25.01.2022 Hannah is very excited to be a sponsor at Denman horse Trials this year! Denman is our favourite event each year but we weren't quick enough to get an entry in, so instead Hannah will be there in spirit as a sponsor. Keep an eye out for the sponsored showjump!

25.01.2022 Shoeing radiographs can be a helpful tool to assist your farrier with precise shoe placement and remedial podiatry. If your horse has a club foot, flat heels, laminitis, history of navicular pain, pedal bone fracture or arthritis a collaborative approach with farrier and vet can be the vital tool in return to athletic soundness. We are so spoilt in the Hunter Valley to have some of Australia’s most skilled and knowledgeable farriers on our doorstep. At your next appointment ask your farrier if xrays would be helpful for your horse. Pictured below is a pony with chronic laminitis and a Thoroughbred with heel pain.

24.01.2022 Our portable ultrasound allows Hannah to perform an abdominal ultrasound on colic patients in the field. An initial colic abdominal ultrasound takes 10-20 minutes where we assess structures such as: Stomach size and contents Duodenal size and activity Small intestine size, wall thickness and activity Large intestine position, wall thickness, contents... Spleen, kidneys, liver appearance and position Free peritoneal fluid Other organs/tissues such as a pregnant uterus This gives us so much more information about the possible cause, structures involved and the treatment your colicky horse needs. We have found this dramatically improves colic outcomes. See more

20.01.2022 Why is the annual dental so important for your horse? Horses are hypsodonts, meaning their teeth grow constantly to allow for the grinding action that is crucial for breaking down a fibrous diet. But it also means they rapidly develop sharp enamel points on the edges of their cheek teeth. These can cause cheek ulceration, trauma from the bit and many other painful oral conditions. So, is your horse just being naughty, or is oral pain the cause of the poor performance? Call Hannah to get your horse’s mouth checked out. Photo https://valleyvet.ca/equine-services/dentistry/

18.01.2022 The all important first drink of colostrum provides the foal with IgG’s which are vital for formation of the foal’s immune system. A simple blood test when the foal is 12-24 hours old will confirm that they have or haven’t consumed enough good quality colostrum to form a healthy immune system. . . . #equinevet #foalingseason #breedingseason #foalsofinstagram #horsesofinstagram #equestrian

17.01.2022 Rearing, bucking, lack of engagement/suppleness, stopping at jumps...could your horse have back pain? A thorough examination, X-rays and an ultrasound might give you some answers. Kissing spines, arthritis, malformations, ligament damage and muscle pain can all contribute to back pain and be a significant source of poor performance.

15.01.2022 Are you breeding a maiden or empty mare this year? Make sure they have an Equilume mask and a rug on from June. This will help with an earlier return to normal oestrous cycling in Spring. Call Hannah on 0425 352 319 to find out more about how mare's shut down over Winter and have a transitional period in early Spring. https://equilume.com

12.01.2022 Newborn foals need a vet check at 12-24 hours of age. This includes a full physical examination and an IgG blood test to ensure the foal has received enough antibodies from the mare's milk. When detected early, issues are normally easier (and less costly) to treat.

11.01.2022 Hannah offers a full range of equine veterinary services to horses in the Lower Hunter Valley. She has an interest in lameness and loves the challenge of helping a horse return to its previous level of performance after an injury.

10.01.2022 How are your bandaging skills? Hock bandaging can be difficult and frustrating with frequent slipping and breakages over the point of the hock. Hannah can help with your horse's hock wounds and give you some bandaging tips and tricks.

08.01.2022 Who has a foal arriving in the next few months? Don't forget your mare will need a tetanus vaccination 4 weeks prior to foaling. This provides the foal with antibodies that will protect it for the first few months of life.

07.01.2022 Eyes that are squinting, runny, swollen or cloudy are an emergency! Waiting 24 hours can be the difference between a good outcome and a disaster. Call Hannah on 0425 352 319 find out more.

04.01.2022 Mares that are approaching their due date will begin to bag up and should be monitored closely for hints they may be foaling soon. This may include waxing up, behaviours changes, lying down more often, an increase in temperature, an elongated vulva and softening of the ligaments around the tail head. Prior to foaling the mare should be moved into a safe paddock that has been spelled to reduce manure contamination and the mare should be de-wormed.

04.01.2022 Book 5 dentals (same property, same day) and save $20 off each horse.
