24.01.2022 Dave’s Market Update This week, Dave says... ‘We have an abundance of fabulous tomatoes this week, especially truss, Tomberry tomatoes and yellow snacking tomatoes. The hot weather has led to lower prices especially in the cauliflower, zucchini and broccoli categories. Beans, beanettes, leeks and rhubarb are all easing as well. Mushrooms and rhubarb continues to be very good value and we are enjoying a decent price fall in corn. Berries and mangoes continue to b...e a little undersupplied. Quality cherries have had a little more rain than is ideal so it may be mid next week before supply returns to normal. Grapes, both red and white are still coming from Queensland. Normally I don’t get too excited about these early Queensland grapes however this year, they are quite a decent product and fairly priced. Australian Valencia oranges, most melons and bananas are all excellent quality and well supplied. The peaches and nectarines available this week are genuinely worth eating and will get better every week. With the hot weather this week, I don’t think you can go past the excellent quality, well priced seedless melon now in store. 24.01.2022 Daves Pick of the WeekThis week, Daves pick is... Premium Berries! Its very hard to go past the incredible berry offers this week. All berries except blackberries, are inexpensive and great quality. Raspberries are not as cheap as blues or strawberries but they are coming back in price. With blues and strawbs, I would really recommend you have a good look at our premium berry range. Try these for a really superior taste experience at a fairly modest extra cost. I ...am fairly sure you will find them to be a cut above the average supermarket line and worth the small extra cost. We cant easily go out to the local restaurants so I think we can spoil ourselves with the best available for our home consumption. Enjoy!!! - David Harris HOW TO PICK: Strawberries - The perfect strawberry should be fully coloured, firm, bright, plump and shiny. Size plays no part in determining the perfect strawb. Make sure the cap (calyx) is attached, green and fresh-looking. Blueberries - Pick firm, plump berries that have a natural, light blue-silver blush on the skin (this blush is a natural protective wax coating) and avoid excessively soft or withered berries. Raspberries - Look for brightly-coloured raspberries with plump, blemish-free skin. Ensure theres no moisture at the bottom of the punnet. Blackberries - Look for colour ranging from a deep purple to black. The blackberries should be moderately firm, plump, and have a uniform colour. Ensure the bottom of the punnet is also dry. HOW TO STORE: Always keep your berries in the fridge. The moisture content of berries is high, so always remove the fruit from punnets and place (unwashed) in a large container lined with absorbent paper. Only wash (or remove any tops) just before eating. Always eat at room temperature to get maximum flavour from your berries! See more

22.01.2022 Daves Market Update This week, Dave says... Little has changed this week in fruit. Again, there are lots of top quality and inexpensive berries which this week includes mulberries. Apples continue to be difficult but there are a few more top quality pink lady apples on offer as the west Australian fruit starting to arrive. Lots of bananas and prices are easing in this category. The papaya quality remains superb and prices are very reasonable. Rockmelons ar...e easing and most citrus is shortening up except for mandarins. Its time to try Northern Territory KP mangoes, theyre not too dear and are starting to ripen and eat well. The vegetable bargain of the week is celery. I think its as cheap as I have seen it for 4 or 5 years. Asparagus is now all Australian and the quality is excellent, far fresher than the imported product. Beetroot, both loose and in bunches, has come way back in price and top quality handpicked beans are very well priced. Zucchini both premium and Imperfect remain cheap as does broccoli, eggplant fennel and coriander. There are also bargains to be had in Shanghai bok choy and Imperfect tomatoes. - David Harris See more

22.01.2022 Daves Market Update This week, Dave says... Blood oranges from the Riverina region in south western NSW are really great eating this week. A relatively short season, blood oranges have that distinctive berry/citrus taste that make the fruit so unique and sought after. Limes are expensive so lemons are a good option and theres plenty of great value to be had in our Imperfect lemons. Imperfect lemons are showing the effect of a windy growing season but are perf...ectly juicy. The headline act in fruit this week is undoubtedly Queensland strawberries. A week of excellent growing conditions see the strawberry numbers on the move and the quality is amazing. Blueberry volumes are gaining momentum. Once again, good growing conditions means the fruit is just the way we like it firm, crunchy and sweet. Plenty of good things happening in the markets this week with broccoli, baby broccoli, silver beet, celery, cabbages, Chinese cabbage, imperfect tomatoes all in good supply. Tomatoes (in particular our Imperfects) from Bowen in North Queensland are excellent this week and a fantastic alternative to truss tomatoes which are both short in supply and expensive. Cauliflowers from QLD, VIC and NSW are also outstanding in quality and value this week. There are strong numbers in the markets with all growing regions producing good volumes. Perhaps the best news is that the Australian asparagus season is about to start in the next few weeks. With the challenges facing exporters, I suspect it will be a good season for consumers. - David Harris See more

20.01.2022 Daves Market Update This week, Dave says... The Spring raspberry crops have started. Prices have eased substantially to be quite reasonable and they will continue to come under pressure as the spring crops gain momentum. Our raspberries are mainly from Coffs Harbour in Northern NSW. Dry weather conditions the last fortnight in the growing areas means the blueberries are eating fantastic. Hard, crunchy and very sweet. For those who like to indulge, try our ...premium range of blues theyre worth every cent. Strawberries are still arriving into the markets in strong volumes. The fruit is fantastic eating and really inexpensive. Our premium range of strawberries are a cut above anything you will find in a supermarket and not expensive at allThere is some more papaya around the markets week. With conditions in far north Queensland starting to warm up, the papaya crops start to come out of hibernation. Papaya has been fairly expensive in recent weeks; however, prices have eased this week. Time to put papaya back on the shopping list. Kensington pride Mangoes from the Northern Territory are still dribbling into the markets with no large volumes expected for another month. The mangoes instore are mature fruit and good eating. The markets this week have a good variety of quality vegetables on offer. Some of the spring crops have started so we will see some excellent opportunities in leafy green vegetables over the coming weeks. This week, we have coriander on special in all stores at a great price. Celery, lettuce, broccoli, fennel, baby broccoli, brown onions and zucchini are all well supplied. This week, Imperfect zucchini represents excellent value. Their imperfection is that they are larger than normal but still perfectly good to eat. All our asparagus instore is now Australian. Cooler temperatures down south have held the Australian asparagus season back a little, but it looks ready to go with volumes of Australian asparagus on the increase. 19.01.2022 Daves Market Update This week, Dave says... The berry feast continues unabated. Raspberries have started to ease back at last but the main focus continues to be strawberries and blueberries. With strawberries, there is sadly less emphasis on taste and more on yield in the industry which of course, is the result of the supermarkets driving the price down so the farmers get to fund the advertised specials. If you would like to taste a really good strawberry this... week, try our 375gm or 400 gm packs which are the Petaluma variety. You wont find this fruit in the supermarkets and you will pay more for the fruit and I think that is entirely appropriate. We have a couple of very well priced Imperfect lines this week in our fruit category. Also this week, Honey Murcott mandarins and Pink Lady apples are outstanding value and really good eating fruit. The other great news is that the first of the Northern Territory KP mangoes are starting to arrive in the markets. By this weekend, we will have fruit in store ready to eat and not all that dear. We have some excellent winter vegetables to choose from this week. First choice is definitely Brussels Sprouts, its still the winter crop and the weather is perfect for them. Broccoli is very well priced and at its best. Imperfect zucchini is cheap again, as is celery. Snow pea quality is excellent and well-priced. We have a new variety of pumpkin in store, its called Orange glow. A fantastic product, sweeter than Jap. You eat it all, dont peel off the skin. For value, you cant go past our Imperfect tomatoes, very very good quality, better than the premiums often are. Thats the nature of our product. David Harris See more

17.01.2022 Daves Pick of the WeekThis week, Daves pick is... Celery! Celery is at its best in the Spring. This week we have a glut in the market and the price of this truly healthy and ancient vegetable is about as cheap as we ever see it these days. It is an extremely versatile food and great for soup, juice, in salads or snacking on. A real bargain this week at Harris Farm. - David Harris HOW TO PICK:... If youre buying a whole celery bunch, look for bright green leaves with no brown spots or yellowing. Brown or yellow on the leaves indicates that the celery is a bit older. The stalks should be green and crisp. If the stalks are starting to shrivel at the top, turn yellow or brown, or feel soft, pass on that bunch and look for a different one. When youre buying pre-cut celery stalks (who doesnt like a ready-to-grab snack sometimes?) look for bright green stalks that feel crisp. Pay particular attention to the ends of the stalks. The cut ends might look a little dry, and thats fine. If the ends look yellow or brown, shriveled, or soft, choose a different bag. HOW TO STORE: Store bunches of celery in the high humidity produce drawer in your refrigerator. Keep the celery away from any cold spots in your refrigerator, as it freezes easily. (Frozen celery gets soft and mushy when it thaws.) You can store celery in its original packaging for 1-2 weeks. If the stalks of celery are already cut, there is a better method for storage. Once cut, the stalks will lose moisture at a faster rate, so they are best stored in the refrigerator in a glass jar or Tupperware, submerged in water. This keeps the stalks hydrated and crisp. These wonderful fresh herbs are at their best when the weather is mild. Not too hot and not too cold, our current weather is perfect for these lines. The only thing that can spoil them is heavy rain which is not likely in the near future. Also known as cilantro or Chinese parsley, every bit of this herb from th...e fresh leaves to the roots are used in cooking. Our many Asian, Mexican and Indian dishes include coriander; our family loves it with soft white fish, and other sites will list numerous health benefits of including coriander in your recipes. This herb loves the mild weather we have been having and so we are selling this herb at a very special price in our stores this week! David Harris HOW TO PICK Choose coriander with bright-green leaves and stems. Avoid coriander that has yellow or wilted leaves or leaves that have black spots or other visible damage. Coriander should smell sweet and fresh. HOW TO STORE Coriander should be kept in the fridge, where it can last for up to a week. You can either wrap the bunch in a dampened paper towel or chux, or place it in a glass or jar with water covering the roots only. See more

16.01.2022 Daves Market Update This week, Dave says... Plenty of good eating papaya from Far North Queensland in the markets this week. We are currently on the tail end of our winter banana crops. This usually means an increase in the volumes of small fruit. Whilst not the most attractive bananas youre likely to see, the flavour is awesome; its all to do with the amount of time the fruit hangs on tree. There are still plenty of good quality strawberries on offer thi...s week, however I think raspberries and blueberries are the picks in the berry category this week. New season mulberries are also instore this week. Blood orange juice is on special in all stores, a fantastic product at a great price. This years shortened blood orange season is winding up and this will be the last opportunity to try this amazing juice. Plenty of good things happening in the markets this week on the vegetable front. Cauliflower, broccoli, tender stem broccoli, zucchini, celery, beans, cucumbers, fennel and Chinese cabbage are all in good supply. Leafy vegetables from the Sydney basin are fantastic in quality and Imperfect tomatoes are still excellent this week. Silver beet, Asian greens and kale are also standouts this week. The Australian asparagus season is gaining momentum. The season has been held back by some cooler weather down south, however as things warm up, so to do the quantities of asparagus. 10.01.2022 Dave’s Pick of the Week This week, Dave’s pick is... Beanettes! My product of the week is beanettes. At the moment, we only sell these in a tray, and they are by far the best bean we sell. At this time of the year, the very best beanettes in store are grown for us by the Mitchison family from the Manning river near Taree. Beanette is a made-up name now used to describe any baby beans which are of the smaller varieties of green beans. So, it comes down to the indiv...idual grower as to what beanettes you actually get. The bean our grower has was originally imported from the USA but bred in Holland and is such an extraordinary product that when they are available, they are the only bean I take home. They are not cheap but a four-dollar packet will feed three or possibly four people so at a dollar a head per serve, these are great value and a great product. There is only one grower of this product and that farmer currently has stock. However, some weeks we will run out, particularly on the weekend but we won’t substitute these for a lesser product whilst they are in season and available. David Harris HOW TO PICK Pick the beans with a vibrant bright green colour, avoid darker looking beans and beans with blemishes or large swollen pods. Fresh beans of good quality should be slim and crisp, and should snap when broken. HOW TO STORE Store unwashed, in a plastic bag in the fridge or crisper, and use within 4 days. See more

It is a very old-fashioned vegetable that has done a marvellous job of reinventing itself. In my childhood, bitter tasting Brussels were something most kids despised. Now with smaller sweeter strains, this product has become very popular. Now prepared in combination with salmon, bacon and a myriad of other options - there would hardly be a trendy restaurant i...n Sydney that does not have them at some stage on their winter menu! 08.01.2022 Dave’s Pick of the Week This week, Dave’s pick is... Blackberries! My pick this week is blackberries. Just a few years ago we only had the traditional wild varieties and the season was 4 or 5 short weeks late January to early March. Forward to today and we have fabulous sweet ,juicy plump varieties nearly twelve months of the year and blackberries are now around twenty five percent of our berry category. Many of the commercial farms now have thornless varieties which... makes the harvest far less problematic. They become more popular every year and sales will soon equal strawberry sales! They are really plentiful this week, so make sure to look for a bargain in your local HFM store. David Harris HOW TO PICK: Look for plump, firm, fully black berries. HOW TO STORE: To store blackberries, put them in a shallow container and place them in a cool spot or in the refrigerator as soon as you can after picking. Fresh blackberries are very perishable and should be eaten or frozen with two or three days of picking. Blackberries freeze well, and frozen berries can be used for making ice creams, sherbets, pies or dessert sauces. To freeze them, just arrange them in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Put the cookie sheet in the freezer for an hour or two, then pour the frozen berries into a large container. Frozen, they'll keep for as long as 10 months. See more

07.01.2022 Daves Market Update This week, Dave says... Berries and particularly premium berries, are very inexpensive and excellent eating at the minute. This is the week for berries. Blood oranges are still very good value and all citrus is eating fantastically. I am really enjoying my morning blood orange juice, mixed now with ruby grapefruit. Granny Smith apples are plentiful in this difficult apple year. There are lots of very good vegetable options in store this ...week. Perhaps the most dramatic is the drastic reduction in the red capsicum price, actually below half last weeks price. We have a fantastic brushed potato special this week in all stores. Broccoli remains cheap and good as does celery, imperfect zucchini and iceberg lettuce. Cabbage and Chinese cabbage, spinach and English spinach and top-quality handpicked beans have also all eased in price. Soon, the spring flush of vegetables will commence, and food bills will fall - good news!" - David Harris See more

07.01.2022 Dave’s Market Update This week, Dave says... We are now in full swing with Valencia oranges, which are picked fresh and sent to market. Any navels you may come across now will be stored fruit, they may be good or they may not. The Valencia’s of course have lots of seeds, that’s just how they are. Topless pineapples and bananas continue to be very well supplied and inexpensive. Stonefruit is interesting; heavy rains ruined many of the early cherries, however I h...ave seen some very good 2kg boxes in our stores this week. Apricots are the best I have seen for this early in the season. Peaches and nectarines are being heavily promoted by the chain stores but in my view are not quite there yet, look to next week for bigger sweeter fruit. Our grapes are now all Australian however some other retailers still have imported fruit which like me are getting a bit long in the tooth. The apple season is virtually over, a few good pink Ladies still around but its time now to think about grapes, mangoes... Again there is a multitude of fabulous vegetables available this week. All tomatoes are fabulous quality and inexpensive. My pick of the tomatoes this week are the cherry truss; superb flavour and half last week’s price. Mushrooms, Dutch carrots, Rhubarb and zucchini are all still inexpensive again. Baby broccoli, cauliflowers and broccoli are all great bargains this week. 02.01.2022 Daves Pick of the Week This week, Daves pick is... Imperfect Ruby Red Grapefruit! After March each year, good grapefruit is always hard to find. Then the new season fruit arrives from Queensland and things improve, but they are still dear. This week, we have a really good eating line of fruit from Queensland that we are selling as part our Imperfect offer. Its only problem is the fruit is a bit larger than the market desires. I love to mix half a grapefruit with... navels or bloods for a great juice in the morning. - David Harris HOW TO PICK: Look for grapefruits that feel plump with fairly smooth and thin skin. it should also feel heavy for its size. 01.01.2022 Daves Pick of the Week This week, Daves pick is... Strawberries Strawberries are now recovered from the recent heavy rains and we have some fantastic fruit on offer this week. There is downward pressure on prices being exerted by the fantastic blueberry offer this week. Providing there is no more big rains, both berries will be fantastic quality and very well priced. I think early August is the best time of the year for berries. - David Harris HOW TO PICK:... The perfect strawberry should be fully coloured, firm, bright, plump and shiny. Size plays no part in determining the perfect strawberry. In fact, small strawberries are equally as sweet and juicy as large ones. Make sure the cap (calyx) is attached, green and fresh-looking. HOW TO STORE: The moisture content of strawberries is high, so always remove fruit from punnets and place (unwashed) in a large container lined with absorbent paper. Strawberries are best stored at 4C, either uncovered or loosely covered. Serve at room temperature. Only remove their caps after washing and just prior to use. See more

01.01.2022 Daves Market Update This week, Dave says... In winter with no local stone fruit, berries and citrus continue to be the focus for HFM. Raspberries are in short supply but there are enough blueberries and strawberries. However, big wet weather events are interrupting supplies here and of course, harming the quality. The citrus is good, and we have a well-priced line of imperfect ruby grapefruit in our stores this week. In mandarins, Imperials are now finished.... There are now quite a few alternative mandarins available, I think overall the Honey Murcotts are the best option. The blood oranges are also now approaching their best. If you are a fan of imported fruit, the Washington state cherries over the next four or five days are fantastic. A few days into August they are never quite as good. All our grapes are now imported, they will get better as the season progresses. Apples are still hard going; it will be 2021 before that changes. Not a lot of changes in vegetables this week. Plenty of broccolini, celery, Brussel sprouts and Dutch carrots with prices very similar or slightly cheaper than last week. Cabbage and spinach are both cheaper than they have been. Onions, potatoes and zucchini also remain good value. By and large, a very similar market to last week. - David Harris See more
