21.01.2022 Here is a little thing or two about avocado and castor oils. Avocado Oil is valued for its regenerative and rich moisturizing properties. Rich in vitamins A, D & E, lecithin, potassium, protein, and amino acids. Reported to help heal dry, flaky, itchy skin. Often used to treat sun or climate damaged skin and has anti-bacterial and anti-wrinkle properties. Wonderfully moisturizing and excellent for anyone with extremely sensitive skin. Castor Oil is easily absorbed by the ski...n making it a great skin softener and conditioner. Good for haircare and makes a wonderful natural shampoo bar. Acts as a humectant by attracting and retaining moisture to the skin. Castor oil is a thick, clear oil that helps increase the lather in soap. A rich, creamy lather. Castor oil has a fatty acid makeup that is completely unique which makes what it contributes to your soap (the rich, creamy lather) unique. Tune in again for some sweet buttery goodness! (

20.01.2022 Soap making is part chemistry and part art! Each oil that we use in our soaps afford our soaps different properties such as how bubbly the soap is when you use it! Like choosing the ingredients in any recipe, choosing the oils in our soap is an important step. Each oil imparts different qualities, properties, and benefits to the final product. Creating a soap recipe is the art of balancing the oil ratios to create the perfect bar of soap. Look out for our next post to learn about the benefits of olive oil!

16.01.2022 So, what about oils that can be purchased at any grocery store, what benefits could they provide? Canola Oil is high in minerals, vitamins and in GLA (Omega-6 fatty acid). It absorbs into the skin quickly and contributes protein and moisturizing qualities into soap. It gives a nice, low, creamy lather. Sunflower Oil is rich in Vitamin E and provides conditioning for dry skin. It works with palm and olive oils to give a nice rich creamy lather that is very moisturizing.... Rice Bran Oil is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants. It is thought that the addition of rice bran oil makes an effective anti-inflammatory product for your skin. Many believe that some of the nutrients in the rice bran oil, which includes the phytosterols, are perfect for soothing skin. These nourishing properties can help to reduce issues like eczema and rashes, and many other skin ailments that involve inflammation. Check back soon for some more commonly used oils!

15.01.2022 What are the benefits of palm oil? Sustainably sourced Palm Oil produces a hard bar with a stable lather. Palm oil has Vitamin E, Vitamin K and Magnesium and is considered a natural antioxidant. Palm oil is the third most commonly used oil by soap makers today. Because of the qualities it gives soap, it is often called Veggie Tallow in that it gives many of the same qualities that Beef Tallow does (more detail soon!) a hard bar with a rich creamy lather. Alone it is unrem...arkable, but combined with other oils like Olive, Coconut and Castor, it makes great hard, long lasting soap. *The Palm Oil used at E & J Handmade has been Certified and sustainably sourced meaning it avoids the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance. What about other oils found in Coles and Woolworths? Tune in again.

10.01.2022 In the previous post, we posted about why we use different variations of oils in our soaps. But what benefits does using olive oil afford? Olive Oil is said to help with skin cell regeneration. It acts as a humectant, drawing moisture to the skin, creating a protective layer, and holding in moisture without smothering the skin. It produces a soap with a conditioning, stable lather. Olive oil is one of the most common base oils used in soap making today. 100% olive oil or Castile soap has been made for centuries and today, soap makers of all types usually include at least some olive oil in their recipes. It makes a nice hard bar of soap, is mild, and in combination with other oils makes a nice dense lather. Check back next time to learn more about the benefits of coconut oil.

01.01.2022 We have now posted about why we use different variations of oils in our soaps and the benefits of olive oil so now, what about coconut oil? Coconut Oil is another one of the primary oils that soap makers use in their soaps. It gives a tremendously bubbly lather to your soap. It also makes for a very hard, white bar of soap. The super-cleansing nature of coconut oil can create a protective barrier for the skin, and it is great for dry and itchy skin. Coconut is the only oil that will lather in any type of water even seawater. Want to know more about Palm oil? Check in here soon.
