22.01.2022 REPOSTING as still relevant As we head into warmer weather and a few snakes sighted already here's a good video on what to do if you encounter a snake *Also if you see a snake (and are safely away from it), call Reptile Rescue Incorporated - 0499 116 690... Best bets for keeping your dogs safe; -remove excess vegetation from your yard -remove any sources of food (e.g. mice, rats) -if possible elevate wood stacks and remove areas where they could nest -have snake proof fencing if possible -remove sources of water (e.g. dog water inside the house if possible) or provide a source away from where your dogs are located *****IMPORTANT - teach a good recall and emergency backup for the times when a quick retreat is required Most times a snake just wants you to go away and a bit is a last resort, so backup quickly and quietly and leave them be (a bit like backing off when dogs are growling...if the snake realises your not a threat they will move away) *We will have further info re snake avoidance training very soon...so watch this space!!

11.01.2022 Perfect idea for a christmas present!
11.01.2022 Want to be able to make friends with new dogs when you meet them? You can signal that you’re friendly by using canine body language! We often hear that you’re s...upposed to offer a dog the back of your hand to sniff, but the body language of this move is actually quite threatening. When we lean forward to offer our hand, we’re facing the dog square on, looming over them, making eye contact and invading their space. All of those signals combine into an intimidating message, and as a result many dogs will become uncomfortable when greeted in this fashion. Confident dogs will usually respond with a couple of signals like turning their head away, yawning, or licking their nose, which means they’d like the human to ease up a bit. Shy or anxious dogs will back away, cower, or even growl, snap or bite. The best way to greet a dog is to either stand side on to them and invite them over by patting your leg or calling to them, or crouch down on the ground and let them come to you. This method ensures that it’s the dog’s choice to come and say hello they’re moving up to you, rather than you moving up to them. If the dog chooses not to approach, it means that they don’t want to say hello. It’s important that you respect that choice, and leave them be. If you’re going to be spending some time with the dog, be patient and hang back the best way to win the trust of a shy dog is to avoid putting pressure on them to interact. Move slowly, blink your eyes a lot to avoid staring, and don’t speak loudly. If they approach to sniff you, don’t pet them right away. Let them sniff, then when they’re finished move away from them and try inviting them closer again. Best of luck making some new doggie friends Dog Geeks! We’d love to hear how being conscious of your body language has helped you greet dogs, or if you’ve ever won the trust of a shy dog by being patient and avoiding pressuring them. - Maddie Ross CPDT-KA ---------------------------------------- For more graphics and videos on training and behaviour, check out our library: https://www.beacondogtraining.com.au/thatdoggeek

04.01.2022 *Parvovirus in Dogs* We have had an influx of dogs in the area with parvovirus. Parvovirus or ‘parvo’ is a highly infectious viral disease that attacks tissues ...with rapidly dividing cells, causing death. The virus is highly contagious, can survive up to a year in the environment and favours hot, humid conditions. Young puppies and unvaccinated dogs are at greater risk of contracting this disease. The best way to protect your puppy is through vaccination. If you have just acquired a new dog (of any age), or if your dog is not up to date with its vaccination, please speak to your local veterinarian to organise a health check and vaccination.
04.01.2022 REWARD STATIONS These are a must for puppies, adolescent dogs and when working through behavior concerns - but I still recommend them for all ages because it ...helps us get into a pattern of finding positive things our dogs are doing throughout the day. Remember: what you reinforce, your dog becomes. Do you use reward stations in your home? If so, what do you keep in them?
