24.01.2022 Understanding Immunity (or what gets us down?) In the winter months ahead supporting Immunity (or staying well) is perhaps more important this winter than in previous years? While we can not always prevent illness, we can try to increase our resistance to illness, to get over illnesses more quickly? Major risk factors that contribute to the incidence general acute infections include: Contagion -Exposure to infected persons and/or animals ...Poor hygiene, unsanitary conditions (from food handling to washing our hands) Contaminated food and water Excessive or long-term stress Endurance exercise (reduces immune resistance) Allergies - Both dietary and environmental allergens Some medical treatments that compromise immunity, for example chemotherapy Age immune function can tend to decrease as we age Existing infection, for example hepatitis, or HIV/AIDS Chronic disease that compromises immunity Winter - Due to low humidity, staying in closer contact with others and nutrient deficiencies (vitamin D) Smoking - Leading to oxidative stress on the body Travel overseas or camping Obesity may increase the risk of viral diseases Toxicity (gut & environmental) may also lead to compromised immunity and decreased resistance For more information about our immune system read on at https://www.handcraftedhealth.com.au/blog and watch out for the next blog Winter Wellness with suggestions on how to boost your immunity and ideas to combat ill-health!

Nobody escapes the adversities of life, whether they are potentially traumatic events such as the sudden death of a loved one, or setbacks in personal or work life Well-being includes the domains of the physical, emotional, cognitive, social and spiritual, of the whole person It can be defined as a state of alignment in body, mind, and spirit, where you are flourishing. Healthy eating, nourishment, and digestion as well an appropriate and restful... sleep is part of a balancing feedback loop for energy production, hormone balance, learning, and cognition, balanced moods and emotions When this combination is achieved you can feel back to your best and on top of things! 15.01.2022 WINTER WELLNESS The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that defends the body against infection. The immune system responds to infection with both non-specific responses (e.g., inflammation) and targeted specific responses (e.g., T-cell mediated antigenic response). The immune system also keeps a record of every germ (microbe) it has ever defeated so it can recognise and destroy the microbe quickly if it enters the body again. The infectious agents (path...ogens) we are exposed to include bacteria, parasites, fungi, viruses. We are exposed to pathogens through contact with other people or surfaces where it is able to survive for a period of time. So, when the pathogens do manage to cross the barriers, we have acute infections occur as micro-organisms invade and multiply anywhere in the body, leading to tissue injury through a variety of cellular or toxic mechanisms. Bacteria float around in our blood stream, but viruses get into the cells and hijack the cells machinery (so they can use the energy production to make more infected cells) Nutrients for Immunity Where to find them? 13.01.2022 Stress is normal and often healthy. In everyday life, stress plays a role in alerting us to life's occasional dangers and challenges, so we can prepare ourselves for them and find solutions to impending problems. Stress is the body's natural way of responding to demands and pressures. It was our defence mechanism against danger and predators. Our `fight or flight' mechanism, brought on by changes to hormones released by the body, tells us how to respond to the stress. We eith...er confront the danger or escape it. Too much stress or prolonged stress can trigger physical, emotional or mental symptoms e.g. muscle tension, mood swings or racing thoughts. Negative stress is a feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to cope with demands. Learn how to destress and build resilience at a free talk this Saturday with me book in at North Sydney Community Centre https://www.northsydneycentre.com.au//stress-less-and-boos See more
11.01.2022 Which is the right diet for me? I will be trying to answer this question this Saturday, Mat 2nd at 10am, in a free zoom talk run by North Sydney Community Centre. It would be great to ‘see’ you and I am happy to answer questions too! Please book in via https://www.northsydneycentre.com.au//which-diet-is-right- The most studied diet to date is The Mediterranean Diet. I have written a blog on my website that goes into more detail https://www.handcraftedhealth.com.au/ But her...e is a brief outline. Moderation is a wise approach. A balanced and healthy diet accommodates most foods and drinks, as long as moderation directs your wise choices. The Mediterranean Diet is grounded on the principles of enjoyment and pleasure. Foods, drinks and meals are best eaten with others, if at all possible, and savoured. Not eaten on the run, rushed, ‘inhaled’ rather than chewed’ The Mediterranean Diet has been found to be beneficial in managing dyslipidaemia / disordered cholesterol. This is comprised of whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil and garlic. This diet is high in monounsaturated fatty acids and has been shown to increase HDL cholesterol plasma levels and reduce susceptibility to LDL oxidation. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes: Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts Replacing butter with healthy fats, such as olive oil Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavour foods Limiting red meat to no more than a few times a month Eating fish and poultry at least twice a week Drinking red wine in moderation 1 to 2 x weekly(optional) The diet also recognizes the importance of being physically active and enjoying meals with family and friends.
