23.01.2022 Avon Valley Creators Collective launch permanent shop following successful business trial in the Shire of Northam Pop-up Shop The Avon Valley Creators Collectiv...e launched a new retail experience in the Shire of Northam Pop-up Shop in March 2020 to support local Makers and elevate the shopping experience in Northam. Proprietor Lisa McDonald said There is such a diverse range of unique, handmade products available, I wanted to create an opportunity to showcase these amazing Makers from our region and State. The Shire of Northam Pop-up Shop is a retail space that is available to be used by private enterprise for short term experimentation of business concepts that have the potential to become new local shops. Shire of Northam President Chris Antonio said The Pop-up Shop provides a very affordable opportunity for potential new shop owners to test the market and build interest in a product or service prior to committing to a full lease agreement. After having a successful business trial in the Pop-up Shop, the Avon Valley Creators Collective will be opening their new permanent shop at 230 Fitzgerald Street, Northam from 07 September 2020. Lisa McDonald said The Pop-up shop has been a great opportunity to turn my little idea in to an operating business. The low overheads allowed me to focus on different aspects of my business and trial various ideas to diversify. She said I am so grateful for all of the support I have received from the Northam Shire, resulting in me having the confidence in my business concept to commit to leasing my own premises on Fitzgerald Street. I would wholeheartedly recommend any person with an idea to take advantage of the Pop-up Shop and give your idea a go. The Shire of Northam has recently partnered with Perdaman to deliver a second Pop-up Shop opportunity in the Northam Boulevard (with a Fitzgerald Street shop front). President Chris Antonio said We are looking to support the development of new and innovative businesses to activate the town centre. If you would like to find out more about Pop-up Shop opportunities and how it can benefit your business venture contact Shire of Northams Community Development Officer, Michelle Blackhurst on 6608 0233 or [email protected]. 20.01.2022 Last week, crews from Koondrook Fire Brigade, Cohuna Fire Brigade and Kerang Fire Brigade worked alongside Fire and Rescue NSW on a chimney fire in Koondrook. T...hankfully the blaze was noticed early by the resident and crews were able to minimise damage to the property. Have you cleaned your chimney or flue recently? If youre lighting up your fireplace this weekend, ensure you check your chimney. Use a torch to check for creosote build-up or obstructions like bird nests. Have your chimney professionally cleaned annually. Koondrook Fire Brigade

13.01.2022 My name is Taylor-Jane Bellotti; I am a proud Yamatji woman and mother of two with connections to the Malgana and Kija language groups. I was born in Perth and ...moved between Broome and Carnarvon for the first few years of my life, before settling in Perth. As I grew up in Perth and off country, I have great respect for the Noongar language group but have always felt a little lost. I believe that I am not as connected to my culture as I would like to explore this side of my identity, more as I mature. I remember times, when I was younger, going to Shark Bay with the family and going out net fishing or just throwing a line off the rocks. I found these moments to be very healing, and I still long to return to country. Growing up in the city, I have been on the go and trying to find my place in the world. As such, I have been able to achieve things that I didnt believe were possible for a young Aboriginal woman. Being told I would never succeed in life and that I would end up another statistic. However, I was able to defy the odds and graduate year 12, complete a Vet Nursing degree, during which I was awarded Polytechnic West Aboriginal student of the year and runner up in the state. Somehow, still, I didnt feel as though I was doing enough to help my community, and it was there that I decided to enrol in University. In 2017 I graduated my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Criminology, and am currently completing fourth-year psychology, with the plan to apply for Masters next year. I have been working in Youth Mental Health for nearly 3 years and have found this to be both a challenging and rewarding role. My role as an Aboriginal Mental Health Professional means that I work with young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing mental health difficulties. During my time in this role, I have seen how easy it is for our mob to fall through the gaps and not get the support that is needed for them to achieve positive outcomes. This has further sparked an interest in me to explore ways to help increase safety to access services and live a healthy and positive life. Another striking observation I have is about the limited education on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health in training. It would be greatly beneficial to include more knowledge in the universities on Aboriginal mental health, not only in Medicine, Social Work, Psychology, and other allied health professions but also across the board. I am passionate about youth mental health and what can be done to reduce suicide and incarceration rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. I am also interested in incorporating my knowledge of animals to help in the therapeutic space. In the future, I hope to be able to work in the prison system to help prevent the cycle of reoffending and support our young mob to be safely rehabilitated back into the community. I would like to approach the issue of injustice within the justice system, particularly regarding mental health in a holistic way to increase safe and supported rehabilitation and lower the recidivism rate of young people in the community. I hope that by being a part of the Miss NAIDOC Perth program, I will be able to demonstrate to other young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls that they can reach their dreams despite what others may say. Young women are just as capable of being in professional roles and having a voice in the community.

07.01.2022 Trees have a natural ability to survive through bushfires and extreme heat climates. Even when the tree dies and falls over, the outside of the wood will natura...lly close, trapping any moisture inside. The only way to counter this is to split your wood, and expose the inner core to let it naturally dry out. We have a host of how to videos on our website so you know EXACTLY how to treat your firewood. . . . . . . #wood #woodheating #heating #homes #natural #land #trees #fire #woodfire See more
