21.01.2022 NARAKA (which translates as ‘hell’ or ‘a place of torment’) is the harrowing true story of U Gambira’s life from childhood to the present. U Gambira is a former... child soldier and Buddhist monk, and the charismatic face behind Burma’s most recent uprising: The Saffron Revolution. Told by his wife, it is also a heartrending tale of struggle in an ‘East meets West’ love story that challenges racial and cultural divides. In 2007, Burma’s military junta cracked down on thousands of peaceful protesters, turning the streets of Yangon and Burma’s ancient monasteries into scenes of carnage. While Junta leaders faced global condemnation, U Gambira was handed a 68-year sentence for his central role in mobilising the Sangha. In prison he was held in solitary confinement, tortured and starved. In January 2012, as part of a prisoner amnesty, U Gambira was released. Denied medical attention, without identity papers and with no monastery willing to take him in, for fear of government reprisals, he was forced to disrobe. By then, he was suffering from severe mental health issues, and these were exacerbated by further arbitrary arrests. In mid 2013, Gambira fled to Thailand with his new Australian wife. Although living in exile, the former monk was never safe from circling dark forces and sinister agendas. In 2016, still not satisfied that U Gambira had been punished enough, the Burmese military manufactured spurious charges and went after him again, this time involving his wife. Naraka takes you inside the fractured mind of a brutalized political prisoner, and into the underbelly of a post-truth nation, where secret police surveillance, fabrication of charges, imprisonment and undermining figure constantly. Naraka is also a story of hope, determination, healing and the strength and resilience of the human spirit. It is a story about the power of love. What I loved most about this story is the fighting spirit of the two main characters. While the book highlights the cruelty of repressive governments it also underscores the inner strength that oppressed individuals carry within.
