16.01.2022 Even if you have a really well-trained horse that uses the thinking side of his brain 99 percent of the time, there’s still a one percent chance that he’ll use ...the reactive side. No matter how well trained a horse is, every once in a while, the reactive side of his brain is going to show up. The downside is you never know when the reactive side is going to pop up. But here’s the good news: Anytime your horse uses the reactive side of his brain, all you have to do to get him back to using the thinking side is move his feet forwards, backwards, left and right and reward the slightest try. - Clinton #ApplyTheMethod

12.01.2022 Bitting Tip November 26, 2015 Things to keep in mind when adjusting your bit / headstall / curb -A horse learns from the release of pressure -Every horse has d...ifferent interdental space, past history of bitting, and preference as to where they prefer contact within the mouth and / or head -Experiment with adjustments on your headstall and find where your horse likes it the best -After adjusting your headstall you then need to address the curb chain / strap, there needs to be a release from the curb when your hand releases the bit, otherwise the horse never gets a release -Some gag bits do not require much for curb or none at all only a cord to maintain the cheeks from flipping around -Consider the difference in a two hand training run to a one hand rodeo run, is the bit / headstall / curb giving the same signal with two hands as it is with one you may need to adjust your equipment accordingly -Allow your horse to maintain his balance throughout your barrel run, do not create an imbalance with your bit that may hinder your horse from running and turning as natural as possible -Any questions are welcome See more
10.01.2022 If you want your horse to change, you have to be willing to change first. That is the most important concept you can understand when it comes to training horses.... When I was an apprentice for Ian Francis, he often said to me, To change your life, you must first change your attitude. Ian believes, as do I, that if you’re unhappy with the current state of your life, you need to change your attitude and live your life the way you’d like for it to be. I’ve incorporated that saying into training horses If you want to change your horse, you must first change the way you interact with him. When you interact with your horse in a way that he understands, you’ll get results. But if you keep doing the same thing, you’ll keep getting the same results. If you want a different reaction from your horse and want to progress your horsemanship, you’ll have to change the way you work around him and start seeing things from his point of view. 07.01.2022 You’ve probably heard the old cowboy logic, When you get bucked off, you have to get right back up on that bronc and show him who’s boss! I don’t believe in t...hat. If I get bucked off a horse, the last thing I ever do is get straight back on him. If you get right back on, chances are he’s just going to buck you off again. It’s just that simple. Instead, figure out why he’s bucking. Usually, the answer is because you’ve done a poor job of preparation on the ground. Remember what my mentor Gordon McKinlay told me: The more times you pick yourself up off the ground, the better your groundwork gets. It really is true. Every time I got bucked off a colt it was because I did a poor job of preparing the horse for the ride. Groundwork exercises are designed so that you can get control of your horse’s feet and mind on the ground before getting in the saddle. So, as long as you’re not injured, immediately put the horse’s feet to work. If you are injured, you may have to put the horse away. That’s never an ideal situation, because then the horse realizes that bucking you off got a release of pressure; however, sometimes you have to do what you have to do. But the next time you get the horse out, you’d be smart to be thorough with your groundwork. In fact, you may spend three or four days focusing on groundwork to prepare him to be ridden again. - Clinton #ApplyTheMethod
07.01.2022 Always end a training session on a good note. The last thing you do with your horse today is the first thing he'll remember tomorrow. So don’t finish a training... session with the horse misbehaving or having a bad attitude. If you're not having any success on a particular exercise and you have to quit due to time restraints, stop what you're doing and go to an exercise you know your horse can do well. That way you can finish the training session on something the horse is comfortable with, performs well and is listening to you. You always want to finish when the horse is confident, listening to you and using the thinking side of his brain. - Clinton #ApplyTheMethod See more
