25.01.2022 Deansquad. It was nice out there this morning.
23.01.2022 VALE TOM JONES Our friend and co-competitor, Tom Jones, passed away on Saturday 27th April. He had given the briefing at the Shark Island time trial and was about 5 minutes into the paddle when he had a suspected heart attack on the water. Despite all possible efforts and the assistance of many very competent helpers he died surrounded by his Shark Island mates who were grief-stricken and in shock on the occasion. He leaves his wife Sally, their two sons Charlie and Eddy, his... daughter Alice and stepson Danny. The funeral was held at the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park at Matraville on Tuesday 7th May and it was absolutely packed with relatives, friends and work colleagues wanting to pay their respects to Tom. They included people from Woollahra Council where he worked as a planner, people from Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club where Tom had volunteered for years and was still doing patrols, from Shark Island paddlers of course and many members of his family some of whom had come out from England for the funeral. Tom was a stalwart member of Shark Island Paddlers and had been the chair of the PaddleNSW Open Water Committee. He was firmly and affectionately supported by that committee. It is sad that often we only get to know what wonderful people are in our midst when an event like this occurs. It is no exaggeration to say that Tom was a wonderful person with so many admirable qualities to his personality. Everyone who spoke of him remembered his positive warm dealings with them. There was a lovely balance about Tom. He was even-handed, not upset when things did not go his way. He could listen and then come up with a balanced response. Ever helpful, he was happy to fit in and contribute in whatever way he could. Though clearly a man of ability and skill he was always humble about his contributions. Of course there was a different side to Tom when you were competing with him on the water, but everyone enjoyed that fierce competition and he was most often up on the podium at our events and other open water events like Makai Cup, where I remember him a few short months ago taking silver and looking the picture of health. How we will miss him! He was an architect and town planner by profession and his family, friends and work colleagues knew him to be innovative, forward-thinking with his designs and willing to persevere in developing them to fruition. It was so sad for all to see his design drawings and beautiful watercolour sketches displayed at his funeral reception at the Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club. At the funeral you could see, feel and almost touch the love and respect we had for our friend Tom. Several relatives and friends described him as Cool, stylish and a gentleman. That’s what he was. A cool gentleman. And so much more. Cheers and thank you, Tom. It was a pleasure and a privilege to have known you and paddled with you. Vale Tom Jones. See more
23.01.2022 The Pittwater Challenge was unfortunately unable to proceed due to unacceptably strong wind conditions. A southerly front earlier predicted to hit mid morning arrived at around 7.30am, and though we waited for the possibility it might ease off and made several course changes to concentrate safety resources, the call was made to cancel the race. Fortunately for all entered, Manly Warringah Kayak Club graciously offered to take up the option of the reserve date and reschedule t...he race to August 15. All entries for 14th March have been transferred to the new date. Organisers appreciated the many words of thanks from paddlers for the sensible decision and the offer of postponement.
