22.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and marks the first day of #16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Each ...year from 25 Nov to 10 Dec, individuals, institutions and organisations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls by raising awareness about gender-based violence and challenging discriminatory attitudes. Events like the 16 Days of Activism are crucial because they shine a spotlight on the issue of violence against women. They are a moment to create public awareness about what needs to change to prevent it from happening in the first place. Everyone in the community, from individuals to institutions, can play a role in changing the norms, practices and structures that lead to, or excuse, gender-based violence. Actions can be as simple as: Educating yourself about the causes and consequences of gender-based violence Making a personal commitment to not condone or accept violence, and to speak up Having conversations with family and friends about the negative impact of violence on individuals and communities Leading a Bible study on gender equality with your family or small group (https://www.unitingworld.org.au/gendertheology/) Using your social media to speak up, let your community know you are there for support, share resources and information; including about available support services in your country. Earlier this year, we worked together with women’s fellowships from our partner churches across the Pacific to develop a series of posters out of messages shared by the Pacific Conference of Churches and United Church in the Solomon Islands. They have also been made into tiles for use on social media (see below), so we’ll be sharing these, as well as what our partners are doing to mark the 16 Days in their communities. Together we can create a world without gender-based violence. #16DaysOfActivism #IDEVAW #16Days

16.01.2022 "What are You Waiting for?" This year I wonder if waiting for light holds as much meaning in the southern hemisphere as it often has in the northern? With a global pandemic wreaking visible and invisible havoc, how will this year draw to a close? How will our ancient life inspiring story be given voice? Four Sundays from 9.30am Waiting! All welcome to join us for COVID Safe creative, physically distanced worship with five singers or none, video reflection music, prayer, story and a gathered community worshipping God as inclusively as we can... Thanks to artist Ben Bell for this image...

14.01.2022 Here’s what inspired our NAIDOC Week Payers last Sunday!

12.01.2022 Thanks for walking the talk David W! Climate justice means not leaving anyone behind! We can map a green future transitioning industry to grow new jobs or we can remain in the dark and let the future just happen to us... stewardship or care for the creation is our calling!

03.01.2022 Walk gently speaking strongly for justice and common sense David!!

02.01.2022 Although the Uniting Church nationally invited us to focus on NAIDOC Week this Sunday I reckon it's too late! I wanted our people to kick off the week and 'get' the context of the radio and TV they've experienced this week and although gathered events were restricted, to be aware of the issues... We shared a UCA Prayer (modified), heard about this years poster, were reminded what's on in Newcastle, through the Museum and Art gallery + Saretta Fielding at Wallsend Library! We ...heard 'The Uluru Statement from the Heart' recitation and the song "Come On Down" from Midnight Oil's 'The Makarraat Project' and we spent time reflecting on'Waiting' and questioned typical renderings of the story of the ten bridesmaids... e.g. What did the Oil represent? Why were the five who prepared, not willing to share it? If it's not boiled down to "Jesus is Coming, Look Busy" then what is the story about... maybe again that Waiting is active, not passive and the Kingdom of God invites our action in loving God and neighbour and in listening to our indigenous brothers and sisters, who as Vincent Lingiari said "know how to wait"...
