21.01.2022 Thanks to the recent rain there’s a lot of new life being breathed into County Victoria. The team have been hard at work at our ‘Athol’s Paddock’ Heathcote vineyard, getting it ready for the upcoming season. Check out this beautiful pair of Bearded Dragons, aren’t they wonderful! They are a very rare and welcome sight! The vineyard is looking fantastic! Being a dry grown vineyard we are entirely reliant on the water that falls from the sky, at this rate it’s going to be a gre...at year! If you’ve bought Heathcote Shiraz or Heathcote Shiraz Reserve from us in recent years through our wine club you should be receiving a letter from us soon about our annual En Primeur offer! 19.01.2022 Anton Hasell is a sculptor living here in Central Victoria, he works with both traditional and digital tools to design bells, interactive and joyful public-space installations. We are lucky enough to have a part of his most famous creation, the Federation Bells Carillon, right here in our vineyard. The Wine Glass Bell is an impressive bronze interactive piece, it has a pitch of 261Hz, which is the middle C note on a piano. Come along and see what sound you can make...... 18.01.2022 A great customer of ours was looking through some papers of his recently and found this little gem! Although it talks about our Founder and Managing Director, John Ellis's life pre Hanging Rock, we thought it was a good read. Before starting Hanging Rock John and his wife Ann (nee Tyrrell) left the Hunter Valley in search of a new frontier in Australian Winemaking. John's father in law, Murray Tyrrell was the first person in Australia to produce a commercial Chardonnay and a...lso practically owned the Semillon market. John was keen to show Murray that he had what it took to make it in this romantic yet fickle industry. The opportunity arose to move to Echuca, along the Murray River in Victoria (a place not necessarily known for its great wines) and start a winery. The winery was owned by a local doctor, Peter Tisdall, who was quite the visionary and wine industry pioneer. In those few years at Tisdall's, John was the first winemaker in Australia to make a Merlot, a Cabernet Merlot, a Fumé Blanc and a commercial cool climate Chardonnay! Whilst all the experimental varieties (such as ruby cabernet, emerald riesling (a riesling cross), merlot, barbera and malbec) were grown in the Rosbercon Vineyard in Picola, it's really the Chardonnay and Riesling from the Mount Helen vineyard in the Strathbogie Ranges that stole the limelight. Sadly the Mount Helen vineyard succumbed to phylloxera in the 1990's, something that is lamented by John to this day. After working at Tisdall's for a few years, John & Ann decided that they wanted to venture out on their own. They liked the look of the Macedon Ranges as they decided that great sparkling wine was the final frontier in Australian winemaking. The rest, they say, is history.
