24.01.2022 Tyre pressure... It might seem like a minor issue that can be put off until next week and in many cases it can... Until it's too late... Tyre pressure has a significant effect on your vehicle's performance, cost of running and safety. Checking your tyre pressure regualrly is one of the easiest ways to keep your tyres in good condition by helping your tyres to wear evenly. This saves you money in the long run. Why is tire pressure important?... Air pressure in a pneumatic tyre helps to distribute a vehicle's weight evenly across the tyre’s tread so the vehicle is at its most stable condition. When a tyre is under-inflated or over-inflated, it loses stability, affects handling, cornering and the time it takes to stop. Eventually the tyre will wear unevenly. Under-inflated tyres tend to show wear on the outter edges of the tyre tread, while over-inflated tyres show wear down the middle of the tyre tread. Check your tyre pressure regualry... We recommend that you check your tyre pressure at least once a month as a bare minimum but preferably once a fortnight. Any time you plan to take a long road trip you should definitely check tyre pressure prior to heading off. Its preferable to check pressure while the tyres are cold. Heat from the road while driving increases the air temperature and can temporarily increase tyre pressure. Thus cold readings are more accurate. Use a good quality tyre gauge and adjust the pressure according to the car's tyre placard: usually found inside the driver’s side door jamb. Or... When in doubt, get your car inspected by one of Hampstead Auto Repair's talented techs who can assess tyre pressure amongst all the other things that keep your pride and joy rolling. Come see us today and drive safe. #tyrepressure #keeponrolling #hampsteadautorepairs

23.01.2022 Car of the month - 1996 Saab 900 Cabrio (in black) Becoming a more and more rare sight in Australia is the old-school Saab 900. Saab produced the 900 series as a midsized option from 1978 all the way up to 1998. The early to mid-90s was considered to be the classic era of Saab with iconic styling. Some say its elegant, some say its ugly, bit it has always provoked discussion. The 1996 model Saab 900 was based on the original Saab 99 style chassis but presented a longer, ...sleeker front. Available in a variety of options, the most iconic and recognisable is the 2 door cabrio. A sporty, top-down daily driver, the convertible was available in both turbo and non turbo engine variations. With 2100 cc of engine displacement, the non turbo option produced a stunning 103kW which was strong for that class of engine during the mid-90s. Black Saab rules! What are these cars famous for..? The black 1996 Saab Cabrio was featured in the 176th episode "The Puerto Rican Day" of the NBC Sitcom; Seinfeld, driven by the show’s main character Jerry. Stuck in traffic for hours during a Puerto Rican street festival, Jerry and his friends attempt to outmanoeuvre stuck traffic, particularly trying to get ahead of one other driver in a Maroon coloured VW Golf Cabrio. Jerry shouts to the other driver Black Saab rules upon gaining a small advantage for what turns out to be a very small period. The line has become synonymous with the show and Saab’s in general. These classic cars are often available as a weekend fun project or even a daily drive. Like any car over 25 years of age, they suffer the usual issues, and the convertible tops can require attention in some cases. They do make a fun, summer weekend drive for what is a small investment between $2000 to $6000 on average. If you own a Saab and want the best out of it, see the good team at Hampstead Auto Repairs, they have the right experience, skills and tools to make sure your Saab rules! www.hampsteadautorepairs.com.au #hampsteadautorepairs #blacksaabrules #seinfeld #saab900cabrio #saab

21.01.2022 CAR OF THE MONTH Mazda MX5 First Gen The Mazda MX-5, otherwise known as the Eunos Roadster in Japan or the Mazda MX-5 Miata in North America is the first generation of the Mazda MX-5 series manufactured from 1989 through to 1997. Drawing inspiration from such old school British classics as the MG-B and the Triumph Spitfire, Mazda designers sought to put a small, lightweight sporty roadster back out there for enthusiasts alike to enjoy. Since that time, the MX-5 has won numero...us automotive awards including the World’s Best Selling Sports car award. Powered by a variety of engines but most commonly the Mazda in line 1.6L 4-cylinder engine, the car is lower on power, but its small stance, light weight and sharp design make it a fun, zippy competitor. The older variant is now a collector’s car and most commonly seen in the classic red color. Very enjoyable with the top down and barreling through the Adelaide hills on a sunny day, this roadster can keep up with cars above its class. Enjoyable for young and old, these ones depreciated top down Mazdas have gone up in value fetching as much as $15,000 in good condition. If you've ever looked at one and thought that the front bumper looked like a smile, you're bang on. Mazda designers sought to put a 'happy' look into the car and the front lower spoiler curving upwards like a grin achieved this. If you own a Mazda MX5 of any year r variant, make sure you get it in good condition by bringing it into the team at Hampstead Auto Repairs. The team have seen them before and know how to get the most out of them. www.hampsteadautorepairs.com.au #hampstedautorepairs #mazdamx5

16.01.2022 Windscreen Wipers Overlooked but VERY IMPORTANT When it comes to vehicle safety, windscreens are one of the most important parts of the car. They keep wind, dust, bugs, and other objects from flying in and hitting vehicle drivers and passengers. But what protects the windscreen? When it comes to Adelaide’s often changing weather conditions, windscreen wipers are the last line of defence. Nearly all motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, etc. have them installed and are ess...ential for clear driving vision. On rainy days, water droplets on the windscreen continuously disrupt the visibility of the driver and this can lead to a major accident. With changing technology, we have electrical and motorised windscreen wipers that can even recognize the presence of rain and clear the glass automatically before the driver even needs to react to the issue. Although a very important part of a car, windscreen wipers are often paid little attention, and people usually recognize their importance when it rains. Just like any other vehicle component, wiper blades can chip, crack, and eventually provide reduced efficiency in cleaning the windscreen properly. Here are the top 5 signs of windscreen wiper damage or failure: Rust or corrosion Separation of the blade from the frame Cracks or tears in the rubber Squeaking sound while cleaning the windscreen Large streaking lines along the windscreen Any of these signs can be dangerous while on the road as they can lead to an unclear and scratched windscreen that ultimately reduced visibility. Regular maintenance of windscreen wiper blades is vitally important to have clear visibility when you are driving. Good quality wiper blades are necessary to clean a windscreen and ensure this clear visibility. When you take your car for a service or check up, you should always request that your mechanic check the suitability and remaining life of your windscreen wipers. Your mechanic will check to ensure that the wipers are not damaged and are in a good condition. We recommend that wiper blades be replaced every six months to a year based on their usage. This will make sure that the wipers are ready to use whenever needed and prevent the windscreen glass of your car from becoming scratched. Additionally, you can also clean the blades regularly at home yourself with paper towel or a soft fabric towel. The helpful team at Hampstead Auto Repairs check windscreen wipers as part of any car checkup and service. Their diligent team of technicians and mechanics care for your car as if it where their own. #windscreenwipers #roadsaftey #hampsteadautorepairs #

15.01.2022 Mazda CX7 - Timing Chain Issue Over the years our team has learned the pros and cons of different makes and models. Although our checks are thorough and cover all the bases we know certain cars have points that are more likely to need repair or have a greater chance of breaking down. Although its a great car, weve seen a consistent issue with Mazda CX7s. The timing chain tends to go much earlier than with other cars in its range. ... When a timing chain is worn it begins to develop 'slack'and can come loose. This can lead to the engine valves, which are indirectly powered by the timing chain to no longer run properly. They being to run off sync and the engine will show signs like a rough idle, extreme lack of power or no turn over at all. The team at Hampstead Auto Repairs can check this though and fix at a cost effective rate. Get your Mazda CX7 in today and ask the question before being stuck out in the heat. #hampsteadautorepairs #mazdacx7 #timingchain

10.01.2022 Car of the Month 1996 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo The famous and now classic Nissan 300ZX is well recognised member of the Nissan Z range of sports cars. Otherwise known as the Fairlady Z, the car traces its lineage back to the original Datsun 240Z. Following on from a previously successful Nissan 300Z in the late 80s, the addition of the "X" to the car's name was a carryover but distinction that this was a new, more powerful car. Referred to as the Z32 variant that follow...ed on from the pop-up light based Z31 in the 80s, this car has often been described as having a Lamborghini Diablo like design. Powered by a 3.0L V6 engine with twin turbos pushing the engine to well over 220 HP, this car was well respected in its day and seen as the connoisseur alternative to the Nissan Skyline. Indeed, Nissan was truly carving out its legacy in the 90s with two amazing sports car options powered by differing yet equally respected high-power engines. Depending on where your 300ZX came from it may come in either a 2-seater or 4 seater option. Double wishbone active suspension provided amazing handling and many 300ZX’s had numerous options that were cutting edge for their day. They continue to go up in value now as a collector’s item and are especially desired in the drifting and street modification scene. Variations of the 300ZX came in hard top, an appealing targa and even a very rare convertible option that now fetches over $30k depending on condition and mileage. Car and Driver Magazine placed the Z32 Nissan 300ZX in its Top 10 Best list for seven years running. The 1996 model was the last before the Z family took a break until the mid 2000s. One very famous point about the Nissan 300ZX was that it featured in a very adrenaline based Superbowl Commercial in the 90s that gave it massive appeal. It was later (the commercial) said to have been banned for a period of time as it was seen to incite street racing. The commercial coined the famous Nissan Z phrase: And just as they’re about to catch me. the twin.. turbos. kick. in. Check out the original commercial in the post above where we have shared the YouTube link. If you have a Nissan 300ZX and want to keep it sharp and running smoothly, see the good team at Hampstead Auto Repairs. They have the knowledge and experience to maximise its performance and ensure it stays on the road for years to come. www.hampsteadautorepairs.com.au #hampsteadutorepairs #nissan300z #twinturbo #90sjapanesesportscars

10.01.2022 What is a Muffler??? A Mufflers is part of your vehicle’s exhaust system and is usually found at the rear, bottom end of your car. The purpose of your muffler is to reduce vehicle emissions as well as reduce engine noise. Mufflers are generally made of steel and coated with aluminum to provide protection from heat levels and various chemicals released from the car’s exhaust system. The pressure of gases released from the piston chambers in an engine creates sound. When you ...get down to it, sound (of any kind) is a pressure wave created by vibrations. As such, every time your exhaust valves open, a very high-pressured gas enters into the exhaust system creating a very loud sound. Sound can actually be cancelled out though. If you introduce a pressure that is the exact opposite of the initial sound wave, they cancel each other out, and there is no sound. This is aided by specially designed muffler walls that are designed to absorb much of the sound waves. If you’ve ever heard an engine without a muffler, or even a damaged muffler you’ll learn quickly just how important this part is. If we all drove around in cars with no muffles, the streets would be a very noisy place. Mufflers can produce a variety of sounds form a very quiet hum through to a finely tuned note out of the Fast and Furious movies. You can adjust the sound, the amount of harmful emissions and even enhance your car’s performance by the installation of various mufflers. If you want to enhance your performance, exhaust sound or even just replace an old muffler that has been damaged, call the expert team at Hampstead Auto today. https://www.hampsteadautorepairs.com.au/ #hampsteadautorepairs #muffler #exhaustsystem

08.01.2022 5 Signs of Timing Chain Issues... All internal combustion-based engines have a timing chain or timing belt. Generally, the higher-displacement engines utilize a timing chain and lower displacement engines utilize a timing belt. You can locate the timing chain or belt at the front of the engine where it is connected to gears and pulleys that power the different parts of the engine. These parts include the crankshaft and camshaft. For your engine to run smoothly, the timing cha...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Petrol in a Diesel Engine! What do you do??? A Hampstead Auto client was flat out on Christmas Eve last year. With all the running around and getting ready he made a little mistake whilst filling up his wife’s new car Not realizing it was a diesel engine car in all the rush and confusion, he pumped a full tank of petrol into the tank and then drove it over to the parking bay whilst she went into pay. ... When she went to pay at the counter, the attendant let her know that Pump 4 was $80 of petrol not diesel Running out in a hurry she told him to quickly stop the engine. This happens more often than you might think or like. After all the apologies and regrets, comes the question of what to do next when you have a diesel tank full of petrol. Lets discuss. 1. DONT start the engine! 2. If you have started the engine or even driven the car, stop it immediately as soon as you realize. 3. Book roadside assistance or a tow truck to get you to your mechanic ideally the friendly team at Hampstead Auto Repair 4. Let the professional do the work. Pumping petrol into a diesel car can cause serious damage to the fuel injection system as well as the engine. The fuel pump in a diesel engine operates on fine tolerance levels at high pressures and requires diesel fuel for lubrication. When petrol is pumped into diesel, it reduces the lubrication properties, which can damage the fuel pump causing metal on metal friction. This can create small metal fragments which can cause significant damage to the fuel system. Serious engine damage may occur due to detonation caused by the petrol igniting under the much higher compression ratio of a diesel engine. Putting petrol in a diesel car is an easy mistake but can be costly. But its also easy to stop your mistake from costing you the big bucks. When you realize during or after filling up with petrol t, don’t start the engine. Instead, call Hampstead Auto or the RAA and arrange a tow. The first step in solving the problem will be to drain the tank. We don’t recommend you try to siphon the petrol yourself. You will be unable to remove all of the fuel and even filling up at that point with diesel will leave too much petrol mixed in that can still cause significant damage. Additionally, you could be putting your safety or the environment at risk. A good mechanic will not only remove the fuel and dispose of it safely and in an environmentally friendly manner but also remove the fuel tank for cleaning to ensure no residual traces of petrol are left. It will also be necessary to flush the fuel lines and replace the fuel filter. Luckily the team at Hampstead Autos have seen this before and can get you back on the road quickly. Keep calm, pull over, turn your engine off and call them. #hampsteadautorepairs #petrolindieselengine #badday #turntheendineoff

05.01.2022 What is a camshaft???? An average internal combustion engine has over a housand of pieces, and of these, more than 200 are moving at any given time. The camshaft is one of the most important of these parts and we will take it look at why it is so vital. For a start, an engine simply wont run without a camshaft and definitely won't run well if the camshaft is damaged in anyway. It's a hidden component inside the engine that most people never see but plays an important role. L...et’s take a look at what a camshaft is, what function it has, and what happens when something goes wrong with it. Put simply, a camshaft is a shaft with cams attached to it... These cams are oval-shaped parts (lobes), placed at precise points along the shaft. The shaft length and the number of cams is directly related to the number of valves and cylinders that the engine has. Thus a V8 engine has more cam lobes than a 4 cylinder engine. Camshafts are mostly made of hardened steel or cast iron alloy and are designed to undergo intense speed and pressure. The camshaft opens and closes valves in the cylinder head. As the camshaft rotates, high spots on the cams press on parts known as valve lifters. That motion ensures valves open, and valve springs return the valve to the original seated position as soon as the cam lobe rotates past. The timing belt connects sprockets on the front side of the crankshaft and the camshaft so they operate with precise, harmonious timing. The crankshaft sends energy to the camshaft for it to rotate, causing the intake and exhaust valves to open and close at appropriate times. Problems with Camshafts? Like all moving engine parts, there’s always a potential for the camshaft to have breakdowns issues from wear and tear. In most cases, the Check Engine light will come on alerting you to some sort of trouble. Specific error codes related to camshaft issues include a misfire code for a specific cylinder and possible camshaft position sensor codes. Other signs of a camshaft issue include: 1. Backfiring or popping from the exhaust or intake 2. Tapping noises from the top part of the engine 3. A dead miss in the engine 4. A severe loss of engine power output These symptoms can be tricky to discern however as they are not exclusive to camshaft issues. A trained mechanic must diagnose and determine a camshaft issue. Parts to replace the camshaft for most cars will be vary from around $200 to $1000 for the camshaft, plus related seals and gaskets. The labour for camshaft replacement is certainly the most expensive part of the repair estimate and varies depending on the complexity and time taken to disassemble, insert the new camshaft as well as related parts and then reassemble. If you believe you have a camshaft issue or would like more power from your pride and joy by upgrading to a performance camshaft then visit the highly talented team at Hampstead Auto repair today. #hampsteadautorepairs #camshaft #bestperformance

03.01.2022 5 REASONS WHY THE OIL CHANGE IS SO IMPORTANT Engines are made up of moving components, and they need to be lubricated to avoid engine component damage. Over time and through driving, oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with dust and dirt from the engine as well as other factors. When that happens, oil can’t do its job properly. Here are 5 reasons why oil changes are absolutely necessary. 1. PROPER LUBRICATION... Proactively changing a vehicles’ oil and filter will help the engine's pistons, valves, and other engine parts moving at high rates of speed under bonnet of a car. These components work at high temperatues and wear down the engine dramatically without proper oil lubrication. 2. KEEPING TEMPERATURES DOWN Oil helps to cool engine components. Moving parts that lack proper lubrication create friction which creates heat. Maintaining clean and sufficient levels of oil prevents too much friction and over-heating. 3. REDUCING ENGINE WEAR Good engine oil removes engine wear particles and dirt. Over time, dirt causes corrosion and decreases the life of an engine. As time goes on, oil breaks down and turns to sludge. Routine oil and filter changes help remove dirt and sludge. 4. FUEL EFFICIENCY Poor engine lubrication can lead to a higher rate of fuel consumption. Over time, this can add up to being a greater cost than changing the oil at the required regular intervals. A buildup of dirty oil robs a vehicle’s fuel efficieny and power and causes internal components strain 5. AVOIDING FUTURE REPAIRS An engine that works harder than it needs to will end up having more problems down the track and probably have a shorter life. Regualar maintenance, including oil changes, will avoid future problems and provide more confidence to a buyer when it comes time to sell your pride and joy. Performing oil changes personally can be messy, time consuming and a hassle. Come and see the team at Hampstead Auto for an affordable and convenient service or oil change today. #oilchange #hampsteadauto #goodengineperformance

03.01.2022 Diesel in a Petrol Engine! The other mistake! Readers and subscribers will remember our last post about a Hampstead Auto client e made a little mistake whilst filling up his wife’s new car last Christmas After he pumped a full tank of petrol into the diesel tank, he had a slight problem on his hand. With this little mistake in mind, we wanted to flip the coin and discuss what would happen if you put diesel in an petrol engine. Is it the same???... The diesel pump nozzle is bigger than most petrol filler necks, so it doesn't really fit. That makes it far less common to put the wrong fuel in a petrol car than putting petrol in a diesel car. Plus, it's not as bad for a petrol engine to have diesel in it so there's usually not as much damage to worry about Here's what happens when you put diesel into a car that is supposed to run on petrol: 1. Diesel clogs up the spark plugs 2. Diesel clogs up the fuel system. 3. The car simply won’t ignite 4. The car simply won’t run. Simple right? Well no but certainly a lot better than the other way round. What do you do? Similar to our last scenario follow these basic rules: 1. DONT start the engine! 2. If you have started the engine or even driven the car, stop it immediately as soon as you realize. 3. Book roadside assistance or a tow truck to get you to your mechanic ideally the friendly team at Hampstead Auto Repair 4. Let the professional do the work. Pumping diesel fuel into a petrol run car can still cause damage to the fuel injection system as well as the engine but it is much less likely to occur. When you realize during or after filling up with diesel don’t start the engine. If you have been running it, turn it off as soon as possible. There is a high probability that it will not run for long if at all anyway. Then call Hampstead Auto or the RAA and arrange a tow. What next? The first step (just like our last post) in solving this problem will be to drain the tank. Don’t try to siphon the diesel out yourself. You will be unable to remove all of the diesel and even filling up at that point with petrol will still leave a bad mix. One of our team can remove the diesel and dispose of it safely and in an environmentally friendly manner but also remove the fuel tank for replacement or cleaning to ensure no residual traces are left. It will also be necessary to flush the fuel lines and replace the fuel filter. Good news is that the team at Hampstead Autos have seen petrol in diesel and diesel before. Keep calm, pull over, turn your engine off and call them. The tell your friends about the wonderful service at Hampstead Auto Repairs. #hampsteadautorepairs #dieselinapetrolengine #badday #turntheendineoff

03.01.2022 Car of the Month 1969 Boss 429 Ford Mustang The Boss 429 Mustang is a high-performance Ford Mustang variant that was offered by Ford in 1969 and 1970.... The Boss 429 is recognized as being among one of the rarest and most valued American muscle cars in history. There were 1359 original Boss 429s made and a stack of knock off replicas. Originally, Ford needed to produce a certain number of them to fulfill the NASCAR racing production requirements. They also needed to develop an engine that would better compete with the Chrysler 426 Hemi. After weighing up many options, Ford decided that the Mustang would be the car that would house the new 429 engine and compete for honors in the NASCAR division. The Boss 429 engine traces its origins to the Ford 385 engine. It came standard with a single Holley 4-barrel carburetor mounted on an aluminum intake manifold with a high flow factor. 1969 cars featured a hydraulic lifter camshaft while 1970 models got a mechanical lifter camshaft along with an dual sports exhaust system. Initially, the Mustang's engine compartment was not wide enough to accommodate the much larger 429 engine. and Ford had to find a way to modify the 4-speed Cobra-Jet to accept and run the engine. new Boss 429 Engine. Beginning production in 1968 for a 1969 release out of Michigan the cars were designed to create attention from their first announcement.
