25.01.2022 Plan to stay dry: Bag it, Block it, Lift it and Leave Know what to do if your home is being threatened by major flooding via our 'Bag it, Block it, Lift it and Leave' campaign: Bag it - by laying sandbags where water may get into your home.... Block it - by covering your toilet and drains to prevent back-flow Lift-it and Leave - by shifting valuables onto tables and benchtops, and leaving early to a family or friends house on higher ground (which is still ok to do in-line with COVID-19 restrictions). 25.01.2022 Suspect we don't need to tell anyone it has been a little wet lately ! We weren't surprised to get a call out for building damage earlier today - water had come through the roof, and was leaking through the ceiling. After initial assessment, we were able to isolate power and seal entry point from within the ceiling cavity. The temporary repairs should make the area safe and prevent further damage until the home owner can arrange a more permanent fix.... With the BOM predicting more rain in coming weeks and months, now is probably a good time to check roofs, gutters, downpipes and drains to ensure water can escape without causing damage. For more info on how you can be better prepared go to: https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/get-ready

24.01.2022 A crew was out and about this morning to respond to a call for assistance. A sheet of iron had blown off a roof in recent winds, and other sheets had come loose. Remedial works were conducted to replace the sheet and secure others to protect the property and reduce the risk of further damage. For storm and flood emergencies, call 132500, our crews will not be far away.... For medical or life threatening emergencies, call 000. Don’t be concerned if you see us wearing face masks as we drive to scene or respond - we have protocols in place to protect our members and our community. Stay safe !

24.01.2022 Our crews are committed to providing a 24/7 response to our local community. During the week our fleet took advantage of the sun to have a quick look at Nigretta Falls during a maintenance run. If you need assistance from VICSES, call 132 500.

23.01.2022 Over the weekend, four Hamilton Members traveled to Lake Eildon to complete the Land Based Swift Water Rescue Course. Members gained valuable knowledge in hydrology and land based rescue techniques. These techniques were tested in a controlled environment, as members entered the water to learn defensive and offensive swimming, for the purposes of self-rescue. Hamilton SES Unit will soon become only the fourth unit in the South West Region to have land based swift water operat...ors. These new skills, combined with a recent increase in the number of rescue boat operators greatly enhance our capacity to assist our community. If you are interested in finding our more about what we do, or considering becoming a VICSES volunteer, drop us a line, talk to one of our members, or register your interest on the VICSES website https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/ and we will be in touch. As always, for life threatening emergencies, call 000 and for storm or flood emergencies call 132500.

23.01.2022 Due to the nature of COVID-19, in recent times we’d taken a break from face-to-face skills maintenance and training to focus only on responding to emergencies. From this week, you might see us back out undertaking training in small groups to ensure we have the essential skills and capability required to respond to an emergency. Emergency services as a permitted industry are able to conduct critical training and exercising under the directions, as endorsed by the Victorian Ch...ief Health Officer. Our crews are following all the COVIDSafe principles, wearing masks and working hard to ensure we are there for our community. Thank you

23.01.2022 Local crews enhanced their sandbag and water diversion skills as part of preparedness for predicted rainfall in coming months connected to La Nina. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/outlooks/#/rainfall/summary Now is a good time to prepare, by cleaning gutters, drains and downpipes, checking-in on neighbours who could be impacted and thinking about an emergency plan. https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/get-ready/at-home Even the best prepared properties may need assistance in a stor...m or flood emergency. Call 132500 for storm or flood emergencies, or 000 for life threatening situations. Stay safe and stay informed with VicEmergency https://emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/

23.01.2022 Happy Easter from Hamilton SES

21.01.2022 There is a high risk for thunderstorm asthma forecast for the South West Region tomorrow. There is also a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued by the BOM for parts of our response area http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDV21033.shtml and a severe weather warning for damaging winds http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDV21033.shtml . Click on the links above for more info and updated advice. In short, we can expect to experience severe winds and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours whi...ch could also impact people who suffer from asthma and hay-fever. As always, stay informed by monitoring your local conditions, the Vic Emergency App or website https://www.emergency.vic.gov.au/respond/ and Bureau of Meteorology http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/warnings/ website and take appropriate action to minimize any impact on you, your family or your business or property. For more information on how you can be better prepared for an emergency at home or work, go to the VICSES Website: https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/get-ready

21.01.2022 A VERY DANGEROUS THUNDERSTORM warning has been issued by the BOM, for areas including Hamilton, Casterton, Portland and Warrnambool. For the latest warnings go to: http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDV21033.shtml Very Dangerous thunderstorms are likely to produce intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous flash flooding, damaging winds and large hailstones over the next several hours.... Just a few precautions, you may wish to consider: Check and secure loose items, if driving, drive to the conditions, and never drive through floodwater, check drains and gutters, raise valuable items off the floor if you are likely to experience flash flooding, if camping, consider lowering or taking down marquees or annexes - continue to monitor the conditions. CALL 000 for any life threatening situations, and 132500 for flood or storm emergencies.

20.01.2022 Crews have been kept busy in the last couple of days, with early morning call outs for trees over the road in the Cavendish area. At 5am yesterday, and again at 1am this morning, passing motorists reported fallen trees over the road. There was no significant wind, and trees had simply fallen due to previous weather conditions or saturated soil. The tree in this picture simply split and fell, but would have been very difficult for passing motorists to see in the dark and misty... conditions this morning - fortunately, the motorist remained on scene until we arrived, providing essential awareness for the safety of other motorists. With some COVID-19 restrictions easing, this is a timely reminder, not only to drive to the conditions, but be particularly aware when camping to make sure you do not camp under overhanging branches, or near low lying creeks, rivers or streams. Stay aware, stay informed and stay safe.

20.01.2022 This week is National Road Safety Week. We remember those we have lost on our roads and commit to #DriveSoOthersSurvive

20.01.2022 Your Family - Our Family Behind every VICSES volunteer is a support network that helps and enables them to do amazing things to support their community. This weekend 14th and 15th November, we recognize and celebrate the partners, family, friends, employers and work-mates who support our volunteers, and enable them to do what they do to help other families in their community.... We would like to highlight and celebrate the many sacrifices family members, friends and workmates make to support our volunteers. For more detail, and case studies, follow this link: https://www.ses.vic.gov.au//campaig/your-family-our-family Hamilton SES is fortunate to have a red bottle brush in full bloom just outside the unit. I took the opportunity to reduce the weight on the branches, and take a few home for my wife when returning from an early morning call-out earlier this week. A few blooms or a thank-you cannot compensate for all of the days, nights and early mornings interrupted by the SES pager, the missed meals, interrupted family gatherings, the odd-jobs not done around the home or the concern that I will return home safely. Thank-you to all who support SES volunteers!

19.01.2022 One of the reasons we advise you don’t drive, walk or ride through floodwaters is because you can’t see what’s occurring underneath the surface. Here’s a good e...xample of what we mean. This is the Strzelecki Track, a popular route for outback travellers in South Australia. This damage to the road occurred due to the rain and floods up north. So, next time you’re driving and the road is flooded, don’t risk itturn around and find another way or wait for another time to cross. For more tips on how to be prepared for floods, visit our website. https://www.ses.sa.gov.au/site/flood.jsp Photos: SA Infrastructure and Transport

16.01.2022 This week is National Road safety Week, so it was appropriate we had road rescue training earlier this week to maintain our skills and readiness when required for road rescue response. One of our members donated her old, once reliable transport for training. While it would have been hard to watch and participate in, what better final "journey", than to support road safety as a training resource on its way to the wreckers. After training, there was time for one last trip down... memory lane behind the drivers seat. VICSES operates Australia's largest road rescue network, and as such, or volunteers experience the first hand effects of unsafe driving. We ask everyone to make a pledge to drive safely on our roads, because everyone has the right to get home safely.

16.01.2022 BOM have released a severe thunderstorm weather warning which is expected to enter Vic at 8:30pm tonight. For more details please see the official warning on http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDV21033.shtml or by using the VicEmergency App.

15.01.2022 A severe storm crossed the state this afternoon, bringing with it damaging winds. Hamilton experienced wind gusts up to 70km per hour - enough to bring this branch down. Crews quickly set up to protect the scene and clear the tree from the road. This is a good reminder to ALWAYS drive to the conditions, monitor and be aware of your environment, and take care on the roads. While there was little impact in our response area, spare a thought for the crews across the state respon...ding to over 1500 requests for assistance, with that number still increasing. If you are traveling, take care, and stay safe.

14.01.2022 A severe weather warning for damaging winds has been issued for areas including Hamilton. It is associated with a cold front this afternoon. * Check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured and move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * Stay indoors and away from windows. * Stay away from fallen powerlines. Always assume they are live.... * Stay informed monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency. https://reg.bom.gov.au/products/IDV21037.shtml See more

14.01.2022 Thunderstorms are just east and south of us as well as well to our north. None immediately coming our way but they develop quickly. There has been a warning issued for severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, large hail and strong winds, just like yesterday. There is a short time to prepare your property but if there is lightning about, stay inside. https://reg.bom.gov.au/products/IDV21033.shtml

14.01.2022 Nature continues to remind us that we cannot take anything for granted, with a tree falling earlier this evening in reasonably benign conditions. With the potential for more summer rain and storms, it pays to monitor conditions and prepare for a range of emergencies. Experience shows that those who plan and prepare for emergencies can reduce the impact of the emergency, and can recover quicker afterward.... For more information on how you can plan for emergencies and create your own emergency plan, go to: https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/get-ready

14.01.2022 Our volunteers had a mixed bag today. Starting at 7:40am with trees down at Mooralla, with another drive out to Gatum for a tree down over the road, followed by a building damage job in the afternoon. We were fortunate to have assistance from police with traffic management and a farmer who came along and pushed the remainder of the tree off the road at the Mooralla job.... These photos are evidence that the spring storms and rainfall have taken their toll. Catchments are wet and the ground is saturated. One tree simply uprooting in the soft soil. With the potential for more rain and storms to come, we are encouraging everyone to monitor weather, drive to the conditions and be especially aware that trees can fall at any time ... Not just windy days. For more information on how you can be better prepared for storm or flood emergencies, go to https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/get-ready . If you need us for a storm or flood emergency, call 132500, or for life threatening events, call 000.

13.01.2022 Just to prove that trees can fall in any weather conditions ! Crews responded to a tree over the road tonight. Police were already on scene to prevent accidents for unsuspecting motorists. After checking for hazards and protecting our members with strategic vehicle placement, the road was cleared pretty quickly with chainsaw and manual labour. Timely reminder to pay attention to weather and road conditions, stay alert and avoid distractions at all times when driving.

13.01.2022 Thanks to our community. A few weeks ago, before wearing masks in public was compulsory, VICSES volunteers were required to wear masks when multiple members were traveling in VICSES vehicles. We would like to thank Marg who made some reusable masks for us, so that we weren't wasting disposable masks that were in limited supply. Consistent with the DHHS mask guidelines, we were able to utilize some SES shopping bags for the outer layer.... Thanks to Marg and all who continue to support emergency services and other volunteer organizations who contribute to the welfare of their communities. COVID-19 has changed many things for us all, but if you need assistance for life threatening emergencies, call 000 - for storm and flood emergencies, call 132500 and help will not be far away.

13.01.2022 ALL CLEAR - FLASH FLOOD Incident Location: Coleraine Issue Date: Friday 09 October 2020, 06:44 pm Next Update: Saturday 10 October 2020, 06:00 pm... This is a Final Flash Flood Warning for Coleraine. - The immediate threat of flash flooding has passed. - Dangerous hazards including floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees may still be present. 11.01.2022 Hamilton and Balmoral SES units were called to deal with a massive red gum that had fallen over the road at Brit Brit yesterday. The assistance of a local farmer with a tractor was greatly appreciated. 132 500 is the number to call SES for flood and storm damage. If you clear a tree that has fallen over the road, it can save us time if you call 132500 to let us know that it has been cleared.

11.01.2022 It’s not all lights and sirens! Hamilton Rescue 1 just back from weekly service run and given a quick tub, ready for its next outing. It takes a certain level of commitment to make yourself available for emergency response 24/7. Sometimes, you need to turn that up a notch for the essential but relatively mundane readiness activities such as admin, finance, and building, equipment and vehicle maintenance.... Not every SES volunteer will wear orange overalls and jump on a truck, but they all play a part in making sure we are ready to respond when you call 132500 for storm and flood emergencies !

10.01.2022 Only big trees fall at Woolpooher. One tonight was across the full width of the highway. Thanks to the locals and truck driver who had a lot off the road before we arrived and helped move the heavy stuff as we cut it up.

10.01.2022 When should you call SES for a flood emergency? Just inn case you were wondering .......

09.01.2022 Remember, if you see SES or any other emergency vehicle out and about with flashing lights, slow to 40km or less when passing. This will help keep you, your passengers, our members and other road users safe. It may also save you $ 272 and 1.75 penalty points! https://youtu.be/O3_l_Gc5ua4

09.01.2022 If you've ever been tempted to drive through floodwater, here's why you should never even think about it. Scary, isn't it?

08.01.2022 Yesterday the Hamilton area was hit by a thunderstorm that delivered heavy rain and large hail. Hamilton SES had 10 requests for assistance. Our role is about making things safe and preventing further damage. The owners with their insurers are organising clean up, electrical checks and repairs. Many of the calls yesterday were a result of a combination of flat rooves and plumbing that couldn't cope with the heavy rain sometimes exacerbated by gutters in need of cleaning out. Please clean out your gutters. Don't wait for the next downpour. There are severe thunderstorms north of us now and forecast that we could have them here today. Now is the time for action.

08.01.2022 Two black wattles near Tarrington didn't cope with the wind. Both fell over Yatchaw Rd. Crews with chainsaws have cleared the road now. To request assistance for storm or flood events call SES on 132500

06.01.2022 Hamilton SES Is recruiting now! There are many ways you can make a contribution to your community as a VICSES volunteer, and lots of new skills that you can learn. Chainsaw is just one of many skills that volunteers use when responding to requests for assistance for storm events. ... If you want to find out more, or register interest in becoming a VICSES volunteer, go to www.ses.vic.gov.au or send us a message and we will get back to you. If you do need us for a storm emergency, call 132500, and we will not be too far away.

06.01.2022 Thankfully we haven't had rain like NSW and Queensland. East Gippsland is next on the list. Prepare your property for the time that heavy rain arrives. It is better to be prepared now than wait for water to be rising or running down hil towards your place. Advice is available at https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/web/www/get-ready/floodsafe

06.01.2022 The Lake Hamilton Spillway is in full force today as yesterday's rain event makes it's way down the Grangeburn River. Powerful but quite hypnotic!

06.01.2022 With the Bureau of Meteorology officially declaring La Niña, we can expect an increase in heavy rainfall and the likelihood of widespread flooding across parts of Australia, including Victoria. Now is the time to get flood ready. Visit our website for more info: https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/get-ready

05.01.2022 A friend and colleague - missed every day. RIP Brenton

05.01.2022 All crews have now knocked off after a busy day trying to minimise the impact of the significant storm which passed through Hamilton from around 3pm this afternoon. We were a bit busy to take photo's, but here are just a few. In addition to crews responding in the local area, we also had a crew helping out Warrnambool SES due the the significant impacts in their community.... While we always try to respond to each request as soon as possible, we appreciate the patience of those who had to wait due to the number of requests that came through in a short period of time. The significant rainfall resulted in a number of flash flood events with water entering homes and garages. While it is a challenge for gutters, downpipes, drains and stormwater to cope with such a volume over a short period, it REALLY DOES HELP if gutters, downpipes and drains are clear of debris and blockages before a storm hits. It was evident when talking with those impacted, that SAFETY SWITCHES really do save lives - many home owners indicated that their safety switch had already activated, with water coming through light fittings and down walls.

04.01.2022 Tomorrow will be windy in Hamilton!!! DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely to develop about the Grampians and parts of the southwest district early Sunday morning. * Check that loose items such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured and move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid tr...avel if possible. * Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees. * Stay away from fallen powerlines always assume they are live. * Stay informed monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency. The link shows the area that is covered by the warning. https://reg.bom.gov.au/products/IDV21037.shtml

03.01.2022 Research shows, those who have strong relationships within their communities and with their neighbours are more likely to help one another and have better outcomes when faced with emergencies.
