25.01.2022 Walk time! A tired hufky is a happy hufky! Momo is too stuffed to get out of bed Do your hufkies howl in bed too and cant be bothered to lift up their head? After a lazy day indoors yesterday, we did lots of training out on our walk this morning and agility work. I couldve done training yesterday at home but I was too focused on my jigsaw What training work do you do with your kids, share in the comments!

Its all too easy to throw your dog into the car and let them lose at the park and then end up at the vet. So Oberon got the garden hose treatment this evening, dont think for a second our boys get the red carpet BUT, I do want to say to check your dogs bums and yep, if its there , get a tissue and remove it from the glare

22.01.2022 I didnt think wed come this far but dont underestimate a hufky Two months ago Momo wouldnt sit and stay. Hed get up as soon as I walk away or move. We did progress to him staying put a bit longer but as soon as I go behind him hed get up. See, practise makes near perfect Im not a dog trainer, just remembering what Ive been taught at dog school which is more important for me than the dog! 21.01.2022 A few of you were asking how Momo is such a good boy and just lies there to be manhandled. He wasnt always like this and its taken time. Start off with treats. HIGH VALUE rewards they only get if theyre very good. Things like roast chicken, cheese, fish treats are great. And maybe have two of you, one to clean, one to keep feeding. Start with 5- 20 seconds of cleaning up or brushing, and over time you can lengthen this out to a few minutes and longer.... Now, some dogs are not food motivated! What are you going to do? Some just love being told what good kids they are so praise them while youre wiping or brushing. Other dogs have a favourite toy so use that to distract them. Consistency is the key. If youre having trouble with training, then thats where dog trainers come in to help you. Any comments? Pop them below!

21.01.2022 Hope you guys enjoyed the podcast I put up from The Canine Paradigm. They are all very entertaining insightful shows (thanks Glenn and Pat ). We all have WET smelly dogs now with all this rain The best thing I can recommend is to dry them off with the blower or towel as best you can, and then brush them thoroughly later on . Practise paws (see my earlier video) and pick the right time.

20.01.2022 Hey guys, I hope you are all doing ok I am lucky enough to be giving my boys a groom tomorrow and am thinking of you all every day! Based on the announcement yesterday, it looks like Ill be able to re-open on Mon Sept 28th, or it could be Oct 26 . Ill know more in the next few days when they outline which industries can reopen. I wont be re-scheduling any appointments until the opening date is confirmed. Unfortunately most dogs will be in urgent need of grooming by... then if they arent already. I will do my best to accommodate everyone as quick as I can. First preference will be to those who had pre-booked appointments and missed their appointments during lock-down followed by those on the waiting list. The reality is some dogs will be matted and I will have no choice but to go short. Its not my preferred option but I will not cause any dog pain for the sake of de-matting. We are lucky to be going into warmer weather and dog fur grows It may just take a couple of weeks to get back to normal length. 18.01.2022 Im not waiting for any official updates. After a good nights sleep, clarity of mind prevails and Happy Husky Grooming will be taking a short break for these 6 weeks . Im no martyr and I could sure enjoy a good rest and come back rejuvenated and refreshed to help you guys have beautiful clean pups again! More importantly, we need to also help lead the way, and slow down the spread by stopping the movement of people. 6 weeks is only 6 weeks, we only know how fast that p...asses when youre on holiday, so use it wisely and do all those things youve wanted to do but never had time for! Dunno bout you but Ive got a mountain of things I wanna do Ill be in touch with those of you booked in this month and next and see what we can fit in. Its not all going to go to plan. There are only so many hours in a day and each big dog takes up to 2 hours. Theres just the 2 of us, and we have 3 dogs as well so go do the maths. If you live more than 5km away from us then well need to reschedule or cancel. 6 weeks is only 6 weeks and theres no need to fork out $1600 (unless you dont need it you can give it to me ). ... BUT I would recommend you get that brush out and start brushing If your brush is half chewed up, falling apart, or just isnt the right one, let me know and I can send you one. No excuses like you didnt have time or werent home ! Since we are also all at home with the puppies, you can remove their collars (please apply common sense!), so it doesnt leave a mark and matt the fur like in the photo below. You can also get limited slip collars that arent chokingly tight all the time. Mask up Shien

16.01.2022 The boys went to see Sarah at Canine Balance today Fat Toad for his ongoing and improving groin ligament injury, and Lord Oberon for his growing old back aches. Fatty will start a hydrotherapy programme when the weather is suitable as his leg muscles are wasting. Its a catch 22 when you cant take him for long walks. The smart arse had a massage and is in pretty good nick. I have learnt some awesome moves from Sarah to work on all of them for everyday happy healthy living More info below in comments!

14.01.2022 This is a slightly longer post. So if you haven't got the attention of a dog flea, read on ! I'm not all about smiley dogs and animal welfare is very much in my blood. Well, the number of dogs I've had come through caked in grass seeds is like , and matted, with burrs ... . I'd like to give you some insight into a groomer's daily job ... We only see your dogs every 6 weeks or so each year, sometimes it’s longer like once a year! We only have about 2.5 to 3 hours to groom your dog each session. Can you imagine standing for that long to have your hair cut? It's your responsibility to brush and maintain your dog's fur at home. Groomers are no magicians. We cannot produce the styles you want if we're presented with a dog that's matted and hasn't been brushed regularly. If your dogs don't enjoy you brushing them at home, they will not enjoy being brushed by the groomer. Owners often say "I brush him everyday" . If your groomer tells you your dog is matted, it's likely you're using the wrong tools or method to brush your dog. Your groomer will be more than happy to show you how to do it properly at home because it makes grooming sessions at the salon more enjoyable for your dog and groomer . It's important to keep your fur babies on a regular grooming schedule so it's a routine and not feel like punishment. A dog that is always matted and visits the groomer every 3-6 months/once a year see grooming as a punishment, while a dog that is groomed every 4-8 weeks see it as a part of their life. Another point, did you know your dogs are like little children and they know how to manipulate! I'm sure most of you have heard owners saying, "my dog starts shaking when it arrives at the groomer", and how many times did the groomer say "your dog is fine as soon as you leave the salon". Dogs absorb your emotions and feed off your nervous energy. I can't tell you how many times I've had a dog who behaved perfectly on the table but starts to carry on like it's being tortured as soon as mummy or daddy walks in the door. We're in the profession because it's our passion and our love of dogs or cats. Dog grooming is a very skilled job with long hours, it’s physically demanding and emotionally draining. Please respect and appreciate your groomer .

I see so many posts about peoples huskies not wanting eat even after theyve fed them every exotic thing under the sun. So heres my solution. Put the bowl away and take your dog and their breakfast/dinner for a walk. Make it interesting and rewarding . Call their name, feed them a biscuit. 09.01.2022 IM LIKE my PT coach Haydn Edwards - WHOLESOME ! Grooming isnt just about getting a clean sweet smelling fluff butt back. Youve paid good money to get to that point, but have you also thought about your dogs not so clean bed, muddy leashes, harnesses, collars and stinky blankets ?! If youre not so keen to use your human washing machine like us ha ha, then head on down to the nearest pet laundromat (when youre allowed to). I recommend drying it all out in the sun on a good day. Dog knows what a commercial dryer will do to all the expensive dog gear! SEE MORE BELOW in the comments.

They've gone 4 months without their regular grooms!! What with lockdowns and travel restrictions, their parents have done a great job brushing and washing these two fur balls!

08.01.2022 Thanks everyone for your patience as I waded through rescheduling all your appointments. Were not done yet and hopefully lockdown wont be extended past the 6 weeks .. just sayin! Be prepared ok As promised, heres a quick video on how to do a quick clean up. Weve just come back from the beach. I went for a dip in between hail storms (as you do). Momos wet, hes got sand in there somewhere. Im not talking clearly because Im a bit frozen Put your dog on a clean towel, grab another clean towel and dry your dog as much as you can. After your dog has dried off over the course of the day brush it out as much as you can. This will help dislodge the dirt and sand in the coat. This works for other breeds too. Catcha next time and post any other tips and tricks you know to share

05.01.2022 We all get taken for walks by our dogs but you certainly dont want that happening going down steep stairs! Over the years Ive trained Momo to go slowly as we walk down, and when I say wait! he knows to stop wherever he is right there and then! He also goes stupid going up a particular staircase that is occupied with wild cats. Not his fault, some breeds have a high prey drive. So I distract him with the get it game by throwing yummy treats left and right so he...s distracted. Dogs cant do more than one thing at a time. If theyre sniffing they wont hear you that well, if theyve focussed on a cat they wont hear you at all What tricks have your dogs got up their paw ? 05.01.2022 How did you guys go with brushing bums and tails Today were talking paws ! You want to be able to check and clean their paws before they go in the house, check for grass seeds and burrs as Spring is coming! Accidents happen and they might cut their paws on the beach or rip a nail etc. Its also easier for your dog to let the vet and groomer cut their nails for example and do examinations. In the video I also give a tip on how to start desensitising. Im not a dog trainer and youll see the smart a*** is actually "listening" to the food and not me. See, I need to work on my training ! 05.01.2022 Are you feeling GROUNDED in yourself through this time? I hope you are all going with the flow . I am more than annoyed and concerned over some breeds who need regular grooming and hopefully bigger dog bodies like Dogs Vic will help voice all our concerns (see article in comments). IN the eventuality I dont see you till end of October , continue brushing your kids everyday . I love brushing because its therapeutic ! Especially with it being Spring time, you might start finding grass seeds in their coat and also check their paws (in between toes and paw pad). 05.01.2022 Have you ever wanted to know how to massage your best friend? I give the smart arse a massage after his bike runs now. Hes 8.5 yrs old and we need to start taking more care of our oldies . I ruff up his legs, massage all 4 paws, his chest and shoulder area. Its great for stimulation and is very relaxing for both of us I posted a clip on warming up your dogs before they launch into a run or the dog park, so this is a cool down like we humans do before & after exercise.... 04.01.2022 I’M SO PROUD OF PEPPER ! She’s come a long way from being terrified of grooming, shrieking (as shepherds tend to do!) with water on her and panting non stop during drying. FAST FORWARD 2 years, and TODAY she voluntarily hops up on the grooming table and into the bath on her 4 legs. Some dogs are happy in a busy salon watching the hustle and bustle, and others love a RELAXED QUIET environment at a home salon . ... Pepper’s mum travels an hour to us so it’s not always what’s convenient for the human, but what’s best for your dog Practise makes perfect .. this goes for brushing at home when they protest No force. Just be firm gentle and encouraging

03.01.2022 HELLO PEEPS We washed the kids yesterday as you know so I took the opportunity to do these vids on how to go about tidying up those grinchy paws - mainly for doublecoated dogs, not oodles but similar principle. Try and remove as much dirt from their paws as you can as itll damage scissors, blades and clippers, which is why we do this on a clean dog during a professional groom. Two of ours are still recovering from ligament injuries and oldie issues, but Momo went down to the beach and I covered more training with him. He LOVES a mental challenge! Grooming is going to take extra long when we get back to it, and if there are matts etc I will be shaving them off! 01.01.2022 Its happening !! Weve spent 3 hours tracking the elusive and endangered hufky even though he has been tagged with a radar collar. Were covered in sweat and scratches crawling through thorny bush and on the ground to stay downwind. Hufkies have very sensitive noses and can smell prey a mile away . They also can jump and climb like a monkey so you dont want the hufky scared or on high alert! After hes been darted, brave Piete will carry the elusive and endangered ...hufky to the high security groom room where he will be thoroughly scrubbed and washed with exfoliating gloves Tune in later tonight where youll see how to clean up the hufky paws so they can then run faster to catch their prey!!
