16.01.2022 To the writers of the Loreal Revitalift commercial in which the lady says she thinks she looks as good as she did 15 years ago and this is very empowering. How does it empower women (or men for that matter) to be striving to look as they did at any time in the past? Nature has us ageing from the time we are born. Im sure anyone who does in fact look the same as they did 15 years ago is probably very happy about that unless of course, they are under 30 happy but emp...owered?? Surely empowerment comes from releasing the need to look a certain way? Isnt empowerment partially about feeling great in your skin regardless of external appearance or others' opinions? Sadly, society today is so focused on looks that some people experience depression if they feel they dont measure up. Comparing themselves to others no matter how realistic or otherwise the comparison is more an obsession than a pastime. This obsession with looks (fostered by social media) can only be dis-empowering, if not soul-destroying. Advertisers, our young people have more than enough to grapple with when it comes to their physical appearance trumping their inner selves. Can we please NOT suggest to them (or anyone) that looking younger than their years is empowering when, in fact it is a most DIS-EMPOWERING aspiration? I understand advertisers want to use the latest catch-phrases and power words and their clients want to perpetuate sales, but surely there is a level of social responsibility required here? At what point do we discourage slavery to the mirror or camera? Can any women out there reassure me (please) that the wording in this advertisement has not fooled them into thinking they will feel empowered if they look young? Feel happy, satisfied, youthful, but please tell me your empowerment comes from who you are not from striving for an unrealistic physical appearance. See more
