13.01.2022 A long day of digging in posts by hand then an awkward push for the cows into the laneway ready for preg testing tomorrow morning. But they got there and even followed the new road like a train of caterpillars. This farmer’s off for a beero. Tomorrow we see how the new bulls performed. 11.01.2022 The cows were hungry again. . . Setting up temporary laneways is a breeze with the #kiwitech. Getting them moved around tricky corners and hard to reach spaces is a sinch. We’re into fire break grazing now, so keeping them where I want them is a must in order to get round the boundaries in time for fire season. With all this green growth we’ve had, there’s going to be lots of fuel once the heat dries off the pasture. Here goes! .... #rockhousefarmkyneton See more

04.01.2022 Can you guess where the strip grazing stopped? I’m still trying to figure this one out. There’s a massive patch where the grass was left for 18 months to recover. All the weaker species of grass have died and all that’s left is plantain, flat weeds and clover. Some of the stronger perennials have remained. In the dead grass there are thousands of army worms. The dead standing grass has provided habitat. The few grass species that have come through the dead stuff have been mer...cilessly chomped by the worms. But where we’ve strip grazed, there is not a worm to be found. What does this tell me? Grass and cattle go together like fish and the deep, blue sea. They are co-adapted. And when you graze them right, as nature has built them, you get healthy grass and healthy animals. Too much rest will turn the pastures to forest, too much grazing will turn the pasture to dust.
