25.01.2022 MEET ANOTHER PUBLIC FACE OF HARS. Originally from southern Sydney, including The Shire, Tour Guide Ron Murrell escaped to lovely Kiama a bit further down the coast from HARS at Albion Park 17 years ago. An aircraft enthusiast since his childhood, Ron earned his PPL - Private Pilot Licence - in the 70's during his working life in a few industries and finally in financial services. He's a familiar weekend face at HARS and enjoys meeting and chatting with our many visitors. Join us soon at HARS and meet our wonderful and always welcoming members -- all of them volunteers too!

24.01.2022 TRACKER PARTY TRICK AT HARS TARMAC WEEKEND

24.01.2022 MIKE MEETS "851" Former RAN aircraft engineer Mike Doyle visited HARS today to catch up with our Grummen Tracker 851. This aircraft was regularly serviced and maintained by Mike in his RAN career in the early 1970's. Mike is now retired to the Taree area and rode his motorbike down with friends to visit us.... Come and visit us yourself this Tarmac Weekend, we are only 1 hr south of Sydney. We are a terrific place to bring the family. We are planning to fly our AP-3C Orion tomorrow on Saturday at about 1300 with engine runs on our airworthy Neptunes hopefully in the morning.

24.01.2022 BOB BLACK MASTER ENGINEER Engineer Bob Black and ex-Quarantine dog Yoomee are an almost-daily feature around HARS, here next to his proudest achievement -- the dramatically-soaring former RAAF Roulettes Macchi MB-326H outside our museum entrance raised up in 2016. Now 80, born in Kensington NSW, Bob joined RAAF at 17 as armourer & fitter at Richmond, Rathmines & Williamtown specialising in the Lockheed P2V-7 Neptune, so perfect expert to keep our three working at HARS. Later ...Sabres & Vampires before a mixed career as engineer, machinist & fitter, even learning to fly. Joined HARS in 2007 shunting work back & forth to his Sydney engineering works before retiring to Albion Park in 2012 and invited into Robert Greinert's engineering operation. "I've made parts for virtually every aircraft in the place," Bob modestly boasts, with the new struts for the Fokker F.VIIb/3m Southern Cross replica a notable challenge, but the Macchi his soaring best. On the personal side, after a long illness, Bob sadly lost his wife of 55-years Sandra one year ago, and struggled hard through the aftermath, returning to HARS in January. He brings much cheer around HARS with his now-constant companion, Yoomee , a retired Quarantine Dog who loves smelling food, Here's wishing Bob all the best for next week's Knee Replacement and back on deck soon. 23.01.2022 HARS DAKOTA A65-94 IN THE TWILIGHT After her post 100hr inspection test flight our Dakota A65-94 stands on the tarmac looking factory fresh. Sure you'll agree not bad for a lady built in 1944.... Come and visit us at HARS, there's always something to see

23.01.2022 MORE OF THE NAVY HISTORIC FLIGHT Overshadowed by the AP-3C Orion's triumphant return to the air at Saturday's Tarmac Day, the RAN Historic Flight's Grumman S-2G Tracker 844 passed a milestone of its own to getting back in the air for the first time since its arrival at HARS nearly 12 months ago. It's been a tough slog. The old Vietnam Era bird fired up its powerful engines, dropping its wings and then a full-power aborted take-off before a gallant return alongside the Orion. Photo reportage from Carl Robinson.

23.01.2022 A VERY SPECIAL HARS TRIBUTE TO THE RAAF CENTENARY. The Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) at Albion Park NSW provided a unique contribution of six iconic military aircraft to the massive fly-past over Canberra, Australia's capital, to commemorate the 100 years since the formation of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) on 31 March 2021. The fly-past featured our C-47, Catalina, Caribou, Orion, Huey and here we provide an extra salute to the aircraft which began... HARS large & unique collection of still-operational aircraft, the Lockheed Neptune, and the inspiration behind the museum, President & Chief Pilot Bob De La Hunty. The HARS Aviation Museum is located at Shellharbour Airport 100 kms south of Sydney in the Southern Illawarra Region. 20.01.2022 SALUTING OUR YOUNGEST HARS MEMBER. Still only 17, Anakin Grima has been a familiar sight since signing up at HARS right after his week of Work Experience a couple years back and now passionately dreams of becoming a LAME (Licenced Aircraft Maintenance/Engineer) one day with Qantas -- and who's come to our attention with his meticulously-created 100th Anniversary poster illustrated below, a time-consuming project that involved all his creative computer skills. Living with a... birth defect known as VACTERL to his right arm, Anakin -- and yes, his dad is a huge Star Wars fan -- endured endless teasing growing up in Western Sydney's Prospect region but got more slack after moving to Kiama with his family, including a younger sister & brother, six years ago. But determined to make his own way after completing his Year 10 Leaving Certificate, Anakin has attended TAFE and hopeful of a starting job in Aviation, his passion. Anakin is training with RAA (Recreational Aircraft), and hopeful of solo status, is a cadet at Illawarra's nearby Fire Control Centre, and spends a couple days a week (usually Thursday & Saturday) at HARS, often under the mentorship of Jim Thurstan with fabric & other work. Our Czech-made L-200A Morava VH-EMV receives his regular attention. Anakin is also seriously into computer technology creating games, 3D modelling, flying aircraft simulators and all the nitty-gritty of creating products for social media. A great guy -- and let's wish Anakin all the best in his life & career. Reportage by Carl Robinson.

16.01.2022 WAR BIRDS FLY FOR TARMAC DAYS AT HARS AVIATION MUSEUM THIS WEEKEND HARS is only 1 hour south of Sydney at Shellharbour Airport, a great family day and a lot more amazing activity to see!!... (Fri 9 to Sun 11 Oct) It’s a sight and sound not to be missed with two legendary former RAAF military aircraft set to fly as HARS Aviation Museum holds its monthly Tarmac Days this weekend (Fri 9 to Sun 11 October). Both a recently retired Lockheed AP-3C Orion and a former C-47 Dakota will fly in the early afternoon of Saturday and Sunday from the museum located at Shellharbour Airport, just off the Princes Highway at Albion Park Rail. The Orion logged 16,400 hours with the RAAF from 1978 to 2016 and is maintained in flying condition as HARS is the only museum to have a flying example of a military-configured Orion while the type is still in active service. https://hars.org.au/lockheed-ap-3c-orion/ From three generations ago, the Dakota C-47 served with the RAAF from 1945 to 2000 and is one of four of its type at the museum. https://hars.org.au/douglas-dc3-aka-c-47-dakota-skytrain-g/ That so many of the almost 50 aircraft on display are kept operational is what makes HARS Aviation Museum so special and sets it apart from other museums which house only static displays. The October Tarmac Days also will feature: A Bell 47 M.A.S.H helicopter flying on Saturday and Sunday; Spectacular piston engine runs on the museum’s two operational Neptune anti-submarine patrol aircraft from the 1960s; Engine runs on a former RAN carrier-based Grumman S2 Tracker; https://hars.org.au/grumman-s-2g-tracker/ Up close restoration of a WW2 Beaufighter and the replica of Kingsford Smith’s Southern Cross. The third restored Jacobs piston motor is being readied for installation on the replica of Smithy’s famous Fokker Trimotor VH-USU. The 10-year project to bring this replica back to flying has been a labour of love for a small team at HARS Aviation Museum. Their effort is a work of art to be seen. Fokker Trimotors served as popular passenger aircraft in Europe during the 1920s and show how it was in those early days of flying. Tarmac Days, held on the second Friday of each month and onto the weekend, provide an opportunity to showcase some of the almost 50 aircraft on display for visitors at the all-volunteer HARS Aviation Museum. HARS Aviation Museum is open daily from 9.30 to 3.30. On Tarmac (and other) Days you can drop into Café Connie which offers a wide selection of hot and cold foods at very reasonable prices so you can make a meal of your visit. Michael Hough, AM (HARS NHF Project Leader) A Special NHF Report- An Update on HUEY... 998 RETURNING TO FLYING STATUS All the attached photos were taken by Michael Hough & are Copyright Free for NFP Usage. I am delighted to advise that the dedicated team of HARS volunteers had a very productive day last Sunday (11th October) when Iroquois UH1B 898 was flown for maintenance check flights at Nowra. The team was pleased with the flights. HARS expects to showcase the helicopter at the next Shellharbour Tarmac days in November. Please find attached some still shots and a brief AV clip of this extremely important milestone. On behalf of all of us I would like to thank and congratulate all the HARS volunteers who made this possible, and the sponsors who have supported us -especially Mr. Chris Sievers, CEO of Air Affairs. The good news is that we have commissioned Mountain Lion Productions to record the significant stages of 898’s restoration. We plan to produce an AV program of its restoration to flying, at this stage entitled Launch Huey 898.

13.01.2022 Filled, sanded and undercoated as our ex-RAN de Havilland FAW.53 Sea Venom, N4-895 awaits its long-anticipated paint job this past weekend at HARS. Part of our Navy Heritage Flight (NHF), the carrier-based Sea Venom replaced the Hawker Sea Fury and served on the HMAS Melbourne, including the Vietnam War. Our model arrived from UK and has a mixed history of ground running but never back to flying condition and once fully restored will be a static display aircraft. Lots of history here ! And great work, team ! Reportage by Carl Robinson .

06.01.2022 BILL IS A LEGEND Bill Lane is one of our earliest tour guides and a familiar face around HARS and regular presence on Tarmac Days, plus Wednesdays. "I'm a pure enthusiast," he explains. "I did model aircraft as a child and loved the details." He is certainly one of the most knowledgeable. After a long career with Australian Iron & Steel, later BHP, at Port Kembla starting as a fitter & turner, Bill retired in 1998 and indulged in travel and model trains.... As a resident of nearby Oak Flats, Bill often spotted HARS flying overhead, but a chance prize win in 2012 for a flight with Southern Biplanes next door and curiosity afterwards brought him here. "Bob de la Hunty was revving up the engines on a plane," Bill recalls. "We talked and I soon joined up as one of the original tour guides. Only four of us then with not many tourists." With an amazing memory for detail, Bill's favourites are the oldies like the DC-3's, but especially our Consolidated PBY-6A Catalina, its history and restoration. "I love their age and their history," he says. Married to Denise since 1966, they have one son and two grandchildren.
