18.01.2022 Salaam my lovelies, today I introduce the Haluna Happy Names 'name of the month' series, which I have been meaning to start since, like, foreverrrrrr. I bring you one Arabic name, how it is written in Arabic and English, what it means, and the pros and cons of choosing the name for a new bundle of joy - for you to share with your DH, or with anyone you know who might like an Arabic name for their baby. Actually, my secret goal is to introduce two names a month. But I don't ...want to over-promise. I want my Arabic name series to be helpful and valuable so they will take a bit of time for me to research - I'm not an expert on Arabic first names (yet ) so we can all learn together. . If you know me personally, you know this first Haluna Happy Names 'name of the month' without swiping for the reveal. It is - written in English as either Hadi or Hady. Here's my darling firstborn son Hadi with me during the summer. In Arabic Hadi is spelt (from right to left) (ha - a soft 'h') - (alif, a long 'a' sound) - (dal - like an English 'd') - (ya - like i or y). . The name comes from one of the Muslim 99 names of the Almighty, 'al-HADI', which means 'the Leader' or 'the Guide'. You may know the name 'Abdulhadi' which means 'servant of the Guide'. The root word is the verb ('hada'), meaning 'to lead someone on the right way' - which also is the root for the word 'hadeeya' that means 'gift' - so all up Hadi is a perfect first name for the series, and a good name for an eldest child - or so we thought, 16 years ago. . If you know colloquial Arabic, you may know 'hadi' to mean 'calm' or 'quiet'. However, the word for quiet has a hamza at the end (written ), pronounced in standard Arabic. (For non-Arabic speakers, a hamza is a glottal stop, like when a person says 'what?' and drops the t at the end of the word). . Hadi is an allover great choice for an Arabic name in English. It is easy to spell and pronounce, and has an inspirational meaning. Cons: 1) sometimes people mishear it as 'Harry'; 2) if you spell it with 'y' they might rhyme it with 'shady'. Do you know a Hadi? What do you think of this name? Please, share in the comments. . See more
