25.01.2022 Today is R U OK Day- a day that comes with an important reminder, particularly this year, of the importance in taking the time to slow down and check in with the people around us. And while R U OK is the perfect conversation starter, it is as important to keep that conversation going. So today I have a challenge for you and if you are willing to take it on, I may even have a prize or two in the Happy Lawyer Happy Life gift cupboard to send your way! Today my challenge to yo...u is to ask two questions, not just one. Are you okay is such a powerful question, but it is what you ask next that will make the biggest difference. So why not ask a question like What are you looking forward to? or What have you done this week that youre proud of? or What is something that, thats happened thats made you smile? These are the sorts of questions that, as human beings, they matter. And its having that sort of dialogue that will really help in terms of building a more positive profession, building connection between all of us, trying to be kinder to each other. 2020 has really taught us all some very significant lessons about all sorts of things and I suspect will continue to do so for some time. So Id love you to take the chance today to not only ask the question, Are you okay? but ask a few more questions, be curious, be interested and be kind to each other because theres enough going on in the world right now to make it pretty tough for everyone. And if you take the challenge, why not message/ email/ comment below with the result and I will go and hunt through the prize cupboard too!
25.01.2022 So earlier this year I sat and wrote my usual list of goals for 2020. I pulled that list out over the weekend and smiled as despite the unexpected turn of events this past month, it turns out the silver lining in this pandemic is that some of those goals are now happening far earlier than I had predicted! The first of those is moving my teaching all online! I love workshops and enjoy meeting you all but the travel whilst running a practice was taking a toll last year and so... heh presto, thanks to a thing called a pandemic, I have moved all of my programs to the online space. This past 4 weeks I have tested the format with a bunch of lawyers from all around Australia, the Netherlands and Canada for my fixed pricing workshop and I have come to conclude that running this training over a few weeks is actually much more helpful than a 1 day intensive as we can trial and error the implementation at the same time. And so, from the comfort of your new home offices anywhere in the world, you can now join my upcoming courses in- Social Media (aka online marketing) for Lawyers Fixed and Value Pricing (aka tossing those timesheets) Introduction to Collaborative Practice Turn your IP into Products (aka find new ways to package up your time into scaleable products!) All the details are on my website below and as always, if you have any questions, throw them at me! https://www.happylawyerhappylife.com/workshops/
25.01.2022 In this weeks episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast I had the pleasure of interviewing legal academic, Peter Black. Peter does not describe himself as being a lawyer but having spent an hour learning a little about his amazing career in the legal profession, he certainly falls into the lawyer box for me! These days Peter is an Academic at QUT (Queensland University of Technology)here in Brisbane where is currently the Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching in... Law at QUT. He has spent much of his career in academia along with some fascinating roles overseas along the way. He has also used his education and skill to advocate for many causes close to his heart, having been recognised with a number of industry awards for his work particularly in advocacy for the LGBTI community. This interview has it all- from building a career that is true to you and finding your path in law but perhaps most importantly, it was Peters candid discussion of his own challenges with mental ill-health and the steps he has taken and the support he has received that we can all take so much from. My own research from current and past students of Peters tells me he is one great teacher too and it is wonderful to know that someone with such compassion, knowledge and skill is inspiring our lawyers of the future each day.

23.01.2022 This week I am running a FREE WEBINAR 'just because' and I hope you might join me! Join us at 8am Friday, bring your best virtual coffee, pen and notebook, as we share 10 tips on how you can futureproof your law career in this sort of / hopefully post COVID world. This webinar is aimed at soon to be lawyers and early career lawyers but anyone in law land is very welcome! You can register here-https://www.happylawyerhappylife.com/calmingthechaos

21.01.2022 You asked I am delivering! I receive messages daily from lawyers at all ages and stages asking for tips on business, wellness and even fashion... (I dont mind those fashion questions but apologies for my slackness in responding as I am not sure that is really my strength!) I know 2020 has thrown so many of your businesses into a big of chaos and so my way of helping has been to pull together a bunch of my trusted friends- in and out of lawland- to help answer some of ...what you are all asking and heh presto the HLHL FREE Masterclass series is here! 19.01.2022 In this weeks episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast I had the pleasure of interviewing Barrister Nathan Laing. This interview was a joy for so many reasons- firstly because this was my first in person podcast interview since all things COVID took over our world and secondly because Nathan is such a gem of a guest! Nathans life in law is not new but his career has taken him on a fascinating path- from the police, to life as a criminal lawyer, to the Navy, to the... Army and now circling back to all things law again! Nathans career made for some great annecdotes and he really has such an interesting series of adventures but it was his perspective on life, both in and out of the law that I just loved in this chat. Nathan and I tackle some of the challenges we are living through right now including the very public conversation about sexual harassment, bullying and other systematic challenges in our profession. Nathans thoughts on what this all means for the future of our profession left me feeling a great sense of faith that all this upheavel is well overdue and much needed and with leaders like Nathan coming through, the legal profession is in good hands. Thank you once again to The College of Law whose ongoing support makes this show possible every single week.
18.01.2022 Last year I met this superpower lawyer, Emma Fitzgerald and this past few months I have had the privilege of working alongside her here at Happy Lawyer Happy Life Headquarters so it seemed fitting to have Emma on the show this week! Emma is a solicitor, with a background primarily in the insurance space but a great idea and a chance conversation has led to Emma coming to work with me for the past few months while she is madly studying in her after hours for the Bar Exam. Emma... didnt set out to be a lawyer- she had politics on her horizon but a few years into her university studies a law degree seemed a good idea and fast forward a decade or so, Emma has built an impressive career in the insurance space. But it has not all been an easy run and Emma shared her ups and downs both personally and professionally and importantly what she has done (and continues to do) to live a life in law that works for her. You can find Emmas podcast and side hustle over at Lawyering Space Pty Ltd which is well worth a listen!
18.01.2022 This weeks podcast is live and it is the perfect episode to listen to while sipping a chai tea! I had the pleasure of interviewing Virginia Warren. Now Virginia is no average lawyer! She is a lawyer/ yoga instructor/ TEDX speaker and so much more and it was a real delight to hear her perspective in this interview. I met Virginia in a course a few years ago now and have followed her advetures since. She is an Author of a great book- Lets Kiss All The Lawyers! said n...o-one, ever and like me, has been on a campaign to improve the mental health of lawyers world wide. Virgina has a deep connection to place, space and consciousness and her thoughts on life, law and wellness really got me thinking. She does not live life on the surface and challenges us to consider how early experiences in our lives and careers impact how we show up every day. Virginia has a great antidote to all of this though and gave some really great practicial tips on how we can reframe and reshape our lives for the better. There is a whole lot in the interview and it is one to listen to while sipping a hot tea as you will be transformed off into deep thought and inspired to try a few new things too
16.01.2022 The wonderful Imakestagram worked her magic on these IKEA chairs and next thing you know.... rainbow sparkles! Over the weekend we heard from @aestheticsofjoy about how simple things like the colour and space around us can be built to purposefully create joy- even in the most challenging of moments. And so yes, there is method in my madness- this gorgeous chair now sits in our office reception and just today I saw the smile it brought to a new client’s face as she arrived... so worried about the conversations she was about to have, and yet this simple sparkly piece immediately created the chance for a different conversation and changed the expectation of what seeing a lawyer might entail. Now I appreciate that sparkly chairs may not work in all law offices but there are simple things we can all do to improve the experiences for our clients- to take away some of the positioning and power that has built up over the years thanks to stark professional spaces. So I challenge you- what can you do to create a bit more joy and comfort in your workspace for you, your team and your clients?
16.01.2022 Calling my entrepreneurial lawyer friends! Next week I am launching the next in my online course series with a 4 week course designed to help you build products in your law firm. Most of us spend our days in law selling our IP in 6 minute increments. But what if you could take all that IP and bundle it up into products that your clients need, would use and would even willingly pay for on a Sunday when you are otherwise out enjoying your weekend? ... In this course I will help you brainstorm and build a framework for you to start to turn all that IP that lies around your firm (and mostly sits in your mind!) into resources and products that will change the way you engage with your marketplace. If you have thought about writing a book, a course, producing webinars or other e-products this program is for you! All the details are on the link below and you can access early bird pricing until Monday too.
16.01.2022 In this weeks episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast I had the pleasure of interviewing Alexandra Atanasov and this really was a treat! As I sat down to hear about life as a commercial litigator little did I know that I would soon be talking about crochet! It turns out that Alexandra is one half of an amazing creative duo here in Brisbane, best known as imakestababy in Instagram land! So how do you combine the rigours of commercial litigation with the creativity ...of a babywear label? Well Alexandra tells us all how and more importantly why! I loved the chance to hear Alexandras perspective on life in and out of law- she said wisely that her happiness, her ability to manage the stressors of her job, comes from ensuring she has many sources of joy in her life and purposefully creating the space for them all. Yes she is busy, yes she gets overwhelmed but she has come to learn that there are a few key things she needs to keep herself going and so she made sure those things are every present in her days and weeks. Now I am off to learn crochet too Alexandra!
15.01.2022 In this weeks episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast I was with solicitor Dean Spanner. Dean has been practising in law for almost 30 years now and gee he brought some experience to this interview. I thought wed be talking a lot about law and a little about cricket but it turned out we ended up speaking an awful lot about life and how to ensure that you can have a successful career in the law that also prioritises the things that matter- in Deans case his relatio...nships with his family, children, friends and colleagues. Dean practises primarily these days as a personal injury lawyer but over the course of his career hes had experience in a very wide variety of practice areas. He himself says that it is the people part of law that brought him to it and has kept him in it, and is now inspiring the next generation of Spanners in his practice also. Dean was an advocate and real life example of work life balance before that was even a thing! At 28 years of age (I am guessing a good 20 years ago) Dean implemented a work from home arrangement so he could be with his kids shortly after first becoming a Dad- and he has maintained this routine to today. It was Deans mindset, perspective and spirituality that I found intriguing in this conversation and that I think we can all learn a lot from. Hes a great example that with hard work but clarity around what brings joy to your life, you can live a successful life in and outside of the law.
15.01.2022 In this weeks episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast I had the pleasure of interviewing surrogacy and family lawyer Cassandra Kalpaxis. I have come to know Cassandra this past few years and over that time I have watched her work hard to build a practice that focuses on the work she loves to do and balances her love of family. This is no easy feat- anyone practicing in law would feel the tension every day! Cassandra grew up in law land, starting her first role in... a firm at only 14 years of age. She primarily practiced in criminal law- an area of law she really enjoyed however last year she made the decision to move away from this practice area to create the space to focus on work that she really loves in the surrogacy space. Cassandra has since built a business Simply Surrogacy that is helping families of all shapes and sizes around the country achieve their dreams to be parents. Cassandra and I chatted late at night for this interview so I sense you will have a laugh at our tiredness- but I have concluded that is an authentic representation of our lives in law! Cassandra had lots of advice on starting out, building a practice and all of those important law land things but it is her perspective on family, relationships and friendships that I think is the piece that I will take away from this chat.
15.01.2022 In this weeks episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast I had the pleasure of interviewing lawyer, advocate and relationship manager Sheetal Deo. For someone still only a few years into #lawland Sheetal has a whole lot going on- including a full time role as a Relationship Manager at Queensland Law Society, running her own firm, Shakti Legal Solutions and building a not for profit to advocate for diversity and inclusion in law. I came to understand in this interview... that doing all the things is core to Sheetals purpose and happiness in life and law. This conversation took us from Sheetals early life in Canada, her move to Australia to study and navigating her Indian heritage while coming to terms with her own place in life as a gay woman. This chat has it all! My favourite part though was Sheetals comment about her own experience in law so far- that it is nolonger about finding your fit in the profession but instead about creating your fit- something I can certainly resonate with!
12.01.2022 In this Covid chaos there has been plenty of not so great news but being the eternal optimist I am, I have enjoyed hunting out the good news for lawyers and law firms instead. And as a result I am brining you a new spotlight series called Happy lawyer Pivot! Over the next few months, I will be sharing with you some good news stories of how lawyers are using this time of covid chaos to create, support and inspire each other. Our first happy lawyers are Cara Austen and J...o Alilovic who have joined forces to create a focus group for employers to share business strategies and access information on the changing work landscape. Now this is not like any other collaboration, Cara and Jo are in two completely different parts of the country and specialise in very different practice areas. Prior to Covid chaos they were friends but post Covid Chaos they are cross country lawland collaborators! Cara is the owner and founder of Twine Business and Law based in Northern NSW and Jo is an employment law expert who runs and owns a busy niche practice 3DHR Legal in sunny Perth! So why does this matter? Well right now in lawland we are seeing all sorts of ups and downs and change. But in these moments there are also opportunities if you are willing to have a go, try something new and just see where it takes you. So whats the outcome- well I havent asked Cara and Jo but as someone who has benefited from their advice and knowledge this past few months, I suspect the simple answer to that question is a group of raving fans (or in marketing speak leadsl) that are ready to (if not already) working with Jo and Cara on aspects of their businesses as we all navigate this strange time. So whats the learning? Sometimes trying something different, without overthinking it is the very thing that kicks of business success. My challenge to you is to think about who you might be able to work with over the coming months on something new and perhaps that person is in your firm but there is every chance they are not too! You can join Cara and Jos group here- Coronavirus Employer Support - Australia And if you know someone in lawland who is up to something great, then why not let me know for our next Happy Lawyer Pivot profile.

11.01.2022 This week I got to go ‘international’ and chat with a wonderful lawyer in Rho Thomas. Rho is all the way over in the USA where she practices primarily in trademark law. We did talk law and particularly Rho’s life in 2020- managing her role in a large law firm in the city of Atlanta, Georgia. Rho and I recorded this interview a few weeks ago and it sure is an interesting time to be talking about life in the USA versus life in Australia. Given the current challenges as a... result of the pandemic, Rho has been working from home, juggling her job around caring for her two young children since April this year which as I am sure we can all imagine, is no easy thing. There is a whole lot in this chat and Rho is a wonderful guest- full of stories that will make you laugh and honesty that will also get you thinking.
11.01.2022 After a few too many hours online I have come to learn a fair bit about how we lawyers can and should use social media. Over the past few years I have grown a niche social media community of over 20,000 people across multiple platforms and credit social media as being one of the biggest drivers of new work to my law practice. So how have I done it? Well that is what I will show you in this free webinar I am running later this week. Given our current strange new normal i...t is more important than ever to be doing business online and social media should be one big part of any lawfirm online strategy. Come and join me at 8am this Thursday as I unpack a few tips that have helped me navigate the platforms and build an online strategy that enables me to do business with clients all over the country every day. You can register on the link here- https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_EmBKTJNFTTW5ZATs12SQjQ
11.01.2022 Back by popular demand! We made many mistakes, learned the hard way... but even still, I would not go back! The link to join me is below and all are welcome (including your morning coffee, small humans and other work from home distractions and delights!) https://www.thehappyfamilylawyer.com/fixthosefees
10.01.2022 This week's podcast is live and it is the perfect episode to listen to while sipping a chai tea! I had the pleasure of interviewing Virginia Warren. Now Virginia is no average lawyer! 09.01.2022 This week marks the 4 year anniversary of the launch of all things Happy Lawyer Happy Life. 4 years, 192 episodes, 350,000 downloads and a whole lot of amazing lawyers! 09.01.2022 Join me for the next in my online Masterclass series as I talk all things Collaborative Practice next Tuesday with my collaborative colleague Shelby Timmins of Divorce Done Differently! Collaborative Practice is widely used in family law to help separating couples find solutions to legal issues without using the Courts. This process is unique as it pulls together professional teams of advisors from law, social sciences, accounting and finance and encourages couples to build s...olutions that recognise their values in life as well as the legal principles at play. I could talk for hours about the benefits of this process but I promise we will limit it to one hour next week. If you have wanted to know a little more about how this might work for you or your clients, then please come along. The webinar will be live at 8am (AEST) on Tuesday and if you cant attend live, please register and a recording will come to you shortly after.
09.01.2022 Last chance to join my 4 week course on all things Fixed and Value Pricing that launches tomorrow! In this program I will show you how we tossed the time sheets and moved our services to a fixed pricing model. What this means for our clients is certainty which I hear all the time is the thing they appreciate the most. ... What this means for my firm is no debtors, cash flow predictability and efficient work processes focused on client service not time billed steps. Because outcome and cost are agreed up front, payments are staged and scopes are detailed, any challenges with payment are dealt with before the work is done, meaning that we can also have transparent conversations with our clients about their budget, expectations and options. So in short, if you are interested in learning about how you can pivot your practice to offer your clients the option of fixed fees then I would love to have your join me. All the details are below but as always, feel free to throw any questions my way.

08.01.2022 This week I am running a FREE WEBINAR just because and I hope you might join me! 07.01.2022 For the past few years I have had the pleasure of hanging out with a great bunch of lawyers from all around the country in 'The Club'. What is 'The Club' you ask? It is an online mastermind for lawyers looking to make the best out of their law businesses and the best out of their lives. The Club brings together a Faculty of experts from law, business, marketing, digital, health and wellness to ensure you can tap into all the expertise you could need to create and grow a mod...ern law practice. I like to think of it as actionable CPD on tap in the safety of a hugely positive and supportive community! Over the past 3 and a half years I have seen members of the Club build businesses, publish books, launch exciting new products, rework existing businesses, collaborate, have babies, launch more businesses, grow podcasts and that is just the start of it! The events of 2020 have shown me that there has never been a more important time to be apart of a community of professionals finding different ways to do law and yes- you can be a part of the Club too! For less than the cost of that daily coffee you too can access knowledge, support and skills that will help you grow a business in law that also ensures you have a life that works for you. 05.01.2022 So each November for the past 3 years I have had a blast putting together an event like no other for lawyers around Australia. This past few weeks I have had to get to brainstorming how we can still run a Retreat thanks to the madness that is Covid/2020 and I was ready to toss it all in. And then a few smart ideas from the wonderful Emma Fitzgerald and suddenly a virtual retreat with a difference became a thing! So in good news there will be a Happy Lawyer Happy Life Retrea...t this year and it will be so much more than a zoomfest because #tinsel! All the details on how you can get your ticket and join us from the comfort of your home/ office or one of our Club Hubs around the country will be released soon!
05.01.2022 Tomorrow I am launching my new Collaborative Practice Bootcamp and there is still time for you to give it a go! I bet you are thinking "Whats a Collaborative Practice Bootcamp Clarissa?" Well it isnt exercise camp (so doughnuts are still a thing!) but it is a dedicated 4 week online coaching program to help you take all of those collaborative skills and get this work rolling in the door! Over the past five years, Ive had the pleasure of training over 500 collaborativ...e professionals around Australia. Many of us bounce out of the two day introductory training course with so much enthusiasm for this new process, only to discover a few weeks later that finding collaborative clients with whom we can test our new skills can be a real challenge. And so this is where Bootcamp comes in! Over the 4 weeks together I will help you launch, re-launch or re-jig your collaborative practice and get those skills working the way you need. So who is up for some virtual Collaborative Practice bootcamping? All the details are on the link below and if you use the code early bird you can access a $100 discount! https://www.happylawyerhappylife.com/collaborative-practic/
03.01.2022 I fell upon Bridget Cullen last year when she was awarded the Leneen Forde AC WLAQ Woman Lawyer of the Year Award and delivered a speech that was quite something! I heard that speech and knew I needed to get Bridget on this show and a year later here we are! Bridget has had a really interesting career in law- from private practice to the Bar, to Academia and now as a Member of the AAT. Life has not been smooth sailing for Bridget and it is her outlook and her suggestions around perspective and relationships that I really enjoyed in this interview. I knew last year when I first heard Bridget speak that she was one great woman and this interview just confirmed it for me!
02.01.2022 Last week I got to reverse my usual role and answer the questions rather than ask them with my good friend Jerome Doraisamy on this brand new Podcast from Lawyers Weekly. And yes we did talk happiness in law particulary in 2020 but also branding, building community and basketball! Yes it turns out I am now an expert in basketball thanks to Netflix! Ok, so I know nothing about Basketball but I know something about wellness in law and running a Boutique Law Firm and you can l...isten in below. And I do want to thank Jerome and the team at Lawyers Weekly for their focus on building content specific to the different needs of all of us in law- this podcast specific to the Boutique Space will be a great resource for the future. Looking forward to the next installment next week!
02.01.2022 I have been taking a break from podcasting and then this little episode appeared as a Facebook memory today! Oh the timing! I have been a very quiet Happy Lawyer this past month and some of you know why. Earlier this month I lost my dearest friend, Melissa Nielsen to brain cancer very quickly and very unexpectedly. Losing anyone is heartbreaking and losing someone so vibrant and young is impossible to understand at times. Melissa and I met thanks to our first year as prop...er lawyers and have had a friendship that has been so very special to me ever since. She lived in Cairns, I lived in Brisbane but we would speak every few days and to not be able to do that anymore has left an emptiness in my heart I dont suspect will ever go away. I have heard from many legal colleagues this past month and greatly appreciate your kind thoughts. I knew my friend was pretty incredible but even I was not aware of the depth of her work in her local community and the impact she has had on so many in her life. And that I think sums up Melissa perfectly. For her it was never about accolades and always about joy. Her love of others is like no one else I have ever known and her ability to make us all feel so valued really demonstrates her spirit and purpose. Many of you have asked if I am ok- well the answer is no, not really. I am not sure you can be ok in moments like these and I suspect it is the time when we should all be allowed to be not ok! Grief is a normal and natural thing and something we all just have to live through. But how I feel is making a few things pretty hard- one of which is podcasting about happiness when that is far from my mind. 3 years ago today Melissa and I were chatting and laughing our way through this podcast episode. I could never have expected just how important this conversation was to become and the comfort that comes from now listening to her joy and laughter as she shared the things that mattered to her in her life in the law. And so, in part in celebration, and in part in saddness I am sharing this episode with you today in memory of one amazing woman who happened to also be an amazing lawyer. And that happiness stuff- well I think it is as important to acknowledge that while happiness is a wonderful pursuit, unhappiness is equally necessary in some moments in life, but like anything I guess it is what we do with those feelings that really matters. The podcast will be back soon, but in the meantime I recommend adopting a few Melissaisms as our profession (and the world!) could really do with it right now- just be kind, always.
02.01.2022 In this weeks episode of the Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast I had the pleasure of interviewing Justin North. Justin is not a lawyer but he may as well be one- he is the son of, brother of and married to a lawyer and has spent his entire career working within the law. I have come to know Justin through his work with his legal consulting firm, Janders Dean. Now it has taken me a solid 3 years of pestering to get Justin on this show and it seems it took a pandemic to get ...me over the line! But whatever the reason, I am grateful- this was a wonderful chat with someone who really gets life in the law. I have had the privilege, like so many others, of Justins generosity and support in my own career so in some ways this was the opportunuty for me to say a Thank you to someone who prefers to shine the light on others than to accept praise himself. He is a true trailblazer in our industry and it was great to hear his optimistic outlook on the future of law, pandemic or not! We talked changes in law from the 90s to now, the future of law, wellness in our industry, the billable hour and of course the joys and challenges of the partnership model. Neither of us have all the answers, but I did take away from Justins perspective that so much has changed for the better- diversity, wellness and a genuine focus on service- that we can be excited for the future as the building blocks are in place we just all need to keep building on them.
