19.01.2022 Can you 3D print with timber? The answer is yes as new technology developed at the University of Sydney combines timber waste products and recycled plastic to create a high-performance construction material. With two story buildings already being 3D printed in concrete this new timber-based product could provide a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option. https://www.timberbiz.com.au/3d-printing-combines-timber-w/

12.01.2022 Looking for firewood? We produce three different types of firewood; split wood, round backs and mill ends. These are produced as recovery products from wastage at our sawmill. Split wood is regular firewood made by splitting sections of logs. In our case we use the rounds that are cut from the ends of the log during milling. Round backs are the outside of the logs that are cut off during the milling process. These are generally thinner and wider then split wood with one flat... side and they often still have bark attached. Mill ends are pieces that are cut off boards at the mill, these tend to be smaller pieces and are available by request. We collect our firewood over the year as it is is produced by the mill. It is left outside to air dry over summer, so that come winter it is dry and ready to burn. Firewood is available every day during winter, but limited quantities are available so we recommend you order ahead. We sell by the bin load, which fills a 6x4 trailer. Firewood can be picked up from our yard on Wright Street. We can also deliver truck loads of firewood, but it must be ordered and is subject to availability. We sometimes have kindling available. This is made up of off cuts from small sections of timber and is only available when we are producing those products. Pic 1 is a bin load of split wood, Pic 2 is split wood and Pic 3 is round backs.

12.01.2022 WE ARE OPEN. However, access off Fairlawn Road is closed - please use our gate on Wright Street and report to the office. We need to keep our employees safe and healthy so for now we are only allowing access to the main office. Thank you for understanding.

11.01.2022 The Murtoa Stick Shed is an impressive Australian structure. It was built in 1941 to store wheat and used 560 mountain ash poles (56 rows of 10). The shed is approximately 900ft long, 200ft wide and about 60ft and has a massive four acre concrete floor that was hand poured around the poles after they were installed. Although other similar sheds were built in Australia during the war years the Murtoa shed was the first built and the only one still standing, making it unique in the world. http://murtoastickshed.com.au/

10.01.2022 A large cache of over 20 swamp kauri logs has been uncovered on a construction site in New Zealand. Swamp kauri is the worlds most expensive timber, worth up to NZ$10,000! Swamp kauri is made when trees fall into wet, swampy ground that seals the tree, preventing rot. This timber is preserved for around 800 - 50,000 years, meaning some timber pre-dates that last iceage! https://www.timberbiz.com.au/swamp-kauri-find-at-auckland-/

10.01.2022 Have you ever wondered about the role of women in the forest industry? "Lumberjills: Britians Forgotten Army" by Joanna Foat explores the wartime careers of Britians Lumberjills. When both lumber and labour were in short supply the British government allowed women to work in the timber industry. An estimated 15,000 women worked for the Womens Timber Corps at its peak. They did everything from fell and crosscut trees by hand to operating sawmills and forestry sites. https://www.timberbiz.com.au/meet-the-lumberjills-of-ww2/

08.01.2022 School students will soon be able to take virtual excursions into the Australian renewable forest industry thanks to a new project by ForestLearning. The virtual tours were filmed using 360 technology to make it as immersive as possible. They follow the full renewable forest cycle from seedling to tree to wood product and back to planting new seedlings to replace harvested trees. Thanks to this virtual technology students can witness aspects of the forest industry that would otherwise be inaccessible due to safety precautions. The tours will be launched in July on the ForestLearning website (www.forestlearning.edu.au) as well as other video sharing platforms, including YouTube360 and Vimeo. https://www.timberbiz.com.au/virtual-forest-to-teach-stude/
