23.01.2022 The nutrition tool box... I have done my own tax online before, but I am not about to give you guys financial advice. Dietitians are trained to understand how and when to use various nutrition strategies- it's a science! One of the reasons nutrition can be so confusing is that each week there are dozens of media stories on new or existing nutrition strategies, supplements and diets that all seem fairly convincing. For the most part, many of these approaches have some good evi...dence for their use, in the right scenario. And here is the crux of this post. All of these nutrition strategies may be useful, even highly effective, but the most important question is- is it useful to you? Instead of asking does it work, try asking, is this the right tool for me? Each week I see people trying out different 'tools' from the nutrition tool box, with varying levels of success. Some people get lucky and find an approach that really works for them, but then their friend (who have completely different goals and circumstances) is struggling and feeling deflated because they are not getting the same result. Here's the thing, all of these nutrition strategies can work (most not all), the key is making the sure that you understand the benefits and limitations of the approach (because each one will have some or many) and assessing if it aligns with what you are trying to achieve and your lifestyle considerations. For example, fasting might be a highly useful strategy for a 45 year old male/female who doesn't care about food, only participates in light activity and sits at a desk all day, but applying this same strategy to a 30 year old road cyclist who trains twice a day also has a very active job and loves breakfast more than life, well maybe there are some other strategies that would be more appropriate for that persons goals. 13.01.2022 I have put on 10 or more kilos since I started training, but I am the same clothing size (not that it matters).To get from where you are now, to where you want to be requires a new plan. Left is after my annual City to Surf run, in first year of a human biology degree (I soon switched to a nutrition degree). What I was doing was fine- exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet. But to get from left to the picture on the right, I needed a different approach. If you are i...nto your training but wondering why you are not where you thought you would be, it’s usually one of two things (or both): a. Not following a structured plan. Some people just don’t know what if feels like to train with good intensity, and often are not hitting a high enough threshold to elicit a response from your body. It doesn’t needs to be heaps more, but it does need to be adequate. Put it this way, exercising more, and eating less is only going to compromise your health long term.
