The next time you feel a menopausal meltdown coming on visualise yourself as a grand Orca basking in cool Southern Antarctic waters. Of course, if that doesn't cool you down, give in and devour your prey! (Giggle)... Orca pods revere the older female leaders in the pod. It is scientifically proven that the males acquire their hunting skills under the tutelage of the older female orcas. The older post-reproductive females are revered. They lead the pod from the front and use their accumulated knowledge to improve the overall health of the entire pod. Author Christa D’Souza researched the profound impact of post-menopausal female orcas and their relationship with the rest of the pod: We complain, women of my age, of becoming invisible, and it's true - you realise how very much you're defined by sexuality. But I have a sense - galvanised by stories about the killer whales - that now is the time when you become the person you really want to be." Scientific orca expert Darren Croft supports Christa’s observations: Christa D’Souza says: "The idea of women passing on information; the idea of wisdom with age - there's a beauty in that that is about something other than being able to reproduce. Croft says that talking to D'Souza about her orca observations opened his eyes to the wider impact of his work with the orcas. "This very important role that old females have to play in killer whale society has highlighted the value of older individuals," he says. "I'm delighted that the work is having this reach."
