature rather than trying to control it. His orchard is herbicide and pesticide free and the soil quality on his property is second to none...the result, amazing cherries @ Hall Family Orchards See more

10.01.2022 Many of our customers often ask what else we grow or farm on our mixed farming enterprise other than Below are pictures of Chris social distancing within his John Deere office. The disc airseeder on the back of the tractor is perfect within orchards to plant cover crops or on broad acre farms such as below to acheive minimal disturbance to the soil in order to preserve moisture and reduce the impact on microbes.... The picture below is a grazing wheat crop near Cootamundra NSW sown 3 weeks ago during dry times. Fingers crossed it gets the forecast for tommorrow. Chris is also busy contract sowing pasture, barley, oats, wheat, canola and mixed species cover crops around the South West Slopes of NSW.

08.01.2022 Multi species cover crops add plant & microbe diversity within our orchard and amazing flowering plants to attract beneficial insects The crop was sown after our cherry harvest in Jan 20 by directly drilling into our fescue & clover pastures between every row. The cover crop consists of sunflowers sorghum, millet, tillage radish, cowpeas, lablab beans & cereral rye... We will now mow it back under the trees to provide a thick mulch layer. #hallfamilyorchards #covercrops #regenerativeagriculture #wombatnsw #nswfarmeroftheyear #regenag #cbrregion #nswcherrygrowers #cherrygrowersaustralia #premiumcherries #soilhealth #carbonfarming #hilltopsregion

07.01.2022 70th NATIONAL CHERRY FESTIVAL Its that time of the year and this years National Cherry Festival - Young will be the biggest and best ever! This week has ...been jam packed with all things cherry as we enjoy the best that this wonderful region has to offer visitors and locals. Ive spent time catching up with the team at family owned Ballinaclash Wines & Fruit, making cherry pies and picking our own from the orchards. At Hall Family Orchards owner Chris Hall gave me the guided tour of their incredible operations and it was impossible not to be impressed with their relentless pursuit of excellence in growing, packaging and customer service - both domestic and international. No wonder they are a finalist in the NSW Farmers Farmer of the Year Competition (fingers crossed ). Today I took the DP to Eastlake's Family Tree orchards for a pick session, tour of the packing sheds where export production is in full swing, and we caught up with owner Tom Eastlake . It was great fun consuming our own body weight in cherries . And this evening I was called upon to officially open the Annual Festival, welcoming thousands to our region. Festival Committee Chair, Caitlin Sheehan and her small team have done an amazing job and can be very proud! The five Cherry King and Queen entrants this year have raised many thousands of dollars for charity. Well done David Munnerley, Laura Ower, Tasmin Coulter, Kate Cruickshank and Brianah Griffin for getting behind the event Its little wonder we are the Cherry Capital of Australia! Its a title the cherry growing community has worked hard for and one which can take great pride in. People may remember that earlier this year I announced $20,000 tourism funding to help the organisers publicise the event. Its been worth the investment and Im proud to have played a small role in the success of the 70th National Cherry Festival! Sx

02.01.2022 2019 FARMER AND YOUNG FARMER OF THE YEAR ANNOUNCED It was a great pleasure to join the Farm Writers' Association of NSW at State Parliament this w...eek to announce the 2019 Farmer and Young Farmer of the Year winners. Its been a tough year for our famers who have been tackling crippling drought and now devastating bushfires. But in the face of all this our two winners have shone through and demonstrated tremendous resilience, innovation and excellence. Congratulations to cherry grower Chris Hall, who took out Farmer of the Year, and dairy farmer Renae Connell, who took out Young Farmer of the Year. Chris runs Hall Family Orchards in southern NSW and has pioneered new ways to partner with nature which has allowed him to farm pesticide and herbicide free for more than two years. Renae is dairy farmer from Dorrigo who has focused on animal health and welfare in order to drive better productivity and profitability. A huge congratulations to the achievements of the other finalists: Lauren Newell from Wingham, Matthew Fenech from Horsley Park and Tim Carroll from Borenore.
