17.01.2022 RAVENSTHORPE MINE RAMP UP The mobilisation of machinery to the Ravensthorpe nickel mine is nearly complete with mining set to resume next month. Canadian ow...ners First Quantum Minerals announced plans to restart the mine in July last year. It is a case of third time lucky for Ravensthorpe, which closed in 2009 and 2017. Tim Gooch, from mining contractor MACA, said the company began transporting a fleet of more than 20 trucks and excavators in December. "Well need 200 people on site by March, so logistics have certainly played a big part of this, he said. The mobilisation were probably mid-way through. We started moving some gear in before Christmas and weve just started again in earnest. Some of the gear is large, 200-tonne excavators and 150-tonne capacity dump trucks." Mr Gooch said mining will ramp up towards full production by March. He said about 35 per cent of MACAs workforce will be sourced from Ravensthorpe, Hopetoun, Albany, Esperance and Kalgoorlie-Boulder, saying the recruitment drive has been difficult amid an ongoing skills shortage.
