06.01.2022 Web of Wyrd - Long Post. The web of Wyrd represents an underpinning concept or world view of Old Icelandic and Old English which describes the building blocks ...of the universe and the connectedness of all things across all dimensions, including time. The #web of Wyrd consist of nine straight lines, within which all the #runes can be found, and therefore all past, present and future possibilities. The number 9 is sacred and significant in Norse and Germanic paganism. #wyrd connects our present choices and realities to our past actions and the actions of everyone else, forming a constantly shifting ‘web’ or matrix of our intersecting lives. Three female beings, the ‘Norns,’ are said to sit by the Well of Fates at the base of #Yggdrasil (The World Tree containing the nine worlds at the heart of the Old #Norse creation story). Their names are Urðr (What Once Was), Verðandi (What Is Coming Into Being) and Skuld (What Shall Be). They spend their time spinning and weaving the threads, and thereby determining the fates, of all living things. Unlike many belief systems, Wyrd does not distinguish between our own free will actions and the outcomes of fate, but rather sees those things as inextricably linked. One’s past actions determine future fate. The threads of life tie you back to your beginnings, and are woven together with others over a life to form the #tapestry of Wyrd. I am a strong believer in #jewellery as #talismans and touchstones of personal significance. Today I made this piece following on from some recent other visual and poetic artwork along a similar theme. Hope you like this representation of Wyrd I created today. In keeping with the concept, it is made from recycled silver with its own mutable past, present and future possibilities thanks to Heather for the donation of silver. Thanks also to Graham Butcher, #veganviking_girl, Neil Gaiman as well as www.norsemyth.org. If you’re interested in this concept or Norse #mythology in general, the best resource I have come across is Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology and a great description of Wyrd can be found at: https://www.norsemyth.org//wyrd-will-weave-us-together.htm
