25.01.2022 Today the parking inspector was back on the job. Perched above the car park this young male has his eye on a girl friend and has also been sleeping on the job but he remains ready to welcome all sanctuary visitors. Bookings essential. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #koalasofinstagram

23.01.2022 81mm of rain received in the last 6 days. Southwest River is running hard and fast into Hanson Bay. The brownish color is due to the tannins in the leaves. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia

22.01.2022 Look at all this fresh digging I found yesterday. All done by one active echidna. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #echidnasofinstagram #gardening

22.01.2022 As we turn the page on 2020, and peer into the future, we know one thing for certain: We appreciate all of you. It's been a rough ride, not just for us but all around the globe, and flipping the calendar doesn't make everything okay again, but it does give us an opportunity to take a breath and watch natures remarkable recovery happening around us. We thank you for your continued support and hope you can come visit in 2021. #authenticKI #southaustralia #seesouthaustralia #seeaustralia #sealinkkangarooisland #kangarooislandconnect #AATKingsAustralia #exceptionalkangarooisland #raf.peeters #clelandwildlifepark

21.01.2022 Spring is here. I think this is Senecio pinnatafolius aka Variable groundsel. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #wildflowers

21.01.2022 A big thank you to the Senate environment and communications committee for visiting HBWS during the regional hearings as part of the faunal extinction enquiry. We greatly appreciate your interest and taking the time to listen and for planting trees. @sarah_hansonyoung @senatorsammcmahon @senator__smith #senatorfawcett #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia

20.01.2022 We joyfully announce the debut of Phoenix daughter of Holly. This photo was taken@clelandwildlifepark by @ashhunter1 Ashleigh (Ash) was one of the Cleland triage team that helped us in the dark days of January. Holly was rescued (and named) by Ash and the team and only much later they discovered that Holly was carrying a fire baby. Last month when I visited Cleland I thought it appropriate to name her Phoenix. There are many fire babies at HBWS (mostly kangaroo and wallaby bu...t also brush tail possum and koala).Keeping with longstanding tradition very few will be named. I hope to post photos of Phoenix's HBWS bushfire baby cousins in the near future. I have seen them but just can't get a good shot yet. Please come visit and bring your camera. As the weather warms and they spend more time out of the pouch my chances will get better. Like Phoenix, HBWS is slowly rising from the ashes and we grow more confident that the best is yet to come. I would like to express our gratitude to all those who have rallied around us from all over the world. They are too many to name but I would like to mention Emergency Support Force 1st Armoured Regiment - Australian Army The Duntroon Society South Australia Cleland Wildlife Park #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #koalasofinstagram @southaustralia See more

20.01.2022 I saw 3 echidna on HBWS today including this one who appeared to be enjoying the spring weather. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #echidnasofinstagram

19.01.2022 A genuine bushfire baby. Photo taken yesterday by our guests on tour. This is very late in the season for such a young joey. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #koalasofinstagram #wildkoala

17.01.2022 47mm of rain over the weekend. Finally some run off into our big dam.

16.01.2022 Thank you to the senators from the Environment and Communications Committee who visited as part of the regional hearing for the faunal extinctction enquiry #hansonbaywildlifesanctuary #authenticki #seesouthaustralia #seeaustralia

12.01.2022 Keep up the great work team. We are so happy to work with you at HBWS.

12.01.2022 Mating season is warming up. Will this male find a mate? He has managed to get rid of those smoky smells. Come visit to follow his progress #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #koalasofinstagram #wildkoala

12.01.2022 Bush stone Curlew. I went through 11000 images from motion sensitive camera traps last night. The modern cameras are really user friendly and have amazing memory cards and batteries that allow the cameras to remain in the field for months at a time. HBWS has been historically known to be a curlew hot spot. Anyone who has been on our nocturnal tour will remember their haunting cries. Sunset walks will recommence soon. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #birdsofinstagram

12.01.2022 Thank you for all the amazing support. Please see below for our latest update from 18August. Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is so grateful to all of you!

11.01.2022 I found this echidna yesterday. Based on his large size I am guessing he's a male but I didn't invade his personal space to do an inspection. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #echidnasofinstagram

11.01.2022 The Easter weather was stunning. This girl looks like she was waiting for her nails to dry before going on a picnic. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #koalasofinstagram #wildkoala #seasonsgreet

10.01.2022 I call this area Yacka Stonehenge. I dont know what the druids of nature had in mind when they created this line of yackas. The first photo was taken on 21.1.20 (18 days post fire) the second was taken last week on 4.8.20 the black trunks grow about 1cm per year. The spikes (the yackas flower) grows up to 5cm per day! The spikes are bright green as they grow then turn white as the flowering commences. On average yacka will only produce a spike every 5 years but this species is fire responsive and the fire triggered this extraordinary burst of activity.

08.01.2022 This could be your view on Christmas morning! @hansonbaywildlifesanctuary has had a last minute covid cancellation and Stormy Petrel and Cygnet are available during the upcoming holidays. Email [email protected] for details. #seesouthaustralia #authenticki #hansonbay #seeaustralia #christmasatthebeach #newyearsatthebeach #newyear

08.01.2022 Not many people I know would brag about how well their termites are doing. At HBWS the termite mounds got hit very hard in the fire. This really worried me because I saw it as the nursery burning down ( for echidnas and goannas). Well I am pleased to report that the termites have been very industrious building new mounds that will soon double as modern climate controlled nurseries.

07.01.2022 We are very thankful for the recent rain which is helping thousands of wild flowers to start blooming. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #wildflowers

07.01.2022 One of the few sources of nectar available this year in the fire grounds is from the yacka spikes. The insects are a valuable food source for smaller birds.#authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #yackasofinstagram

07.01.2022 The Hanson bay cabins Cygnet and Stormy Petrel have reopened and are the only accommodation located right on the wilderness trail.

07.01.2022 Look into my eyes. This yacka has an ankle length skirt which tells me it dodged the fire. It also means it only has 1 in 5 chance of flowering this year. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #yackasofinstagram

07.01.2022 Beautiful autumn flowers on the pigface. Did you know there about 20 species of pigface but only 4 that are endemic to Australia. Most of the others are from South Africa. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia

06.01.2022 This is a genuine bushfire baby, conceived during the fire and now thriving in the wild at HBWS. A big thanks to #laurent_v3 and Katya for visiting and for sharing this photo. BTW we have at least 4 koala joeys but I need expert photographers to record their baby photos so please come visit and bring that giant lens! #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #koalasofinstagram #wildkoala #baby

05.01.2022 Stars of hope from Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley Every June and July they hold a critter camp for local 7-10 year olds. The stars were made and sent as a sign of goodwill and encouragement in response to the fires. We received them at HBWS in December. Thanks to Cassie for the photo

05.01.2022 Filmed at HBWS a couple of years ago. I must say I was a bit skeptical when I first heard about the robotic koala but you can't argue with results.

04.01.2022 This is another shot from the same motion sensitive camera. This time it is a cape Barren goose. I have no idea why he is standing on the termite mound but certainly the view is better from up there. The geese had an excellent breeding season (they are one of our abundant species) and there are many young about at the moment. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #birdsofinstagram #geeseofinstagram

04.01.2022 Wishing everyone a healthy, happy and safe holiday season and a much improved new year. The last 12 months have been very turbulant at HBWS.On 12/1/20 in the first weeks after the fire we were greatly assisted by 85 members of 1st Armoured Regiment - Australian Army and many other groups and individuals. I would especially like to mention Dr Rachel Westcott savem.org.au, Ian Hough and team Cleland Wildlife Park for their dispassionate approach and advice. It has been a ve...ry tough year in the travel business and we would like to say thanks to our many customers but especially the team at SeaLink Kangaroo Island and AAT Kings - Australia for their flexibility and generosity. I sincerely hope you will be able to come and visit soon to witness the resilience of the wildlife and recovery of the landscape. I am confident that our best days lie ahead of us. See more

03.01.2022 Meanwhile at HBWS: If these 2 had read the script they were both meant to exit stage left in unison. The joy of spring. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #echidnasofinstagram

03.01.2022 The kangaroos are getting very comfortable with these quiet winter days ( we closed for a couple days to burn some large piles) #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #kangaroosofinstagram

02.01.2022 Cygnet and Stormy Petrel cabins have reopened and can only be booked by email [email protected] #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia

02.01.2022 After excellent rain in early October springtime has really arrived at HBWS and the wildlife are taking full advantage of the bountiful season.

02.01.2022 Another bushfire baby photographed on Friday by Nelly a volunteer from Provence. I must say it again but these joeys are a miracle of nature having been conceived during the fire. Let's hope it doesn't another one in its life time (or mine). #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia #koalasofinstagram #wildkoala #abc #ABCmyphoto

01.01.2022 Like this goanna HBWS is carefully navigating the changed landscape which we both now occupy. We are both also taking advantage of the nice weather. When permissible please come for a visit. Book a cabin or do a tour. #authenticki #seeaustralia #seesouthaustralia
