25.01.2022 Having no plans or preferences for your birth experience leaves you in a very vulnerable position in a highly interventionist birth environment , knowledge is power when it comes to birth

23.01.2022 A review of 41 research studies has shown that "suspected LGA" (or being told that your baby is bigger than average), is only weakly predictive of the risk of s...houlder dystocia and that routine ultrasound to check the size of a baby in the third trimester could do more harm than good. Researchers looked at these studies becuase there is a growing trend towards recommending induction of labour for a variety of reasons, even though there isn't always good evidence to support this. Induction also carries risks and side effects of its own, and many women who experience induction of labour are not happy with the experience. This is especially the case at the moment, when many are still being told that they cannot have partners with them until they are in established labour. With induction, it can take up to three days for labour to become established, especially in first-time mums. This review looked at whether identifying larger than average babies by ultrasound was an effective way of predicting problems at birth, notably shoulder dystocia. They found that, although universal third-trimester ultrasound screening will result in more women being told that their babies are larger-than-average, it will not have a clinically significant effect at predicting shoulder dystocia. The authors of the review, "recommend caution prior to introducing universal third-trimester screening for macrosomia, as it would increase the rates of intervention, with potential iatrogenic harm, without clear evidence that it would reduce neonatal morbidity. The full review can be seen at https://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article It's important to weigh up ALL the pros and cons of induction of labour before deciding what is right for you and your baby. 23.01.2022 #Repost @birthtrauma.org.au with @make_repost After French women go for their postnatal 6-week check they get referred to a Women’s health physiotherapist... for 10 FREE pelvic floor sessions. How amazing is that! That is how important the French government believes the pelvic floor is, and we couldn't agree more. It actually isn’t the job of your OB or midwife to check your pelvic floor and while we strongly suggest that you book in a longer appointment with your GP for your 6-week check, it is highly unlikely that they will suggest that you see a women’s health physio and we can only get a rebate if we have health cover. BUT, the ABTA, think that pelvic health should be a priority after having a baby. Regardless of the type of birth you’ve had, vaginal or caesarean - a women’s health physio can help reduce or prevent the symptoms of prolapse and help you effectively rehab this important muscle that is responsible for holding your pelvic organs. 19.01.2022 #HomebirthAwarenessWeek2020 Shared from Rhea Dempsey I’m seeing a beautiful trend emerging toward homebirth as a first choice for parents , this is so wonderful and reading below you can understand why , couldn’t resist posting this cosmic yoni ... Because of contemporary cultural messages about how dangerous birth is, I can understand why homebirth is not an option many women consider. Nonetheless research around the world suggests it’s one that should be more widely considered. Recent Australian research comparing home and hospital births tells the story: for low-risk women choosing homebirth we see no increased risk for babies, but stark differences in intervention rates. Of the women who planned homebirth 10% transferred to hospital for necessary interventions, emergency caesarean 2.5%, instrumental birth 2.5%, epidural 3.2%, episiotomy 2.9%. In contrast, for low-risk women choosing hospital the rates were caesarean 12.5%, instrumental birth 17.5%, epidural 27.5%, episiotomy 21.2%. Merely by choosing a hospital, a low-risk woman increases her chances of intervention. Of the homebirth women 95% had spontaneous vaginal births, while only 70% of women birthing in hospital did. This difference between 95% and 70% might already seem stark but it’s important to note, too, that the figure of 70% for spontaneous vaginal births in hospital doesn’t equate to normal physiological birth. It merely means the baby was born vaginally without the use of forceps or vacuum, so this 70% statistic can also include induction, augmentation, artificial rupture of membranes, managed third stage and other procedures. In contrast, the spontaneous vaginal birth statistic of 95% for women choosing homebirth equates predominantly to normal physiological birth. These positive stats are reflective of homebirth research worldwide. Yet in Australia, in contrast to other countries and despite the evidence of its safety and benefits, homebirth is neither routinely promoted nor easily accessible. Hence the need for an ‘awareness week’ and for me to maintain my passion for promoting homebirth. Happy Homebirth Awareness Week 2020!

17.01.2022 Just a reminder as we get closer to Christmas. . Inductions should only be considered when the risk of continuing the pregnancy out weigh the risk of inductio...n. . There are lots of risks of induction, so make sure your care provider tells you them all if they are suggesting an induction simply because your due date potentially clashes with Christmas. . In the last days of your pregnancy your baby, your body, your boobs and your brain get ready for birth, breastfeeding and motherhood and missing out on this is not without risk. . As I describe in my report, Hormonal Physiology of Childbearing, the natural (physiological) onset of labour is a pivotal time. While we don’t fully understand the processes that initiate human labour, we believe that the baby signals readiness for labour, birth and life outside the womb to the mother through placental hormones. These signals promote ‘prelabour physiologic preparations’ for mother and baby, which will make labour and birth as efficient, pleasurable, and safe as possible, for both. Physiologic labour onset, by definition, allows the full maturity of the baby’s body and brain, which is also growing rapidly in the final weeks in the womb. Could disrupting these final weeks of brain development have longer-term effects? Several studies have found better developmental and academic outcomes for every extra week of pregnancy, even up to 41 weeks .
