25.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW? One in three women in Australia will experience violence in her lifetime and one in five will experience sexual violence. These are the statistics that have driven socially-concious entrepreneurs to develop the Hamstr. Ball. Scott and Greg (aged 39 and 42) came up with the idea after discovering they had similar safety concerns for their daughters when walking in public areas. Knowing they could not eliminate all danger for women, they decided to do the next b...est thing: to create something that would eliminate the safety concerns women have when out in public spaces. 23.01.2022 We thought we should tell you THIS PRODUCT ISN’T REAL. However, the violence and victim blaming that women experience in our society is. We found it important to highlight that women are not responsible for the violence perpetrated against them. Therefore, we need to break down the assumptions about gendered violence! We are the Youth Action Group for Melbourne City Mission and we are a bunch of young, passionate volunteers who wanted to raise awareness of the unrealistic e...xpectations placed on women to be conscious of their own safety and surroundings. The idea was sparked in our minds in response to increased sexual violence in Melbourne and existing attitudes that the responsibility for fixing this problem sits with the victim. We have some tips and advice on how to combat victim blaming, recommended by Southern Connecticut State University: Avoid using language that objectifies or degrades women... 07.01.2022 When Grace Milane took off on her travels after finishing uni, we imagine she was looking forward to meeting fun new people, exploring new cultures, and broadening her proverbial horizons. Instead, her life was tragically and unexpectedly cut short on the eve of her 22nd birthday. Whilst her family have received an outpouring of support, some online discussions have instead questioned why Grace was travelling alone, or why she was (potentially) using dating apps. Grace was ...not killed by dating apps. She was not killed by travelling overseas by herself. She was (allegedly) killed by a 26 year old man. Instead of asking why about all the completely normal and acceptable things Grace did - lets instead ask why a person decided to take her life. Next time you’re involved in a conversation about why a victim of violence went out, or drank alcohol, or used tinder, or walked through a park, or got in a taxi alone instead question WHY the perpetrator made the decision to hurt (or kill, or assault, or harass) another person.
