25.01.2022 'At home' scattered worship resources for 27th September and the 'Season of Creation' for those unable to join us at Hamilton from 9.30am Sundays! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtY2AYiXuNw

24.01.2022 PRE-ORDER THE MAKARRATA PROJECT NOW: MidnightOil.lnk.to/TheMakarrataProject It’s been almost 20 years since Midnight Oil unveiled a new longform release. That w...ait will finally be over on October 30 when their seven song mini-album, THE MAKARRATA PROJECT lands online and in stores on CD & Vinyl. Last month, the live-sounding lead track ‘Gadigal Land’ (featuring Dan Sultan, Joel Davison, Kaleena Briggs & Bunna Lawrie) provided an incendiary first taste of this themed collection. A second single, ‘First Nation’ (featuring Jessica Mauboy & Tasman Keith), was dropped online today. Driven by a tough drum/guitar/synth groove, this new song recalls the more sonically experimental end of Midnight Oil as featured on trailblazing works like 10 TO 1 and REDNECK WONDERLAND. Today the band also revealed the full track listing for THE MAKARRATA PROJECT including all the collaborators who have contributed to various songs. The list features a wide cross section of prominent First Nations’ artists; from Jessica Mauboy, Alice Skye and Tasman Keith through established talents such as Leah Flanagan and Troy Cassar-Daley to revered elders Kev Carmody, Sammy Butcher and Frank Yamma. One song also features an achingly beautiful posthumous vocal by the legendary artist known as Gurrumul. The collection concludes with an all-star reading of The Uluru Statement From The Heart including prominent Indigenous Australians - Stan Grant, Ursula Yovich, Pat Anderson and AFL trailblazer Adam Goodes. All of these brilliant collaborators that we worked with delivered fresh interpretations of the songs, and brought strong new ideas to the album, explains drummer Rob Hirst. This added immensely to the final result. We were particularly moved that Gurrumul’s family and label gave us these previously unheard recordings of him singing. They’re a real highlight. Frontman Peter Garrett said, It’s been 250 years since Cook landed, when Aboriginal and Islander peoples’ children, land & waters were first taken away. Yet the impacts of the original dispossession are still widely felt. We urgently need to up the ante on Reconciliation generally and follow through on the ground breaking Uluru Statement. These songs are about recognising that our shared history needs settlement, and that more than ever, as the Statement From The Heart proclaims, we need to walk together to create a better future. The band has always liked to cover a lot of ground, reflects guitarist/keyboardist Jim Moginie, but this mini-album is particularly diverse. The common thread comes from the subject matter and the collaborative spirit behind each song. Midnight Oil will donate their share of proceeds from THE MAKARRATA PROJECT to organisations that seek to elevate The Uluru Statement From The Heart (fromtheheart.com.au). Sony Music Entertainment Australia will match any artist contribution. After centuries of struggle for recognition and justice, 2017’s Uluru Statement called for the establishment of a ‘First Nations Voice’ enshrined in the Australian Constitution and the establishment of a ‘Makarrata Commission’ to supervise agreement-making and truth-telling between governments and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. THE MAKARRATA PROJECT 1. First Nation (feat. Jessica Mauboy & Tasman Keith) 2. Gadigal Land (feat. Dan Sultan, Joel Davison, Kaleena Briggs & Bunna Lawrie) 3. Change The Date (feat. Gurrumul Yunupingu & Dan Sultan) 4. Terror Australia (feat. Alice Skye) 5. Desert Man, Desert Woman (feat. Frank Yamma) 6. Wind In My Head [Makarrata version] (feat Kev Carmody & Sammy Butcher) 7. 17.01.2022 "There is Enough for Everyone" shapes our theme for worship this coming Sunday 20th September and the following week the 27th as we reflect in "The Season of Creation" on our impact on and presence in the land where we live! I'll be sharing my poem inspired by Dorothea Mackellar "My Country" but mostly we will explore wilderness/outback as theme and ponder our own role in the wildness or exploitation. At the same time we will celebrate 'Frontier Services' Outback Links program taking volunteers with skills to rural areas to serve the community in drought and need! WE will also be praying for Middle East Peace for all those who live and work in the land, including Palestinian people...

17.01.2022 Here’s what inspired our NAIDOC Week Payers last Sunday!

15.01.2022 Today is International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste and this year OzHarvest Newcastle celebrates 10 years in Newcastle, so I caught up with the local... manager Andy to discuss their latest programs and initiatives. In 2018 I was able to secure a grant of $4,301 for OzHarvest through the Stronger Communities Program to upgrade the local kitchen, and they have certainly given it a workout! Over the past 10 years, OzHarvest’s local volunteers have rescued over 3,000 tonnes of food from local food donors and delivered more than 9 million meals to people in need. Andy and all the Newcastle Volunteers have been working overtime during the pandemic to provide emergency food relief to our local community via food hampers and cooked meals. Thank you for all the incredible work you do! OzHarvest

With a global pandemic wreaking visible and invisible havoc, how will this year draw to a close? How will our ancient life inspiring story be given voice? Four Sundays from 9.30am Waiting! All welcome to join us for COVID Safe creative, physically distanced worship with five singers or none, video reflection music, prayer, story and a gathered community worshipping God as inclusively as we can... Thanks to artist Ben Bell for this image...

15.01.2022 How might we offer support, space for special events like a Repair Cafe....

14.01.2022 Great news! ** City unveils new community basketball courts ** City of Newcastle has opened two new basketball courts near the corner of National Park and Parry... Streets to activate the formerly unused corner of National park. The new basketball courts replace the long defunct tennis facilities and sit alongside the recently opened greenspace where the former bowling club building previously stood. Following the demolition of the former bowling club building, we created new green space in this inner city park for the community to enjoy. The addition of the basketball courts makes the location the perfect place for our community to get outdoors to participate in recreation and exercise as the weather continues to warm up. I’m pleased to say that the basketball courts have opened just in time for the school holidays and I have no doubt that kids and adults alike will be heading to National Park to shoot hoops over the coming weeks. Our outdoor spaces have been coveted by our community during the pandemic and continue to be important contributors to the wellbeing of our people. The long-term future of the area will be determined through community consultation on the upcoming National Park Plan of Management. National Park is a unique site in Newcastle and will play an important part in the liveability of our city centre as the population grows and the CBD moves to the west. We’re looking forward to working with the community on the future of National Park, with engagement expected to start before the end of the year. National Park is one of Newcastle’s largest and oldest sportsgrounds and open space reserves, covering over 20 hectares and is currently home to a range of community facilities including sportsgrounds, netball courts, athletics track and high school. The northwest corner of the park was formerly home to tennis courts and a bowling club, which was later occupied by charity Life Without Barriers until 2017. In 2019 City of Newcastle commenced a process to provide safe public access to the northwest corner of the park, including demolishing the Life Without Barriers building and turfing the area for passive recreation. Investigations are currently underway for additional basketball courts at the site. The National Park Plan of Management review is currently underway, with community consultation set to commence in November and a draft plan to be publicly exhibited in early 2021. Head to City of Newcastle’s website to find a complete listing of basketball courts throughout Newcastle.

12.01.2022 Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and marks the first day of #16Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Each ...year from 25 Nov to 10 Dec, individuals, institutions and organisations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls by raising awareness about gender-based violence and challenging discriminatory attitudes. Events like the 16 Days of Activism are crucial because they shine a spotlight on the issue of violence against women. They are a moment to create public awareness about what needs to change to prevent it from happening in the first place. Everyone in the community, from individuals to institutions, can play a role in changing the norms, practices and structures that lead to, or excuse, gender-based violence. Actions can be as simple as: Educating yourself about the causes and consequences of gender-based violence Making a personal commitment to not condone or accept violence, and to speak up Having conversations with family and friends about the negative impact of violence on individuals and communities Leading a Bible study on gender equality with your family or small group (https://www.unitingworld.org.au/gendertheology/) Using your social media to speak up, let your community know you are there for support, share resources and information; including about available support services in your country. Earlier this year, we worked together with women’s fellowships from our partner churches across the Pacific to develop a series of posters out of messages shared by the Pacific Conference of Churches and United Church in the Solomon Islands. They have also been made into tiles for use on social media (see below), so we’ll be sharing these, as well as what our partners are doing to mark the 16 Days in their communities. Together we can create a world without gender-based violence. #16DaysOfActivism #IDEVAW #16Days

05.01.2022 Thanks for walking the talk David W! Climate justice means not leaving anyone behind! We can map a green future transitioning industry to grow new jobs or we can remain in the dark and let the future just happen to us... stewardship or care for the creation is our calling!

04.01.2022 Donald Miller's New York Bestseller Novel "Blue Like Jazz" explores different perspectives or stories of seeking to 'keep the faith', to live out a discipleship journey in all life's challenges. Even in questioning and rejecting his own experiences Don knows bad advice and empty observance when he sees it! Little stories, big ideas!! All welcome from 9.30am Sunday, COVID safe, socially distanced, worship!

02.01.2022 Although the Uniting Church nationally invited us to focus on NAIDOC Week this Sunday I reckon it's too late! I wanted our people to kick off the week and 'get' the context of the radio and TV they've experienced this week and although gathered events were restricted, to be aware of the issues... We shared a UCA Prayer (modified), heard about this years poster, were reminded what's on in Newcastle, through the Museum and Art gallery + Saretta Fielding at Wallsend Library! We ...heard 'The Uluru Statement from the Heart' recitation and the song "Come On Down" from Midnight Oil's 'The Makarraat Project' and we spent time reflecting on'Waiting' and questioned typical renderings of the story of the ten bridesmaids... e.g. What did the Oil represent? Why were the five who prepared, not willing to share it? If it's not boiled down to "Jesus is Coming, Look Busy" then what is the story about... maybe again that Waiting is active, not passive and the Kingdom of God invites our action in loving God and neighbour and in listening to our indigenous brothers and sisters, who as Vincent Lingiari said "know how to wait"...
