21.01.2022 We had a wonderful time at the Evaluation and International Speech Club Contests last Wednesday. We were over the moon when we saw a few visitors drop in at the contests. We hope to see you at our club meetings in the future. The fun you had on Wednesday was just the tip of the iceberg. Come to our club meetings to discover the "iceberg". During the International Speech Contest, we heard three gripping speeches presented by Gorden Chen, Graeme Dunlop and Bharat Sangekar. ... As the contest poster says "May the Speech Be With You", hope the message behind each speech stays with you till we meet again at next year's contests. During the Evaluation Speech Contest, we were fortunate to have Annette Jacobsen as our test speaker. She delivered an informative and riveting speech "Suffrage is Not a Dirty Word". Tom came first with his well-structured, spot-on and personalised evaluation. Club contest season for the HappyHour Club is officially over. All contests exceeded our expectations, thanks to our VPE Eliza and other committee members who contributed their time to organising, promoting and running the contests.

Ballot counter Voting judge Tiebreaking judge If you'd like to be a contestant at either the Table Topics or Humorous Speech contest, or take up one of the above roles, please drop an email to our VPE Eliza at [email protected]. 18.01.2022 Here is Bharat's speech A Conscious Choice at 2019 Toastmasters International Speech Contest Final that we've been boasting about. Hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did.

18.01.2022 The curtain of 2019 Toastmasters International Speech Contest was brought down on 24 August. Bharat Sangekar presented his speech "The Scriptwriter" at the Semi-finals, and made it to the Finals with other five contestants. Although Bharat's speech at the Finals was not one of the top three in the judges' eyes, to the Happy Hour he is the champion! We are very proud of the achievement Bharat has made and can't wait for him to come back and celebrate it with him. We are su...re this year will not be the last year where we see our club members competing on the international stage. As a famous Chinese proverb says, "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step". If you also want to put your public speaking skills to the test, why not start your international contest journey by attending our upcoming club contests on 4 September and 2 October? We will post details on the club contests in a separate FB post. Stay tuned!

16.01.2022 16 October - Gosh Darn! Meeting It was back to our regular meeting format after the conclusion of our club contests, with the meeting theme "Gosh Darn!" We were thrilled to welcome two new members to the club and see some familiar faces back as well. Our Toastmaster of the day and President Graeme led us through a fun meeting, animated as ever. Our grammarian Mads gave us the word of the day "Poppycock!" After a hilarious round robin where we told the group recent "Gosh dar...n!" moments, we heard from Zola, Fina and Yash in the table topics (expertly run by May), then heard Zola's icebreaker where she took us back in time to when she would ask her mum, "why am I not taller?" and Eliza's intro to mentoring speech. After a round of expert evaluations and leader reports from Gordon, Graeme, Mads, May, Yash and Tom, we finished our night by heading out to our local Thai place for some curry, stir fry and wine. If you are interested in visiting our club, shoot Gordon our VPM an email at [email protected]. Our next meeting is 5.30pm, 30 October. Until next time!

15.01.2022 At Happy Hour Toastmasters we had our first virtual meeting tonight! Keeping upbeat and connected!

14.01.2022 Our Table Topics and Humorous Speech Contests took place last Wednesday. We’d like to say THANK YOU to our VPE Eliza Renouf for organising and chairing the contests, our Sergeant-At-Arms Tom Skoroplas for ordering pizza and drinks, and 5 judges from other clubs for taking up the role. We laughed our heads off while watching Bharat Sangekar compete against Graeme Dunlop at Humorous Speech Contest. We also enjoyed watching Gordon Chen, James Barillaro, Graeme Dunlop, Bharat S...angekar, and Tom Skoroplas present their diverse responses to the table topic question. Congratulations to Bharat for winning the Humour Speech Contest and Graeme for winning the Table Topics Contest. Thanks everyone for coming and helping out. We look forward to seeing everyone again at our next club contests. Please stay tuned for the announcement of our Evaluation and International Speech Contests.

13.01.2022 No news is good news, and no news is good news unless it is shared on FB! We are very proud to share with you that the Happy Hour Toastmasters Club was awarded the Distinguished Club for 2019-2010! We have been receiving this honour for 10 years in a row! A club must meet all the required goals for Education, Membership, Training and Administration to be recognised as a Distinguished Club. We wouldn't have been able to achieve those goals if not for the commitments and d...edication of our previous and current committee members. What's even better this year is that our club had a 'monopoly' on the winners at the Area Club Contests. Graeme Dunlop came first in the Table Topics Contest, and the winners for the Evaluation, Humorous Speech and International Speech contests all went to Bharat Sangekar! Bharat wasn't at the meeting when the area director presented the trophies, so Graeme ran away with all four trophies (just kidding)!

05.01.2022 Everything in moderation except TM meetings. This week we gathered again only a week after our last meeting. This week’s meeting theme was ‘the unexpected’.... In line with the theme, Tom unexpectedly changed the usual course of the Table Topics section. He randomly picked each participant and did not reveal the question until the participant was standing on stage. James was asked to talk about what he would do after his doctor told him that he’d been diagnosed with cancer and only got a few days left. James handled the question with humour and optimism and created us a mental image of him taking the train to Darwin to enjoy the last few days of his life with contentment. May described a three-course meal she’d like to have if she did not need to foot the bill. Madina explained why birds were the animals she’d like to turn into if given a chance. During the Prepared Speech Section, Marina talked about Nonviolent Communication and the book with the same name written by Marshall Rosenberg. In the book, Rosenberg argued that Blaming and punishing others are superficial expressions of anger." At the core of all anger is a need that is not being fulfilled." Graeme talked about ‘analytical’ being his preferred communication style. Did you know that there are four communication styles: Analytical, Direct, Initiating and Supportive? Are you curious about what your preferred communication style is and how it affects the way you give and receive information? If you are, why not join TM and find it out?

04.01.2022 At this week’s meeting, our veteran club member and a natural inspirational speaker Bharat took the role of the TM of the Day. Bharat kept a lively and delightful atmosphere throughout the meeting with the enthusiasm and positive energy he always carries with himself. We heard three interesting prepared speeches at the meeting. May offered us a glimpse into her culture by talking about a 15-day Cambodian religious festival, the Ghost Festival, during which Cambodians pay... their respects to deceased relatives. Both Graeme and Emma reflected on their experiences of being a mentee at work. Do you know that all new members at our club can participate in the TM mentoring program and be guided and mentored by an experienced member? The highlight of the meeting was when Chris jumped into the role of Table Topics Master last minute and intertwined three Table Topic questions with some funny personal stories. The story that made everyone burst into laughter was about how he managed to wipe his nose without a tissue in public without raising any eyebrows. If you wonder how he did it, check out the 6 burst photos of him!

03.01.2022 On 2 October, we will hold our Evaluation and International Speech Contests. As Master Yoda once said, Do. Or do not. There is no try. So don’t tell yourself you will try to make it. Come and join us at 5:45pm on Wednesday 2 October in Room 1.10, 50 Lonsdale St Melbourne. We guarantee you will hear some speeches that will stay with you and keep inspiring and motivating you till you attend our club contests next year. This is not a mere puff. This is the author of this post talking from experience :) If you’re already feeling the force, can’t wait to take up the challenge and be a contestant at either of those contests, let our VPE Eliza know by dropping her an email at [email protected].
