24.01.2022 Uncle Richard Kennedy, proud Wotjobaluk Elder and Traditional Owner conducted a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country in Wergaia language at the launch of Matt Scullion’s song 1868. It was a fantastic evening a great celebration, not only of the song release but of the people of Harrow getting together for the first time since March.

22.01.2022 A familiar face to Harrowvians!

20.01.2022 Third generation Harrowvian and West Wimmera Shire Senior Citizen of the year, Lachie Turner, often tells the story of his grandfather racing Unaaramin-Johnny Mullagh in a foot race at a sports meeting on the Johnny Mullagh Oval back in 1881. Found this article from the Hamilton Spectator which pretty much tells it how Lachie does. Lachie pictured here with Aaron Mc Grath who played Johnny Mullagh in the play Black Cockatoo, and yep, he told Aaron the story and he thought it was an amazing historical connection.

20.01.2022 The Indigenous kit our Australian Men's Cricket Team will wear during the Dettol T20 series against India! Thoughts?!

18.01.2022 Living History......our town.

18.01.2022 The Rev J Kirkland conducted the burial service at Unaaramin - Johnny Mullagh’s graveside on Sunday August 15 1891. He spoke of Mullagh’s great career as a cricketer and of him being a noble type of an almost extinct race. The Reverend went on to say that a fitting monument be raised above him to mark the spot of his burial to future generations. As a result, a public meeting was held and a committee of management was formed appointing gentlemen from the broader region to act as collectors of subscriptions to fund the monument. It still stands today at the edge of Johnny Mullagh Oval having endured vandalism attacks and even a thwarted kidnapping. A fitting monument to a great man, revered in his lifetime and at his passing. Maybe the first monument erected to an Aboriginal person in Australia??

17.01.2022 Friday Pie day Chicken and Leek Beef Provençal

16.01.2022 Vale Rex Harcourt. It is with much sadness that we learn of the passing of Rex Harcourt at the age of 96. Rex was a long time friend of the Harrow Discovery Centre, instrumental in the establishment of the HDC in 2002 and co-author of the book Cricket Walkabout, a primary source of reference when telling the story of the First XI of 1868. A scholar and intellect, pictured here in 2018, always up for a cup of tea and a chat about his favourite topic. He also wrote Southern Invasion Northern Conquest- story of the founding of Melbourne. Rest in peace Rex, you will be sadly missed by your friends in Harrow.

15.01.2022 Congratulations Mayor Bruce Meyers, a well deserved honour.

13.01.2022 The First XI of 1868

13.01.2022 1868 is the story of the first Australian XI cricket team to tour internationally. The year was 1868 and the team was an all indigenous side. It's a piece of Australian history that a lot of Aussies don't know about. It's a great honour for me to be able to share this unsung story.

13.01.2022 The Walkabout Wickets silk makes another appearance.

13.01.2022 Geoffrey Carracher (then Cr Carracher) hanging out with the rich and famous (and infamous) on the 1988 Aboriginal Cricket Tour of the UK. Geoffrey has been a esteemed member of the HDC committee since it opened in 2004 and has donated all memorabilia from that tour to our exhibition.

11.01.2022 It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Captain Doyne Tremayne Hunt RAN (rtd). Doyne was a respected and highly regarded member of the Harrow community before moving to Hamilton with his beloved wife Betsey. Doyne was also a member of the founding committee of the Harrow Discovery Centre and subsequent president of the committee of management for many years. His vision and foresight, fastidious attention to detail and record keeping has put the HDC in fine stead for many years to come. Laid to rest in Harrow overlooking his beloved Kout Nourien, he will be sadly missed. With our best wishes to Betsey and her family. Vale Captain Doyne Hunt.

11.01.2022 Great work Cricket Australia! Courtney Hagen

A founding member of the HDC and enthusiastic historian, David brought so much knowledge and insight to the storytelling of Johnny Mullagh and the First XI, thankfully we have it recorded. We will continue to tell this story in your honour, with love and best wishes to the Edgar family from the Comm...ittee of Management of the Harrow Discovery Centre. With Lou Lou now, no doubt getting up to more mischief. Vale David Edgar. See more

05.01.2022 April 21. The day we were to host the Ensemble Theatre production of Black Cockatoo and Cricket Australia for their inaugural Pilgrimage to Harrow. Oh well, we will just have to do it another time, but will take this opportunity to thank those who nearly made it happen. Loretta Busby, Executive Producer at Ensemble Theatre. From that first phone call in August in 2017 to now, have had a few laughs, thank you for enabling this to (nearly) happen. Adam Cassidy and Courtney Ha...gen, Cricket Australia, this would not have (nearly) happened with out your support, thank you for everything. Last, but certainly not least, OUR COMMUNITY. Your encouragement, enthusiasm, generosity and support, you know who you all are, thank you. So many messages of regret, but we will see you back in Harrow when this is all over as we are not going anywhere, we will be here telling this amazing story of resilience and courage. Here a few photos of the Black Cockatoo journey. Stay safe and keep well. See more
