25.01.2022 Years and years ago I worked with a woman who hated the term ladies. She found it patronising and condescending, and it made sense when she explained it to me. Ever since then, I’ve been really mindful of how I address people, especially in emails, messages, etc. I have to admit, I’ve struggled to stop saying guys and do drop the odd dude. So glad to get my hands on some new options today

22.01.2022 I wrote something a little bit different and published it on Medium. My first article for a while! I'd love to know what you think. https://hmwords.medium.com/a-toddler-mums-guide-to-reducing

20.01.2022 What makes people good communicators is, in essence, an ability not to be fazed by the more problematic or offbeat aspects of their own characters. They can contemplate their anger, their sexuality, and their unpopular, awkward, or unfashionable opinions without losing confidence or collapsing into self-disgust. They can speak clearly because they have managed to develop a priceless sense of their own acceptability. They like themselves well enough to believe that they are worthy of, and can win, the goodwill of others if only they have the wherewithal to present themselves with the right degree of patience and imagination. https://www.brainpickings.org//alain-de-botton-the-course/

16.01.2022 Feminism. It’s not just for women.

14.01.2022 Something is always born of excess: great art was born of great terrors, great loneliness, great inhibitions, instabilities, and it always balances them. Anais Nin Brain Pickings is probably my all time favourite blog. Maria Popova's writing speaks straight to my soul, and each one of her posts is a beautiful rabbit hole of books and other articles to read about all forms of art and science. ... I have purchased a great many books through the site but often I don't even need to read any more, such is Maria's talent for pulling out the most interesting and poignant parts of other people's work, and connecting them. Also, this article explains a lot for me, as someone whose natural state of being could be described as of "emotional excess" It also links to a whole pile of other valuable writing resources https://www.brainpickings.org//anais-nin-on-emotion-and-w/

13.01.2022 After much deliberation and procrastination (is there any other way?) I changed the name of my Facebook community. The old name (Strategic Bloggers Inc) hadn't been sitting right for a while. When I started it in a previous lifetime (a hundred years ago in early 2019), it was because I was excited about blogging. I had so much to share about what I had learned, and I attracted a bunch of awesome people who wanted to learn more about blogging too. The problem is, I no longer ...stay up late at night thinking about strategies for driving traffic and monetisation. SEO and website design are important, but not the things I'm reading about in the latest research. Don't get me wrong. I still LOVE blogging. But I love it because it is a tool that harnesses the power of words and the internet to make change. I believe that every writer is a change maker. If you are writing something for someone else to read, then there is a reason for that. Whether you're hoping to see a change in thought or action, you're aiming for change, no matter how big or small. Whether you like it or not, if you're a writer, you're a change-maker. And so that's how I got to Online Writing for Change Makers Blogging is so much more than online writing; and online writing is so much more than blogging. The new name allows me to dig deeper into the things I'm really passionate about; like finding purpose in our work, clarity in our message, constructing stories and powerful arguments, and the impact we can have when we use words effectively. This applies not only to blogging, but to our social media posts, email, website copy, anything we write online (and offline too as it happens but let’s not get too excited here ). I've had a positive response from the group so far and if you're already a member, I hope you'll stick with me for the ride ahead. If you haven't joined yet, then maybe this is your sign Or maybe you know a change maker, who might benefit from a safe place to learn and share? Please let them know about us! https://www.facebook.com/groups/strategicbloggersinc/ (P.S. I haven't changed the link yet, I have not yet prepared myself for the task of going through all my shit and updating all the links )

12.01.2022 Tell your story. Shout it. Write it. Whisper it if you have to. But tell it. Some won't understand it.... Some will outright reject it. But many will thank you for it. And then the most magical thing will happen. One by one, voices will start whispering, "me too." And your tribe will gather. And you will never feel alone again. L.R. 11.01.2022 Just found a photo from my 21st birthday that I’ve never seen before (it came from my late Aunty’s place). I haven’t changed a bit! May your weekend be filled with cake or whatever gives you such half-lidded joy as this

11.01.2022 You've just written a book about your life. What's it called?

06.01.2022 I have a new piece of writing to write. I don't really know what it is yet. So, I've been journalling a lot, hoping some things will rise to the surface. This morning's session has not yet magically produced the answers but it has got me thinking about how much we can learn through the simple act of writing. I started a list of the skills and attributes we can develop through writing. Top of mind came:... Empathy Leadership Self-awareness Resilience Reflection Curiosity Clarity of thought Stress management What do you think? What would you add?

05.01.2022 I want to do hard things... I just want them to be easy. Is that too much to ask???

05.01.2022 I wanted to share this incredibly eye-opening piece of writing from one of the amazing creatives in my writing community. I love that it is so open and honest but also that it takes something very personal and specific (her experience living with ADHD and Aspergers) and tunes into the universal experience of feeling frustrated and completely misunderstood. This is the one of the keys to great life writing! https://www.avanthiravindran.com.au//love-for-what-i-was-/ You can j...oin Writing for Change Makers here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/strategicbloggersinc #findyourvoice #tellyourstory

04.01.2022 I always thought feminism was a pretty simple concept. Let’s try and make things fair for a group of people who have been treated less than for a long, long time. Simple, yeah? But when I decided to write about it, I assumed there was more than I understood. Academic theory, literature. History of course. So I started reading as much as I could, following feminist writers and influencers. I learned about how in a system that protects and grows the wealth of a few old wh...ite men at the cost of the wellbeing of so many others, I have more privilege than most. The patriarchy is far more brutal for women of other races, abilities, economic standings, religions, identities and orientations. Not too difficult to understand, when you consider how we got to this point. Consider the concepts of: Colonialism: the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically. Capitalism: an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. While the stories are many and complex and varied, the underlying principle is actually very simple. If we are about helping people who are hurt by the system, then we sure as fuck are intersectional feminists. If we hear someone say they’re hurting, we listen. The problem is, in my privilege, I don’t always hear. And most likely in the way I tell my stories, I don’t always invite everyone to speak up. And so that is my is my challenge! To open myself up more, so that I can help more people. But hasn’t that always been the challenge?? @frances.squiggle #womenwhowrite #womensupportwomen #raisingfeminists #femaleblogger #womansupportingwomen #womenownedbusiness #perthblogger #lmbdw #blogginggals #bloggingadvice #melbourneblogger #writercommunity #writerlife #creativecommunity #writersoninstagram #findyourvoice #feelthefearanddoitanyway #bravewriterlifestyle #tellyourstory #fuckfear #journalling #feministaf #writingcourse #findyourpurpose #womeninmedicine #femaleowned #feminists #feministasfuck See more

04.01.2022 The reward for a lifetime putting caring for others ahead of your own right to earn an income is the very real risk of living out of your car in this country... I am often lectured about how much providing free childcare would cost $8 billion terrifying dollars of taxpayers money. Yet, the Grattan Institute estimates that if women increased their participation in the workforce by just 6%, it would add about $25 billion to the economy. Talk about a decent ROI. There has eve...n just been a study from the WGEA that shows companies headed by women provide much better returns to shareholders. Yet none of this logic, evidence or even hard, cold economic benefit appears to be making a dent in the stubborn refusal by conservative men to take the contribution and rights of women seriously. https://www.thebigsmoke.com.au//canberras-recession-respo/

03.01.2022 Best parenting books? I often turn to books when working through a challenge, and of course parenting is one of the more difficult challenges many of us deal with in our lives. I thought I had read heaps of books on the topic but when I went through my Kindle, there are four although I'm sure that many others, not specifically about parenting, have shaped my approach to being a mum. These are the parenting books in my library:... - No Bad Kids by Janet Lansbury - No-Drama Discipline by Daniel J. Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson - Raising Boys by Steve Biddulph - The Conscious Parent by Shefali Tsabary I have taken away good things from all of them. What books would you recommend to someone looking to build their parenting resources?
