25.01.2022 Today CFA brigades were called to a number of out-of-control burn-offs If you're using the great weather to clean-up your property for fire season, make sure ...you conduct your burn-off safely. A burn-off, if not extinguished properly can re-ignite days after the original burn. Keep your burn-off safe and legal: Check fire restrictions with your local council and register your burn on 1800 668 511 Check and monitor weather conditions particularly wind To avoid unnecessary calls to emergency services, notify your neighbours beforehand Leave a three metre fire break, free from flammable materials around the burn Have sufficient equipment and water to stop the fire spreading Never leave a burn-off unattended stay for its entire duration If your burn-off gets out of control, call ‘000’ immediately

Schmidty was in his second term as Training Officer which he had taken to another level with his great enthusiasm for the position. He had a passion for the Brigade be it on the tanker, training, rostering, working bees, participating at markets and happy hour raffles.... He was a huge asset to the Brigade and an outstanding member of the community. Our sincere condolences to Sue, Jacqui, Michael, Phil, Geoff, Steve and family at this sad time. RIP Schmidty. 19.01.2022 Each year we see an increase in the number of chimney fires from both fireplaces and wood heaters. Keep your home safe this winter by checking your chimney: Use a torch to check for creosote build-up or obstructions like bird nests. Have your chimney professionally cleaned annually.

18.01.2022 Planning a backyard BBQ this sunny weekend? If your BBQ has been in hibernation over winter, there's a few simple safety checks you'll need to do before firing it up... (or you might end up with more than a few burnt snags).

16.01.2022 This evening Harrietville assisted Bright Fire Brigade with a burn at Freeburgh. Given the recent rain firefighters from both brigades managed to do a good job and raise plenty of smoke. More importantly it gave a chance for members to mingle and look over both tankers. Thanks for the invite Brett, Cheers Jason

15.01.2022 This is teamwork at it's best, very clever coordination between the emergency services. Well done to the CFA team at District 13. Enjoy a little bit of early Christmas cheer.

07.01.2022 The CFA have attended several house fires related to wood fires over the past month, fortunately none were in our patch, these were attributed to; Blocked / uncleaned chimney Inappropriate maintenance on a chimney Bin fire against the house caused by hot ashes ... Below is a friendly reminder of wood fire safety Chimneys and flues should be cleaned annually. Empty ashes using a metal hand shovel in to a metal container, and wait until completely COLD to dispose of in your rubbish bin. Don’t put ashes straight into your compost bin or on the ground near the house. Open wood fires need a fire screen. Keep flammable items 1 metre from the heater. Don’t overload fireplaces and wood heaters. Extinguish open fires before leaving home or going to sleep. Be warm but safe this winter

A huge thanks to crews from FFMV, Bright, Porepunkah and Harrietville who were able to bring it under control quickly. FFMV had 2 bulldozers on scene and a helicopter was dispatched to monitor.... The fire is now contained and will be monitored tonight and tomorrow. I cannot stress enough the importance of having your burn registered, having water resources available and looking at weather forecasts before you light up. Have a great weekend, Cheers Jason.
