24.01.2022 What do you get when you bring together 48 harps, harpists aged from 5 to 80, the legendary Alice Giles, and the Harp Society of WA? Harp Heaven, of course W...AAPA hosted the inaugural Perth Harp Festival over the past three days, and it was truly something to behold. Alice Giles was stunning and inspirational; there were concerts, masterclasses, workshops and demonstrations, and the Richard Gill Auditorium overflowed with joy in the grand finale concert today. The festival was organised superbly by the Harp Society of WA - many congratulations to Samarra, Rachel, Helen, Catherine, Bronwyn, the Committee, and everyone involved... with a special shout-out to John and Penny for their yummy catering! 21.01.2022 HCA proudly supports our local harp makers which produce harps made from Australian timber. These beautiful and quality instruments are much cheaper than imported harps as they are not subjected to import taxes and large international freight costs. We have had many inquiries about the natural coloured harp played at the Mothers Day workshop in the video clip of Amazing Grace. This harp was made by Tim Guster. http://www.timguster.com.au/

02.01.2022 So happy to announce that my new book is out now on Carl Fischer Music! The Composers Guide to Writing Well for the Modern Harp has been a project in progres...s for many years and is the result of my experience working with numerous composers on countless new works. I hope the book will help streamline the process of writing for the harp and remove the trepidation that often accompanies the task. It features 22 detailed chapters on a full spectrum of topics, including technical logistics, chromaticism, notation, context, resonance management, special effects, and more. Stay tuned for my new companion videos coming soon, with demos on everything from pedal basics to the dozens of special effects detailed in the book. 01.01.2022 Happy Birthday to Alice Chalifoux born January 22, 1908. She did not like her birthday celebrated but I got away with it by calling it Teacher Appreciation Day.... This photo is entitled Awaiting the Master from the International Harp Archives. It may have been taken in Salzedos time but those of us fortunate to have experienced the Salzedo School in Camden, Maine with Miss Chalifoux sat in that red wicker chair many times waiting for our lesson.
