Heres a break-down of how and why I make these recommendations. ... 1. BRAND: I prefer to select reliable, reputable brands that have been around a long time. As clich as this is, it is a safe option, and you cant be too safe when it comes to your home. It may be appealing to consider cheaper, new brands that havent been around as long. I cant comment on how long that unit will last, and as with all things in life, nothing is a sure thing, but knowing the company youve purchased through have that longevity and been an industry leader for their products is a safe option. Not only are newer, less known brands harder to service because there is less industry knowledge about them, their parts can often be difficult to source, especially if the company Is no longer in business down the track. 2. MODEL: I always recommend the most efficient, 5 star+ units to my clients. Yes, the initial outlay is more, but long term you will be saving. The less efficient the unit, the more energy it uses, and this will be reflected on your gas and power bills. 3. SIZE: No two homes are the same. Among many, these variations include floor plan, insulation and size, as well as differing (under floor or ceiling) access to the actual unit. Selecting the right sized unit to service your home is important. No one wants to spend more than necessary on a heating unit and you wont gain anything from putting in a unit thats too big for your home. If you think you can cut costs by installing unit thats too small though may result in disappointment. If the unit Is not large enough to heat your home efficiently, it will constantly run to heat the house to the required temperature and therefore consume too much energy and as you know by now, energy = $. As a rule of thumb, I use a simple formula to calculate the right size unit for each home based on watts per m2. So there you have it.
