23.01.2022 The Kiwirrkurra Cat Hunters have featured in three fascinating new books launched in the last couple of months. "Eat The Problem" by MONA's Kirsha Kaechele is a... 544 page super-deluxe food and art compendium of recipes featuring invasive species. It includes a beautiful interview with John T West (pictured here) in both Pintubi and English, about the problem of cats in the desert, and how Kiwirrkurra people love to eat them. "Among the Pigeons" is a very readable book by one of Australia's leading cat researchers, Dr John Read, that describes the values, impacts and management of domestic and feral cats in Australia. The exceptional tracking skills of the Kiwirrkurra Cat Hunters are highlighted in the book, including this passage about finding a bilby track during a cat hunt: "I walked behind her, almost in her shadow, as I watched where she placed her feet and where she was looking. Almost as an aside she motioned towards a barely perceptible track of ninu (bilby) and quickly confirmed it was the ‘crippled one’, a bilby she recognised by its asymmetrical tracks. Nolia kept following the crippled ninu, pointing out where it had stopped to dig or feed. In 20 minutes with Nolia I learned more about bilbies than I had from years of naively looking at their tracks." Finally, "Cats in Australia - Companion and Killer" by Sarah Legge, John Woinarski and Chris Dickman collates years of scientific research into the impacts of cats on Australian wildlife and describes the currently available options for reducing these impacts, including employing the skills of the Kiwirrkurra cat hunters.

11.01.2022 Happy sun bear Sunday! Meet Dodo, a female sun bear rescued as a cub in 2005 from Kratie province in eastern Cambodia. Our rescued bears love to explore their ...forest exclosures looking for insects to snack on. When Dodo found a millipede, the ants let her know they didn't want to give it up. Hope your Sunday is full of tasty snacks (without ants). Are you a bear carer? 03.01.2022 This is wonderful news! I'm so thrilled for the poor overworked elephants of Angkor Wat. Now we must all keep a close eye on the set up of the "Conservation and Breeding Centre".

03.01.2022 Love these guys...
