24.01.2022 Why Are Some of Us Born Without Wisdom Teeth? Not everyone has wisdom teeth. In fact, a study shows that up to 35% of people have missing wisdom teeth. There are three main reasons why wisdom teeth may be lacking inside the mouth: c. They are present but still haven’t erupted yet. Wisdom teeth may never erupt if they are impacted (not enough space for them to grow) and may remain dormant in the jaw bone for many years. d. The lack of wisdom teeth related to genes. A study rec...ently carried out in Princeton University shows evolution has a large role to play in the absence of wisdom teeth. The study shows that the expanding brain size over hundreds and thousands of years, meant that the head was no longer large enough to accommodate a larger brain and an extra set of teeth, therefore a gradual shift in jaw engineering doesn’t allow a third molar to form correctly as they are no longer needed because we mainly rely on our first and second molars to do the chewing, so the lack of the third set won’t prevent you from eating without difficulty. 23.01.2022 What Are Dentures? Dentures are a tried and tested way to restore missing teeth. Full dentures replace entire arches of teeth. A partial denture replaces one or more teeth missing in the same arch, but which don’t need to be side by side. A denture consists of an acrylic gum-colored base that rests on the gums and supports denture teeth. Partial dentures are frequently strengthened with the addition of a lightweight cobalt chrome alloy framework, and they often have clasps that fit around existing teeth, helping to hold the denture more securely in place.

19.01.2022 Lets talk the 101 on Mouth guards When it comes to Mouthguards you really only have two options; 1. Boil & Bite Mouthguards... 2. Custom Fitted Mouthguards Boil & Bite mouthguards, often the more cost-effective method when compared to Custom Fitted Mouthguards the Boil & Bite is a great alternative if you are playing social sport or sport that isn’t high impact like Basketball, Netball and Soccer. These mouth guards are found at your local sporting goods store. Although these mouthguards are quick and easy to fit as well as cost effective, they offer potentially less protection (when compared to custom fitted mouth guards) and can be looser fitting. Custom fitted mouthguards, are perfect for high impact sports such as Soccer. Rugby Union, Rugby League, Field Hockey and Boxing. To get a custom fitted mouth guard, you simply need to make an appointment with us, so your dentist can make a custom mould of your teeth and get your mouth guard made. Custom fitted mouth guards are a little more costly and time consuming than the standard boil & bite mouthguard, however it offers more protection against those higher impact sports and wont impact breathing whilst you are playing.

14.01.2022 White fillings If you are looking for an alternative to old fashioned, dark amalgam fillings, our composite ( tooth coloured ) fillings can give you the beautiful new white smile you’ve dreamed of. While amalgam fillings are effective, their dark colour makes them stand out unfavourably against your naturally white teeth. Composite restorations are a natural looking alterative, and are also durable without weakening your natural tooth structure. (As amalgam filling can cause ...your teeth to fracture over the years) Another major benefit of composite fillings is that less of your natural tooth surface needs to be removed to prepare your tooth, resulting in smaller fillings. And best of all, tooth-coloured restorations can often be completed in just a single appointment. Happy Rock Dental is located at Suite 104, 28-30 Kingsway, Cronulla NSW 2230. For appointments, please call us on (02) 9523 0403. https://www.happyrockdental.com.au//genera/white-fillings/

13.01.2022 Why Does Dental Health Influence Surgical Treatments? If you need surgery or treatment, it may be wise to see your dentist. They can assess your dental health, ensuring you do not have existing dental diseases that need treatment and most importantly can help you to plan, ensuring you maintain optimal oral health as this can help to protect your overall quality-of-life. Ensuring that you have a healthy mouth reduces the risk of bacterial buildup in your mouth as these oral bacteria could cause infections and may make it harder to heal and recover successfully. Critically, when your mouth is healthier, it is easier to remain positive and to eat properly, aiding recovery after surgery or treatment. https://www.happyrockdental.com.au/dental-health-influence/

12.01.2022 Tongue-tie treatments in Pediatric Dentistry Tongue-tie is referred to as an embryological remnant of the tissue in the midline between the undersurface of the tongue and floor of the mouth. This tissue is known to inhibit the normal flexible movements of the tongue. The attachments of this tissue can be normal or multiple variants of the normal. Many times, tongue-tie presents with subtle signs which explains why more than frequently the condition is missed on evaluation and... subsequent diagnosis by various professionals. The most common pointer that brings parents or the providers to check for the tongue-tie is speech alteration. Children with tongue-tie are unable to pronounce some of the speech sounds such as, CH, S, M, K, G, N, G, T, D, N, L , R, Z. They might stutter and may also be observed to avoid certain talking situations and words. Apart from speech alteration, there are many other signs and symptoms that start to surface from birth. These signs are divided into: baby’s signs and mother’s signs and experiences. See more

07.01.2022 What Does It Mean to Have Deep Gum Pockets? A gum pocket is the space or gap between our tooth and its surrounding gum. Your hygienist or dentist will use a tiny little ruler we call a probe to measure the space between your gum and tooth, the pocket. Healthy gums will fit snuggly around the tooth and the measurement will be between 1-3mm. When there is plaque or tartar around or below the gum, it starts to pull away creating a deeper pocket due to inflammation and swelling from the bacteria. This is when the gum starts to have 'pockets' deeper than 3mm indicating some form of gum disease. These deep pockets now allow for bacteria to travel down further below the gum and can start to affect and damage the bone around the teeth. The deeper the pocket is, usually the more severe the inflammation or disease is.

06.01.2022 Hygiene and fertility A healthy smile is always more attractive, but it can also protect fertility in men and women. Studies have shown that poor dental hygiene can negatively affect fertility due to the increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Both are bacterial infections that can soon develop if you fail to brush and floss frequently and if you do not have regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments.

04.01.2022 Summer! Make the Most of the Summer Sun with a Brighter, Whiter Smile Summer is a time for making memories, many of which are immortalised in photos. 03.01.2022 Looking After Your Dental Health During Pregnancy Excellent dental health is even more critical during pregnancy. Looking after your teeth and gums will help protect your unborn baby. Many women can develop gum disease during pregnancy because of hormonal changes, and any existing gum disease may worsen. Severe gum disease or periodontal disease is a particular worry during pregnancy because it could increase the risk of a low birth weight baby or premature birth. Morning si...ckness is another problem that can affect dental health, exposing teeth to strong stomach acid and increasing the risk of tooth erosion. Although it’s tempting to brush your teeth immediately afterwards, it’s better to rinse your mouth with plain water or add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water to help reduce acidity. Aim to wait at least half an hour before brushing your teeth to avoid damaging softened tooth enamel. https://www.happyrockdental.com.au/looking-dental-health-p/

03.01.2022 Dental Injury and Sport, How to Gain the Most Out of Your Mouthguard Did you know that most dental injuries occur while people are enjoying sporting and recreational activities? Those aged under 25 are more at risk. Unfortunately, a dental injury can be painful and expensive to treat and can harm the appearance of your smile. It can result in knocked out or chipped teeth, a broken jaw, and cut lips, gums and cheeks. You may need to take time off school or work to recover, and the lifelong costs of restorative dental treatment can add up quickly. We much prefer to help our patients prevent these kinds of injuries by supplying a well-fitting custom mouthguard. https://www.happyrockdental.com.au/dental-injury-sport-gai/

01.01.2022 What is Oral Health? Oral health is an integral aspect of general health. Oral health is ‘a standard of health of the oral and related tissues that enables an individual to eat, speak and socialise without active disease, discomfort or embarrassment and that contributes to general wellbeing’. That is, oral health is more than simply the absence of disease in the oral cavity; it is a standard of oral functioning that enables comfortable participation in everyday activities.
